Gospel Sharing Tools

I usually avoid using the word "evangelism" because, for most people, it sounds like proselytizing in the streets. I prefer "Gospel sharing," giving the impression that the Gospel is something good that it should be shared. But like good food, it should be shared only in moderation and only with people who would want to partake of it. Otherwise, it would be vomited out, which is a waste. This is the reason why I hold a Bible study only when someone requests for it.

If you're planning to start a Bible Study, expect attendees to have a low level of Biblical knowledge. Perhaps even zero knowledge. Most of the people you'd find in churches in China are the elderly, are women and are poor. Well, at least a few members of the younger generation are curious enough to know what the Bible is all about -- that's why they're taking some time off from their schoolbooks to learn about the Good Book. You just have to satisfy their curiosity in a well and organized manner. Make the Bible study worth their while. I suggest that you begin with the following articles below (click on the article name or scroll down to read the article):

  1. What is the Bible? The Bible is the holy book of the Jewish and Christian faiths. Its name was taken from the Greek word Biblios, which means "Book of books" because it is a book made up of many books.

  2. How many books are in the Bible? There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament -- for a total of 66 books. The OT books were written in B.C. (Before Christ), and the NT books were written in A.D. (Anno Domini, "Year of the Lord").

  3. What does "testament" mean? Testament means "contract" or "promise." You'd get to read a lot about God making a contract (ie., His laws) and if man abides by it, God promises to bless man. If man breaches the contract, God promises to do something else that's far from being a blessing. Some DOs and DON'Ts in the Old Testament are not the same as in the New Testament.

  4. Who wrote the Bible? The books of the Bible were written by over 40 different people from all walks of life: shepherds, farmers, physicians, fishermen, priests, philosophers and kings.

  5. When was the Bible written? It was written over a period of some 1,500 years, from 1450 B.C. (the time of Moses) to about 100 A.D. (following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ).

  6. What languages was the Bible originally written in? The Bible was originally written in three languages: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.

  7. How many languages has the Bible been translated into? The Bible has been translated into at least 2,018 languages. The Bible was translated into English in 1382 by the English writer and preacher John Wycliffe. The works of William Shakespeare, considered by many to be the master writer of the English language, have been translated into only about 50 languages.

  8. When was the Bible printed? The Bible was printed in 1454 by Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the movable type model of the printing press. It was the first book ever printed.

  9. Is the Bible still the best-selling book in the world? Yes, indeed! Currently, 53 million Bibles are distributed annually. Since 1815, 2.5 billion copies have been distributed. In second place is Mao Zedong's Little Red Book with a stagnant 900 million copies published.

  10. What exactly is in the Bible? Read on to the next article...

Book ´Reviews´ with man looking in a large book

 What's Inside the Bible?

If a person were to sit down and seriously browse through the pages of the Bible, he will discover that it is far from being a boring book. The Bible is anything but boring, and the reader will surely find in it something palatable to his reading pleasure.

First of all, the Bible is a BOOK OF LAWS.
A sample is God's 10 Commandments as given through Moses (Exodus 20:3-17):
    1. You shall have no other gods before me.
    2. You shall not make for yourself an idol. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.
    3. You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
    4. Six days you shall labor, but the seventh day is a Sabbath. On it you shall not do any work.
    5. Honor your father and mother.
    6. You shall not murder.
    7. You shall not commit adultery.
    8. You shall not steal.
    9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
    10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, your neighbor's wife or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy are other books of the Bible that contain laws concerning food, clothing, etc.

Second, the Bible is a BOOK OF PRAYERS.
A sample is "The Lord's Prayer" by Jesus (Matthew 6:9-13):

"'Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your name,
  your kingdom come,
  your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
  Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.'"

Most of the books of the Bible are interspersed with prayers.

Third, the Bible is a BOOK OF POETRY.
A sample is "A Time for Everything" by King Solomon (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8):

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

The book of Psalms is of praise in the form of poetry; Proverbs is wisdom in the form of poetry; Song of Songs is poetry for one's beloved.

Fourth, the Bible is a BOOK OF INTERESTING STORIES.
Adam and Eve, Noah's ark, the Exodus, Samson and Delilah, David and Goliath, the first Christmas, the passion of the Christ -- all of these stories are classical and have inspired many religious and non-religious authors and filmmakers. If you have seen a movie based on a Bible story, shouldn't you read the original for the sake of truth and knowledge? Don't think that the Bible is filled only with stories about saintly people (for even the Bible doesn't omit the errors that they did). The Bible also contains stories about murder, rape (sodomy, incest, etc.) and even cannibalism. Interesting enough for you?

