Welcome to our wonderful world of Square Dancing! I'm going to change that to say "your", because we're proud to be 27 years young as your official Washington State Dance! We do have some time honored traditions, but we've also changed over the years; so rest assured, we're better than before and most definitely NOT the same old song and dance!
If you like our traditional dress of colorful dresses with full petticoats for ladies, and western cut shirts and boots for men, that's great; but if not, you are welcome to join us in comfortable clothing of your choice at all but a handful of "formal affairs". Petticoat Junction (Lynnwood, WA), a partner in progress, carries dancewear and accessories for all types of dancing, including a good selection of popular Prairie Skirts.
Are you thinking that you're NOT ready for a steady diet of old country music? Not to worry, because that has changed, too. Progressive record labels like Blue Star Records have been producing music of all genres for your dancing pleasure, including Pop Rock, Latin, Classic Rock and Roll, Jazz, Rap, Swing, Country Pop, Hip Hop, and Folk Rock to name a few. The common thread is a good 8 count beat, so let your imagination run wild!
I'm going to mention that under our umbrella of square dancing, you'll find low impact aerobic Square Dancing, aerobic Clogging (tap dancing); Contra Dancing; and ballroom style, Round Dancing that includes rhythms such as Waltz, Two Step, Cha Cha, Tango, Fox Trot, Slow Two Step (night club two step), West Coast Swing, Quick Step! In short, a little something for everyone!
You've seen our dance demonstrations at Seattle Center, area Shopping Centers, our State and County Fairs, and may be thinking that you couldn't possibly do all the fancy moves and twirls? That's highly unlikely because our dance instructors are well schooled in leading you step by step through our dance programs. As if that weren't enough, as a new dancer, you're also going to meet experienced dancers, fondly referred to as "Angels", whose sole purpose in life during your classes is to insure, you are successful and having FUN! Now how cool is that!?
I started to say, if you can walk, you can dance; but wheelchair friendly groups are proof positive that walking isn't even a prerequisite! I'll also mention the groups for our friends with learning and other disabilities. So what does it take to be successful? There can be exceptions, but I will tell you that most square dancers have a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA), and like people! If you fit that bill, come on down; and if NOT, you come anyway, because our SPIRIT is contagious!
