Biography

HIS PAST RIGHT THROUGH TO NOW!

Let's get one thing straight: Johnny Depp doesn't care what you think of him. He doesn't care if you think he's hot. He doesn't want to know what you think about his hot French wife, his hot Sunset Strip nightclub, his hot friends, his hot temper, or his hot ass. On any other actor, this apathy might come off as megalomaniacal ego. Nobody wants to be Johnny Depp more than Vincent Gallo, for example. But he's not. And he will never be. Because Johnny Depp is a good actor. We could stop the Fame Audit right here, because that's the final answer on Johnny Depp. He's famous because he's good at what he does. Despite all of his attempts to make us dislike him or at least knock him down a few notches, our belief in him keeps him a star. He's that ex-boyfriend you keep lending money to because you know one day everyone will see how big a genius only you know he is. It's sometimes painful and shameful, but with Johnny Depp, you know it's going to be worth it in the end.

John Christopher Depp II was born on 9th June 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, and moved to Miramar, Florida when he was very young.  When he was 12, he was bought a guitar, which then became his obsession, prompting him to start up a music career, which he did when he dropped out of school, aged 16. He played in a group called  "The Kids" who opened for several big artists including Iggy Pop. His band moved to Los Angeles with hopes of making it big. Here he met makeup artsit Lori Allison, whom he married aged 20. His music career failed to take off and Johnny resorted to selling pens over the phone to make ends meet.......a divorce soon followed. However, during these years, Lori had introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage. Although at first they didn't  get on, they soon became good friends, and Cage was the one who convinced him to try his hand at acting and sign on with his agent. His first ever audtion was for "Nightmare On Elm Street" (Wes Craven, 1984). Mr Craven asked his daughter to pick the actor for the part and she picked Johnny. Although it wasn't a very good part (being eaten in bed), Johnny's acting career was launched. He next starred in "Private Resort" (1985) and appeared as the translator in oscar winning "Platoon" (1986).

He then auditioned and was offered a part in tv series "21 Jump Street", playing the part of Officer Tom Hanson (Fox, 1987-90). The charcter was part of an undercover police unit who infiltrate countless schools where the good kids were kept from learning by the "ne'er-do-wells". It was here that Johnny achieved his teen idol status, having swarms of young girls drooling over him! After 4 seasons, Johnny wanted out and left the programme, wanting to make it in the movies. He returned in 1990 with 2 films - "Cry Baby" and "Edward Scissorhands", which were both huge hits for him.

Johnny's film career has exhibited an unwillingness to settle for the conventional heartthrob roles and an eye for distincitve filmmakers and material. In 1992, Depp starred in "Arizona Dream" alongside Jerry Lewis, playing a young man unwillingly called to Arizona to take over the family business. "Benny and Joon" (1993), he played a modern-day circus performer who was romancing a mentally disturbed woman. Also in 1993, he starred in the film that launched Leonardo De-Caprio's career- "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?", playing mentally disabled Leonardo Di-Caprio's elder brother. In 1994, he starred in "Ed Wood", winning critical aclaim as a cross-dressing, famed cult director who created terrible films.

Finally using his good looks, Depp donned a mask for the title role in "Don Juan DeMarco" in 1995, playing a modern incarnation of the famous lover opposite Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway, and was also in "Nick of Time" (also 1995).  He starred in quirky western "Dead Man" in 1996, and played the title role in "Donnie Brasco" in 1997 as an undercover cop who infiltrates a crime family and befriends the leader- his first truely adult role.

In 1997, Depp also made his first directorial debut with "The Brave", co-written with his brother D.P.Depp and Paul McCudden; where he starred as a father who agrees to play the victim in a snuff film to earn money for his family- this earnt negative reviews. Another box office disappointment was as drug-crazed Raoul Duke in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998).

In 1999, Depp starred in 3 thrillers- "The Astronaut's Wife" which was another flop, as was "The Ninth Gate" and finally "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". This was a huge hit for Depp after his losing streak, playing Icabod Crane, a neurotic, prissy and not very courageous hero. After the sucess of Sleepy Hollow, Johhny starred in 2more 1999 movies- Cuban poet-novelist Reinaldo Arenas in "Before Night Falls" and Christina Ricci's gypsy love interest in "The Man who Cried".

He returned to the world of drugs for "Blow" in 2000, playing George Jung, an  American who became a major coacine trafficker for Colombian kingpin Pablo Escobar.  He also starred in "From Hell", a story about the saga of British serial killer Jack the Ripper.

Johnny also stars as J.M Barrie in "Neverland"- to be released in 2004, based on the play "The Man who was Peter Pan".