Fifth, the Bible is a BOOK OF HISTORICAL AND SCIENTIFIC FACTS.
Stem cloning technologists have founds that a certain clay can transform into human tissue (i.e., God's creating Adam out of clay); explorers have spotted a wooden shiplike structure on Mount Ararat (Noah's ark); geophysicists have proven that the Red Sea can divide (the Hebrews' crossing the Red Sea) -- these and other discoveries have shown credibility to the fantastic stories in the Bible. (For a deeper discussion on scientific facts mentioned in the Bible, check out the article "Making Faith and Science Meet in the Bible" at the bottom of this page.)

Sixth, the Bible is a BOOK OF PROPHECY.
Just as scientists believe that the earth will eventually die, the last book of the Bible (Revelation) also predicts the end of the world. Just a few of the Biblical prophecies that have come true: Babylon's being conquered by Persia, which was to be conquered by Greece, which was to be conquered by Rome (Daniel 2:31-40); the Inquisition (John 16:1-3); Abraham's descendents, the Jews and Muslims, to occupy Canaan, which is modern Israel/Palestine (Genesis 12); and Mohammedan terrorism (Genesis 16:11-12).

Seventh, the Bible is a BOOK FOR PRACTICAL LIVING.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." Micah 6:8 says, "And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and walk humbly with your God." If the Bible can make you a better person having a better life, why not read it? If you read it, why not believe it? If you believe it, why not live it?

Making Faith and Science Meet in the Bible

Some people don't want to read the Bible simply because they say that it's "unscientific." Take for example its first book Genesis, which is about the creation of the universe by God: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." (Genesis 1:1-2)

Bible believers can respectfully give doubters the following answers:

  • God, as a concept, is supposed to be SPIRITUAL -- not as physical as humans. That's what makes Him GOD. Science answers questions about the physical, but not the spiritual. Therefore, science is limited in answering all of man's questions. Questions such as "What is the right thing to do?" or "Do I have a soul?" enter the realm of spirituality, not science.

  • Scientific genius Albert Einstein quipped, "Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind." When he said that scientists who have no religion are lame, he meant that they have no direction in life. You see, Einstein believed that science would be a wonderful thing "if one does not have to earn one's living at it." Unfortunately, all people (including scientists) are caught in the vicious cycle of WORK to EAT, EAT to LIVE, LIVE to WORK, going nowhere in their mundane lives (which is like being lame). So why waste your time using your scientific knowledge to make life better for humanity, when people are nothing more than soulless animals, whether they live in a scientifically advanced country or a scientifically retrogressed country? If every man's very last stop is the grave, then there is no accounting for and no differentiating between the deeds of heroes (who should go to heaven) and villains (to hell). In this world, even heroes get forgotten and villains are very well remembered.

  • Einstein also said, "The highest principles for our aspirations and judgements are given to us in the Jewish-Christian religious tradition. It is a very high goal which, with our weak powers, we can reach only very inadequately, but which gives a sure foundation to our aspirations and valuations." This meant that Einstein believed that humanity can find the meaning of life in the Judeo-Christian scriptures, the Bible.

  • The Bible is not meant to be a purely scientific book -- just as there are other nonscientific books in the world that are still worth reading. You may read the Bible for intellectual purposes or simply for pleasure; it's up to you if you want to believe what it says.

  • Faith (through the Bible) tells us that God made the universe; science (through scientists) explains to us how it was made. View it this way: Let's say your mother cooks great spaghetti. Some people would taste it and comment how delicious it is. Other people would do more than that -- they'd ask your mother how she cooked the spaghetti (e.g., the ingredients, the temperature, the steps, etc.). Similarly, people who praise God for creating the universe are like the people who praise your mother for her cooking; people who inquire about the birth of the universe are like those who are curious about the cooking process. The fact is somebody did the cooking; those ingredients couldn't have come together by themselves.

  • The discussion about the existence of everything ends up with God, whether you're a theist or an atheist. For instance: Where did this piece of paper come from? From the store. Where did the store get it from? From the factory that makes paper out of trees. Where did the factory get the trees from? From the forest. Where did the forest come from? From their ancestor trees. Where did the first tree come from? From the first protozoa. Where did that protozoa come from? From the earth. Where did the earth come from? From the Big Bang. Where did the Big Bang come from? Could nothing explode? In the English alphabet, before you could get to Z, you first have to get past Y; before you get to Y, you first have to get past X; and so on, returning to A, the first letter. The question is, "Where did A come from?" Now this is a mystery, and isn't God a mystery? One might as well say that the source of the Big Bang is God.

  • Does it hurt to have faith? The French mathematician Blaise Pascal wrote, "Would you lose anything if you were to believe in God? If you believe in Him, and He does not exist, you lose nothing. But if you believe in Him, and He does exist, you gain everything. So do not gamble on God's existence."

