The football or the rugby? England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel at Wembley, or England's opening World Cup match against the United States at Stade Félix-Bollaert? It's a no-brainer for Alex Curran. As large parts of the country prepare to reach a decision over the choice of viewing presented by this evening's clash of internationals, Steven Gerrard's wife knows where her attention will be directed.

"Steven is away with England," the distinguished WAG wrote this week in her newspaper shopping column, "so on Saturday I'm having a few of the girls round for an Ann Summers party. We'll have a few drinks and some food, and a good laugh, I'm sure."

Well, I suppose lying back and thinking of England takes many guises, but surely this is no time to be perusing novelty bedroom apparel in a relaxed, home setting. For heaven's sake, there's a war on - or, at any rate, a World
Cup, clashing inconveniently with the qualifying stages of a European Championship.
