Excerpt from 'Of Aztecs and Conquistadors'

The Bay of Banderas, (El Bahia de Banderas) is the fifth largest bay in the world. This poem relates to one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen, as I sat on a soft white beach one evening, watching the sun slowly disappearing below the horizon, seemingly sinking into the calm blue waters of the mighty Pacific Ocean.

SUNSET IN THE BAY OF BANDERAS

(PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO)

Softly undulating Pacific rollers broke gently upon the shore,

Their sound a symphony of evening peace.

The beach of soft, white, sun-kissed sand, deserted, save for me..

In the evening sky, cormorants wheeled and whirled in their last display of the day,

Soon to disappear to their night-time’s rest.

In the distance, lush green hills appeared to run down to the sea,

Iguanas, sated from their daytime basking, scurried off in search of night-time refuge.

Across the bay, the fishermen hove to,

And a tranquil peace transcended all around.

Far above, though seeming close, the Sun fell lower and lower,

It seemed to rush to met the ocean, and I sat and watched, transfixed.

Like a giant fiery orange ball descending from the heavens,

Faster and faster it seemed to move, inexorably sinking,

Shadows lengthened and the waters of the bay turned from sun-kissed blue to twilight pewter.

For a few moments, it’s iridescence seemed to fill the sky,

Blotting out the whole horizon,

Then ever faster, the mighty Sun sank into the far away waves.

‘Twas a sunset like no other, that I had ever seen, I sat, in wondrous awe,

And marvelled at this sight of grand magnificence.

Here, I was closer to nature’s plan than I had ever been,

I sat a little longer, contemplating the sight I’d seen,

And as the evening drew closer to the coming night,

The air still warm, just a hint of sea breeze.

I was content...

Aztec Poems

I have no joy, I have no gladness,

The earth does not fill me.

I have suffered sorrows in the world.

The earth has only been lent to us,

Tomorrow, or the day after

The giver of life will beckon us to his home.

 -------------------------------------------------

Is it true that we have come to live upon the earth?

Are we to live on earth forever?

Only a fleeting moment here!

Even the precious stones crumble,

Even gold cracks and breaks.

Even the shining feathers are torn.

Are we to live on earth forever?

Only a fleeting moment here!

 --------------------------------------------------

Have you grown weary of your servants?

Are you angry with your servants?

O Giver of life?