  • There are scientific laws and theories that are compatible with the Genesis account of creation.

The Bible Says... Scholars Say...

In GENESIS

DAY 1:
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning -- the first day. [1:3-5]

[Psalm 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8 say that a thousand years -- meaning a long period of time -- is just a day to God.]

"LET THERE BE LIGHT!"
=
THE BIG BANG?

The "light" may refer to the Big Bang, an event theorized by some scientists, explaining the formation of the planets, moons, the sun and other stars.

AND/OR

The sun was being born. Astronomers theorize that it takes 5 billion years for a baby star to mature into a red giant (which is what the earth's sun is now).

DAY 2: And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And so it was so. God called the expanse "sky." [1:6-8]

Chemists tell us that the ocean and the atmosphere share the same element, oxygen: (liquid) water is H20 while the atmosphere (which contains water vapor) is 03.

DAY 3: And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters He called "seas." And God saw that it was good. [1:9-10]

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seeds in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. [1:11-12]

Some geologists have theorized about Pangaea -- that all the landmasses of ancient earth used to be one. Later, this supercontinent was divided into the seven continents of the modern world: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

Biologists believe that plants pre-dated animals -- that before any kind of animal roamed prehistoric earth, plants had to exist first. This is only logical because animals need plants for food.

DAY 4:  And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. [1:14-18]

By this time, the baby star which was born during "Day 1" has matured to a red giant -- the sun. The other stars are also maturing and brightening suns of other solar systems in the universe. As for the "lesser light," modern astronomers admit that the moon's origin is still a mystery. Some astronomers theorize that the moon may have once been an independent planet that went too close to the earth and has remained there because of the gravity of our planet. The moon reflects the light of the sun, giving a faint light during nighttime.

DAY 5: And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds in crease on the earth.” [1:20-22]

Paleontologists believe that the first animals naturally came from the ocean. The ocean is rich in algae and minerals which marine animals (among them, the fish) had to feed on to thrive and proliferate.

Evolutionists would say that birds evolved from dinosaurs millions of years after the appearance of the fish, BUT:

  • In 2000, American paleontologists discovered a genuine fossil of a feathered winged creature, called the Longisquama, which they believe existed at least 75 million years before dinosaurs appeared on earth. The bird is the only animal that has feathers, and if the bird existed before the dinosaurs, it could not have evolved from dinosaurs.

DAY 6: And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. [1:24-25]

According to zoologists, there are about 1,072,000 species of modern animals whose ancestry can be traced to only 50,000 species of prehistoric animals. This means that all dogs in the modern world (house dogs, wolves, foxes, etc.) had a common prehistoric ancestor; the same can be said about other animals.

QUESTION: Did these 50,000 species of prehistoric animals undergo EVOLUTION or ADAPTATION, resulting in 1,072,000 species of modern animals?

Evolution involves one type of animal turning into another type of animal (e.g., from dinosaur to bird). Adaptation involves an animal’s changing of its physical appearance in order to adapt to its environment, but the animal does not turn into another type of animal. Its DNA doesn’t undergo farfetched mutations.

ANSWER: Dr. Duane Gish from the University of California at Berkeley says that for a theory to qualify as a scientific law, it must be supported by events, processes and properties which can be observed and demonstrated independently.

Evolution is still just a THEORY because it has never been observed. Furthermore, according to Dr. Donald Chittick, a science professor at George Fox College in the U.S.: “Fossil evidence provides no support for the idea that one type of animal has changed into another type of animal. For example, fish appear in the fossil record as fish. There is no evidence of their becoming fish. How do we recognize a fish in the fossil record? Because it looks like present-day fish.”

The only "evidence" that evolutionists have are fossils or bones that simply resemble those of still existing animals. Evolutionists would then assume that modern animals descended from these prehistoric animals whose remains are these bones/fossils. Take for example the prehistoric animal called the MIACID. Evolutionists would say that the dog and the cat have the Miacid as their common ancestor, simply because the remains of Miacids look like a cross between the dog and the cat. But that is ONLY an assumption; there is a 50% chance that the Miacid may have been a separate species in itself (totally unrelated to the dog or the cat) which can never be studied further because it is extinct and its DNA is too old to be analyzed. An open-minded scientist cannot be 100% sure to claim that the Miacid is indeed the common ancestor of the dog and cat.

???

When the remains of the duck-billed platypus were discovered in 1799, scientist George Shaw and other naturalists thought it was a hoax composed of a mole's body and a duck's bill. Evolution propounder Charles Darwin wasn't born until 1809. But if the notion of evolution were already circling around, pre-Darwinian pro-evolutionists might have easily assumed that the mole and the duck have the platypus as a common ancestor, simply because of the similarities between the anatomies of these three animals. With the advancement in genetic science, even modern evolutionists scoff at the idea of the mole and the duck's having descended from the platypus.

On the other hand, adaptation is considered a LAW in biological science because it has been observed in modern-day animals, such as the chicken. Archeologists have found ancient chicken bones along the Yellow River (where the early Chinese civilization flourished). Put together, the bones revealed that chickens in ancient China were small, thin and could fly! It is assumed that the Chinese domesticated the chicken and fattened it up -- leading to the plumpiness of the bird that now prevented it from flying. The chicken did NOT evolve; it simply adapted to the environment provided by its captors. From then till now, it still has the same chicken DNA. (So don't expect the chicken to evolve into a pig in a million years.)

The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. [2:7]

For many centuries, scientists have found it difficult to believe that any living thing could come from clay (as stated in Genesis). Yet in 2003, three doctors at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston discovered that genetic material and cell membranes form new life when they are catalyzed in montmorillonite clay! The mixture was found to undergo simple cell division. Montmorillonite clay contains microscopic crystals that produce minute amounts of electricity for sparking a human/animal cell into development. Interestingly, this clay was also absorbed into the organ, becoming flesh!

QUESTION: But what about claims by evolutionists that humans evolved from monkeys?

ANSWER: As stated before, Evolution is still just a theory because not all scientists believe in it. The only "evidence" that evolutionists have to support monkeys' evolving into humans are fossils or bones that resemble human body parts. In fact, many "ape-men" have been (or should be) taken out of the Evolutionary chart for the following reasons:

  • Some ape-men skeletons turned out to be those of other animals, totally non-human. The Australopethicus "Lucy" Afaranensis turned out to be just a pygmy chimpanzee. The Ramapithecus has now been established to be just an extinct type of orangutan.
  • Some ape-men were merely constructed out of a single piece of bone. The Nebraska Man was derived from a tooth, which turned out to be that of a wild pig. The Orce Man was derived from a skull, which turned out to be that of a young donkey.
  • Some ape-men fossils were fraudulent composites of human and animal bones. The Java Man's teeth and femure were human but his skull cap belonged to an ape. The Piltdown Man's skull was human but his jawbone belonged to an orangutan.
  • Some ape-men remains were not ape-men at all; they're real humans. not missing links. Based on his brain cavity, the Homo Erectus had a brain size similar to that of modern humans. Based on burial sites, the Neanderthal even believed in the afterlife.
We have yet to find a whole skeleton that resembles that of a monkey, but shows human DNA. Yet, even DNA testing cannot be used as a foolproof evidence for an evolutionary relationship between man and monkey. Evolutionists have always assumed that the chimpanzee’s DNA has the closest resemblance to human DNA, with only a 0.6% difference. But in 2002, the California Institute of Technology comprehensively tested chimpanzee DNA and was very shocked when it was found to have a 5% difference from human DNA! The animal that is closest to humans would then be the pig -- with only a 4% difference from ours.

A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold...The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. [2:10-11, 13-14]

Abundant fuel resources in the Middle East and satellite pho-imaging technology have convinced archeologists that this region used to be fertile with vegetation and flowing with rivers. These rivers have dried up around 3,500-2,000 BC due to climactic changes. After researching around the Euphrates River (which still exists, in Iraq), by 2000 three other dried-up major riverbeds were discovered: the Wadi al Batin (identified as the ancient Pishon), Karun (Gihon) and Hiddekel (Tigris). These rivers flowed between Africa and Asia, placing Eden in this region

The LORD God said, "It is not good for Adam to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." [2:18]

So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib He had taken from the rib of the man, and He brought her to the man. [2:21-22]

Humans normally have 12 sets of ribs, but about 20% of men have been found to have a missing pair.

Man has the XY chromosome while the woman has XX chromosome. In 1998, geneticists and cloning experts have determined that the Y chromosome is necessary to produce a male baby while the X is dominant in a female. Therefore, a woman's DNA (having just the X) could produce only a female clone, but a man's DNA has a 50-50 chance of producing either a male or female (depending on how the cloner "tweeks" the sexuality of the clone).

The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. [2:25]

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

"You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as He was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?"

He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" [3:1-11]

Many Bible scholars believe that the "forbidden fruit" is the fig because, firstly, Adam and Eve made coverings out of fig leaves (the plant that was most accessable to them at that moment).

Secondly, nutritionists say that figs are rich in minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin B which helps produce sex hormones, thus making figs an aphrodisiac. If this is the case, then Adam and Eve's eating the figs caused them to get aroused and have erotic thoughts about each other (both of them being naked, after all).

Did they die at that moment? No. So did God lie? No, because God never said, "If you eat of the fruit, you would die INSTANTLY." God knew that Adam and Eve were practically "babies" in Eden. He wanted to educate them at the proper time, not to overwhelm them with knowledge that they couldn't handle. When they partook of the fruit, their minds generated stuff that immediately confused them.

Psychologists have spoken about the id, which is the primal instinct of a person. The id is most active in young people who are immature in handling their emotions and desires. When school-age children are given a choice (say, cola and carrot juice), they have the tendency to choose what is not good for them (the cola), which then leads to an unhealthy diet, and unhealthy diets shorten people's lives. That is what God meant about dying when eating the fruit of knowledge that He wanted to be withheld for some time. But the plan was screwed up.

So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life." [3:14]

In 2002, researchers from the Hebrew University in Israel discovered the fossils of snakes with legs! They have been called Haasiophis Terrasanctus and convinced even evolutionists that snakes used to walk on earth.

Adam named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all the living. [3:20]

In 1988, geneticists from the University of California at Berkeley analyzed an international assortment of genes and found a common denominator in all of them: African-Asian DNA! In 1997, further study revealed that this DNA has been present in humans for only about 6,000 years -- contrary to what evolutionists are saying that humans had fully evolved from monkeys 3 million years ago. No human DNA has been found to be older than 6,000 years.

The Atheist Doesn't Exist

I tell you there's
nothing else out
there. This is it.

10 Not-So-Good Excuses Not to Believe in God & 10 Very Good Reasons to Do So

I've taken note of what many Mainland Chinese use as an excuse not to believe in God (the true God, that is -- not the one worshipped by the Falun Gong cult), and here are the top ten of them (rebuttaled by me, my reasons which you could use to respond to their lame excuses).

He doesn't exist,
he doesn't exist!
Martha said so!

#1: I'm a Communist, and Communists don't believe in God. I put my trust in Chairman Mao Zedong and the Communist Party.

But where does it say that atheism is synonymous with communism? If we go back to the original meaning of communism, it simply means "sharing things equally among members of a community." People have associated communism with atheism and fascism, but the atheistic and fascist features in modern China's communist plight are just excess baggage from Karl Marx and Nicolai Lenin.

In fact, Christianity encourages sharing. The Bible says that the new converts to Christianity "shared everything they had." (Acts 4:32-35) First they believed in God, and then they started sharing their possessions. A "theistic Communist" is not a paradox; you can share your possessions and still believe in God. In fact, God will bless you for your generosity.

One must admit that Mao Zedong was only mortal and therefore liable of making errors. The Communist Party cannot deny that their Cultural Revolution was a terrible mistake. However, believe it or not, even the Chairman once said that religion plays an important role in the life of the Chinese people: "Without money to see doctors, poor farmers could still come and pray." (The Private Life of Chairman Mao, Dr. Li Zhisui)

Psalm 146:3-5 says: "Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day, their plans come to nothing. Blessed is he...whose hope is in the LORD his God." If you're to put your trust in anyone or anything, make sure you won't be disappointed. Put your trust in someone who is perfect. No one is perfect except God.

#2: Only foolish people believe in God.

Abraham Lincoln, the American president who abolished slavery in the United States; Jean Henri-Dunant, the Swiss founder of the Red Cross; Albert Einstein, the Jewish scientific genius; Mother Teresa, the Albanian nun who founded the Sisters of Charity -- these people and many others from all walks of life believed that God inspired them to do great things. Can you say that these heroes were foolish because they believed in a myth, something that is not "real"? ("Mr. Lincoln, I think you're stupid for believing in God." Even Chairman Mao once said, "God will not give man a dead end; when a man is under extreme bad luck, he will seek God."

#3: God is not real -- we can't even see Him!

Be open-minded; do not limit your perception of "real" to things that you can see, hear, smell, taste or feel. Scientists tell us that matter is made up of atoms. We believe atoms are real and yet we can't see them. Up until the Middle Ages, people thought that a flat earth was real and a round earth was unreal -- simply because they couldn't feel or see the roundness of the earth. Even scientists admit that they do not have all the answers -- that is why they do research -- so no one can be 100% of everything.

The Bible says that the Hebrew hero and historian Moses met God "face to face." (Deuteronomy 34:10) There are many unexplained things in the universe (e.g., UFOs, crop circles, the Loch Ness monster, stigmatism, etc.), which are always subject to debnate and open interpretation. If Moses claimed that he saw God or something which he believed to be God, there's a 50-50 chance that he did.

#4: I believe in what I can do; I don't need God.

Of course it's important to believe in one's abilities. But you must admit that you are not Superman, and even he sometimes needs help from his super-friends (Batman, Wonder Woman, etc.). And what if your friends cannot be there to help you, and truly the burden you're carrying is too heavy for you to bear alone?

Jesus said that God helps us carry the burdens of life (Matthew 11:28-30). Medical research shows that people who pray are mentally healthier in handling life's trials. It has been proven that people who pray and/or are being prayed for are psychologically resilient in handling trials, and physically stronger even in illness. One of the first scientific studies on the health benefits of prayer was done by Dr. Randolph Byrd of the San Francisco General Medical Center in the late twentieth century. Four hundred patients of similar conditions were divided into two groups. Group A was prayed over by a religious group while Group B was intentionally neglected. The patients didn’t know which group was being prayed for. Six months later, the test results revealed that most of the patients in Group A had become physically, mentally and emotionally healthier than those in Group B. So does prayer work? You will never know unless you pray.

#5: If God is real, why is there suffering in the world?

But that's like saying, "If my parents are working hard, how come we're not rich?" Or if the government by the people is truly for the people, how come many of the people are still hungry? Or if education ensures a good future, how come some college graduates are jobless? The point is this: God helps people through people. Jesus explained that a disabled man is in such a condition "so that the work of God might be displayed in his life." (John 9:1-5) As long as Christians exist in the world, they must do the work of Him who commissioned them to love and charity. If every person on earth could provide himself with all his needs, what's the use of getting out of the house "to reach out and touch someone"? The imperfection in the world makes it necessary for us to depend on each other, to show how we can be heroes to other people. Honestly: if our life stories were published, no one would be interested in reading a biography about a person who never experienced suffering; the bestsellers would be the biographies of people who braved through their trials.

#6: I believe in science; the Bible is unscientific.

Isaac Newton, the discoverer of gravity, considered the Bible to be the most valuable source of truth. That the world floated in outer space (Job 26:7), that it was round (Isaiah 40:22), and that it rotated on its axis (Job 38:12-14) are just a few of the numerous cosmic facts that were already mentioned in the Bible centuries before they were confirmed by scientists. As scientific technology advances and more archealogical secrets are discovered, they confirm (more than disclaim) the fantastic things mentioned in the Bible. It seems that the Bible is actually ahead of modern science.

There are other many famous scientists who believed in God's existence: Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, Francois Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington Carver and Albert Einstein. They knew that science could explain only how matter works in the physical world, but it cannot explain how that matter just popped out of thin air. Questions such as "What's the purpose of my existence?" or "Is there life after death?" can never be answered by science.

#7: I can be a good person even if I don't believe in God; if Heaven exists, I'd still go there.

A baby that is born into the world has a 50% chance of growing into a good person, and a 50% chance of growing into a bad person. If that person believes in a God of love and goodness, his chances of becoming a good person increases to as much as 75%. In 2002, then President Jiang Zemin led a three-day meeting in Beijing to discuss with the Communist Party the important role of religion in instilling morality in the hearts of the Chinese people.

Some people are "good" only because the government is watching them. They might do evil if they know that the police won't be able to find out about it. Believing in God involves being aware that someone in heaven knows your every move, whether public or private, so you would be careful with your actions and even your thoughts.

It’s only fair that hardworking employees should be given a raise, just as good people should go to heaven. But what if you’re a hard worker, but you don’t even have a contract of employment with the company -- should the company give you a salary? Non-employees don’t get paid, and lazy employees get fired. No one can be sure whether or not heaven follows the same principle. So to be safe, why not believe in God?

You'd never truly appreciate car insurance until your car gets totalled. Likewise, believing in God is your soul's insurance. As the French mathematician Blaise Pascal wrote: "Would you lose anything if you were to believe in God? If you believe in Him, but He does not exist, you lose nothing. If you believe in Him, and He does exist, you gain everything. So do not gamble on His existence."

#8: I put my trust in Confucius. Or the Buddha -- they're gods, aren't they?

Confucius was a wise philosopher who knew his limits. he never ascribed worship for himself, thus admitting that he was not God. Being mortal, he too was liable of making mistakes. His version of the Golden Rule, "Do not do to others that which you do not want done to you," is passive and therefore imperfect. In Luke 6:31, Jesus exhorted, "Do to others as you would have them do to you." Jesus's version is better for it encourages you to be active in doing good, rather than doing nothing at all. So consider Jesus's other teachings that are more practical. Confucius was good enough during his time, but someone far wiser came along.

The core of the Buddha's teaching is giving up desire to avoid suffering. His advice is sensible in some cases -- such as when we have a desire for something while being unmindful of its tragic consequences. But the Buddha was wrong to say that life is just suffering. In John 16:24, Jesus said, "Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." Desire itself does not cause suffering; it is what we desire which might cause our suffering. But if God deems that what we're praying for is going to be good for us according to His plan, He will not refuse to grant it to make us happy. Jesus desired for mortals to live their lives to the full amidst the challenges. If the Buddha is wrong, he can't be God.

#9: Christianity is the religion of the Western Imperialists.

Christianity should not be judged according to the misdeeds of people who claimed to be Christians but lacked Jesus's virtues. The Crusades of the Dark Ages and the Inquisition of the Middle Ages were authorized by corrupt people in the Roman Catholic Church. The apathy of some foreign missionaries from the West towards their governments' policies to conquer-and-divide the East is not what Jesus had taught. In Matthew 5:5-6, 9, Jesus taught that the lamblike "will inherit the earth"; that those who hunger for justice "will be filled"; and that bringers of good will "will be called sons of God." If we hold on to these promises, we can have hope that divine justice will mete out punishment on the perpetrators of cruelty and compensate their victims.

#10: We can never know who the true God is.

It is not so difficult to choose where to place your faith, even with a smorgasbord of belief systems all claiming to be the "true religion." There are seven criteria that will be helpful in your search for the "True God":

Criterion #1: A good religion worships an eternal and personal God. The God of a good religion should be eternal -- that is, immortal. Some religions require you to worship a mortal, whose lifestyle may not even be exemplary. The focus of your worship should be a personal God whom you could treat as a friend especially during your personal tribulations. If your God is as temporal and impersonal as a gold-plated wooden idol, you will be so disappointed.

Criterion #2: A good religion promises life after death. Your fellow mortals cannot provide you with immortality. Atheism openly doesn't promise life after death. If you constantly seek justice in the physical world, why not also desire for justice in the spiritual world? Wouldn't you want to be rewarded in the afterlife for your righteousness on earth? Doing good is the purpose of your existence; being rewarded for it is a bonus.

Criterion #3: A good religion is based on love. That is love for yourself, love for your neighbors, love even for your enemies and especially love for God. Love for humanity cannot be expressed from a monastery. A good religionist is not an isolationist. And if your religion prescribes jihad, you are involved in a cult of hatred.

Crierion #4: A good religion makes you a better person. Your religion should encourage you to be more careful with your thoughts, words and actions. You are driven to improve yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. You are resolved to abstain from things that can harm you or others. You are inspired to be more charitable with your time, talent and other personal resources. You are moved to protect the environment and conserve natural resources.

Criterion #5: A good religion works in practical daily living. The proverbs of your holy scriptures are applicable in your daily life. The sacred is not separated from the secular. You are conscious that everything you do is for the glory of God and for the happiness of your fellow mortals. Your good religion doesn't use your sex, age or caste to stop you from achieving your personal goals and using your talents for the service of humanity.

Criterion #6: A good religion gives you a sense of joy and hope. You are content though you do not have everything you want. You believe that God has strengthened your patience and perseverance; trials cannot suck the joy and hope from living. In good times, your fellow believers share in your happiness; in bad times, they share their comfort. You carry one another's crosses with a smile. You have all achieved heaven on earth.

Criterion #7: The true and best religion has all of the above.

  • Christianity worships an eternal and personal God: The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. (Deuteronomy 33:27)
  • Christianity promises life after death: "In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)
  • Christianity is based on love: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:30-31)
  • Christianity makes you a better person: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come. (II Corinthians 5:17)
  • Christianity works in practical daily living: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31)
  • Christianity gives you a sense of joy and hope: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. (Romans 12:12)
  • Christianity was founded by Jesus Christ: He is the image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15

Live Action Drama. If you want your Bible attendees to breeze through the first 22 chapters of Genesis, this is the movie for them. I don't know of other serious movies with Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel portrayed by live actors, not as cartoon characters. Certainly its presentation of Noah and Lot is closer to Scripture than in the Hallmark made-for-TV movie Noah's Ark (whose writer abused his artistic license for showing that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah preceded the Deluge, and that other people besides Noah's family survived the great flood.) However, Noah's ark looks like a ship of reeds and doesn't follow the specifications in Genesis to make it appear box-like. Other chapters: the Tower of Babel, the destruction of Sodom, Abraham and Isaac.

"Abraham"
from The Bible (TB) series

R3 DVD
  English audio

Live Action Drama. The largest television production ever undertaken, sold in more than 140 countries worldwide, The Bible Series has received 3 Cable Ace and 11 Emmy nominations and an Emmy award for Outstanding Miniseries. Over fifteen years in development and a further ten in the making, the series' aim is to bring the stories of the Old Testament to life for contemporary audiences using big screen film methods and the best actors and directors available.

"Abraham" has details that The Bible: In the Beginning doesn't have such as Abraham's journey through Egypt and lending Sarah to become the pharaoh's concubine. It's a bit disappointing because the people of Sodom were not portrayed as absolutely creepy as in The Bible: In the Beginning, and Ishmael is shown to be rather friendly towards Isaac, instead of being hostile as recorded in Scripture.

Animation. DreamWorks' take on the Biblical story of the Exodus. Artistic license changed some details in the story (e.g., Moses accidentally pushes from the scaffolding a slavedriver who then plummets to his death and the act is witnessed by everybody, instead of the Scriptural account about Moses' secretly killing the slavedriver), but these changes are minor, and the story retains its major events. Interspersed with beautiful songs that can be taught in the Bible study. A special feature of this DVD is a music video which is an excerpt from the scene in which the Hebrews leave Egypt. The Hebrews sing "When You Believe" in a medley of various languages, including Mandarin, which your Chinese students would love.

Live Action Drama. This take on Samson, arguably the most famous of the pre-monarchical Judges, is a tad tiresome because many extrabiblical characters and events were made up to extend the hero's story. I suggest that the movie be shown in three parts; during the first two Bible studies during which you watch the first two parts, you could discuss the most important events in the book of Judges (Deborah, Gideon, etc.), then on the third Bible study conclude with Samson's tenure as a Judge.

Live Action Drama. A bit slow at first, but gathers steam especially during David's kingship. The battle between the shepherd boy and Goliath -- which is one of the highest points in David's life -- leaves a lot to be desired (e.g., Goliath doesn't look so gigantic, and even as a tall Philistine he doesn't look so formidable). It is David's activities (i.e., sinful ones) that make the movie more interesting in the later half.BOX SET of 6 Discs (i.e., 5 other Biblical stories, not sold individually) from www.innoform.com.sg

Live Action Drama. As it is common of all films under Roger Young's direction, "Solomon" is dashed with light humor and some ancient Semitic cultural elements that would be a bit difficult to be understood by modern and Westernized viewers have been reinterpreted to adapt to their mentality. Young is also fond of filling in the gaps of a story by relying on extrabiblical sources to make the general theme and mood of his film well-rounded (e.g., the romance between Solomon and the Queen of Sheba is not Biblical, but is mentioned by other literary and historical sources). More entertaining than the predecessor "David" which was not directed by Young.BOX SET of 6 Discs (i.e., 5 other Biblical stories, not sold individually) from www.innoform.com.sg

The Nativity Story

English & Chinese subtitles
Live Action Drama. Played in theaters worldwide in December 2006, this movie is perhaps one of the most realistic portrayals of the events and persons involved in Jesus' conception and birth. The actors speak in English, but with accents suiting the characters they play; in fact, the Jewish characters have convincingly Semitic features while the Roman characters have Caucasian  features. While the filmmakers sought to give the movie a genuine feel, they did not neglect certain elements to provide the viewers that familiar "Christmas postcard" impression. The background music is a refreshing rendition of classic Christmas carols (e.g., "O Come, O Come Immanuel," "Silent Night," etc.).

Live Action Drama. Perhaps the movie where Jesus has been shown to be most human, His stoic personality totally non-existent. The film has many scenes that older viewers may find unsettling: Mary of Bethany's crush on Jesus (unrequited, however), Satan sometimes portrayed as a seductive woman, Jesus walking in the modern world with some children, etc. I personally consider it as the best movie in making Jesus relatable/identifiable with us mortals.BOX SET of 6 Discs (i.e., 5 other Biblical stories, not sold individually) from www.innoform.com.sg

One of the ending scenes shows Jesus being married to His bride, which represents the church. Notice how the terrorists who have hijacked the plane shout, "Allahu akbar (God is great)!" -- evidence of their religious fanaticism and extremism. A great movie to discuss jihad and the other violent elements of Islam.a DVD shop in Jiamusi, Heilongjiang, China

Picture of Video JacketTHE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Some Christians and non-Christians may find the style of "comic book evangelist" Jack T. Chick a bit blunt but, when applied in the proper context, his video The Light of the World will make anyone who is making an honest search for the truth realize that there is actually little political correctness in the Bible. The essence of the Bible is Jesus Christ: He was promised in the Old Testament, and the promise was fulfilled in the New Testament. Being The Light of the world, His mission was to drive away Satan's darkness. To the Chinese Christian, irreligiousness and idolatry are the darknesses that are plaguing Chinese society. If your Bible study attendees are learning the chronological events in the Good Book and you're nearing the New Testament, this video is most timely; it's a great ender for the OT and a great introduction to the NT. I also recommend it if you're studying about who Lucifer/Satan is, or what hell is like (some of Mr. Chick's vivid paintings can scare the hell out of the believer and scare the hell INTO the atheist). This video is available in different languages, including Chinese.