It appears that Johnny Depp is so talented in our eyes that his fame stays untarnished, no matter how many celebrity clichés he falls into. He did drugs. Who cares? He slept around. Good for him! He destroyed a hotel room. We wish we could do that! He beat up paparazzi. Bravo! He was engaged to Sherilynn Fenn. Who wasn't? He was engaged to Jennifer Grey. What a nice guy! He was engaged to Winona Ryder, tattooing "Winona Forever" on his arm. What a romantic! He spent many years with dirty Kate Moss. Way to score a supermodel! Johnny's now married to another bad-boy cliché: the pop star (Had anyone heard of Vanessa Paradis before he had a baby with her?). Johnny changed his Winona tattoo to now read "Wino Forever." And instead of rolling our eyes, once again we shook our heads with a sly grin. "Oh, Johnny. You're simply incorrigible!" He's got a horrible sense in fashion. It seems he never bathes. He curses America and swears he'll never raise a child there. He inhales more hand-rolled cigarettes than he breathes oxygen. He's almost daring us to find him disgusting. He wants us to disapprove. He wants us to turn our heads and leave him alone. But we won't. Because we know. That's Johnny Depp in there.

Maybe we can buy a little piece of land and elect Johnny the mayor and he can run it with his own rules and let his wacky homeless friends run around and make wonderful Bohemian music all day long. Yeah! Let's do it! Let's do it for Johnny, man! Let's do it for Johnny!

An insight into the mind of Johnny

Here a list of good quotes from magazine interviews with Johnny- alot more insightful than alot of actors who can barely manage to form full sentences!

There seems to be a constant theme in things I do which deal with people who are considered "freaks" by so-called "normal" people.  It's not my goal to become the biggest box office star in the world.
                                                                                            ***
Clowns scare me.  I have this fear of clowns, so I think that if I surround myself with them, it will ward off all evil.
                                                                                            ***
Regarding his teeth...I'm proud of these.  When I see people with perfect teeth, it drives me up the wall.
                                                                                            ***
If someone were to harm my family or a friend or somebody I love, I would eat them.  I might end up in jail for 500 years, but I would eat them.
                                                                                            ***
With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it.  There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting.  It's lying.
                                                                                            ***
...What I like does tend to be left-field.  I feel somehow much more comfortable playing it.  I relate more easily than I do when I run across straight roles.  I hate the obvious stuff, I just don't respond to it.
                                                                                            ***
To say I opened a night club to allow people to do drugs, even in the bathroom - do people think I'm insane?  Do they think I'm going to throw everything away - even my own children's future, so people could get high in a nightclub?  It's ridiculous.
                                                                                            ***
I guess I'm attracted to these off beat roles because my life has been a bit abnormal.  The only thing I have a problem with is being labeled.
                                                                                            ***
This is a rumor-filled society and if people want to sit around and talk about whom I've dated, then I'd say they have a lot of spare time and should consider other topics...or masturbation.
                                                                                            ***
I'm 30 different people sometimes.  One day you wake up and you're somebody else, nowhere near who you were when you went to sleep.  Unfortunately, I feel more comfortable in front of the movie camera than I do in real life.
                                                                                            ***
"The only gossip I'm interested in is things from the Weekly World News  - 'Woman's bra bursts, 11 injured'.  That kind of thing."
                                                                                            ***
"Anything I've done up till May 27, 1999 was kind of an illusion, existing without living. My daughter, the birth of my daughter, gave me life."
                                                                                            ***
I'm sounding like John Denver or something, but I look forward to having a kind of peace of mind. I know that we all get there eventually.
                                                                                            ***
Nah (about quiting smoking). I think if you find something your good at you sould stick with it. I have switched to lights though. It got to where I would weeze going up a flight of stairs, so I went to diet cigarettes.
                                                                                            ***
Fame, celebrity--it's not such a big deal in Europe. People seem to understand that you just have a weird job. They're not running after you, trying to carve chunks out of you. It's strange in the states. Most fans here are great, but there's a handful who have seen the movies and feel they know you. They think it's alright to touch you and ask personal questions.
                                                                                            ***
If there's anything I really want, it's privacy. It's the island idea.
                                                                                            ***
I read that I was in bed with her, which is a ton of shit. I have met her and it went like this: 'How do you do?' 'Hello, how are you?' Now when anyone asks about my affair with Madonna I say no, wrong - it was the Pope. He swept me off my feet.
                                                                                            ***
It would be interesting to think that we're sitting here in the flesh when in fact we're surrounded by many, many spirits just whirling and whizzing in and out and in-between us. It's an interesting idea. I've always thought that, in fact someone, somewhere must have been steering my boat that I'm on...
                                                                                            ***
My sister Christi had a baby when I was 17, and I had just heard about crib death. The horrible thing was that it wasn't understood. For some unknown reason the baby would stop breathing. So I would sneak into where the baby was sleeping and put my hand in her crib, hold her little finger, and I'd sleep on the floor like that. It was stupid, I'm sure. But I thought the warmth of my hand might help, that maybe if she felt my pulse it would remind her to breathe.
                                                                                            ***
I never had the brightest view of human nature. I think humanity - society, at least --is violent. It's not getting any better. I don't think I'm cynical, but I do think maybe the world is more... sinful than ever before.
                                                                                           ***
There's an English show I love called Whose Line Is It Anyway? It's all improvisation. Brilliant, quick, clever comics--spontaneity with both barrels. I wish I could do that show.
                                                                                           ***
I have a funny relationship with my body...Ah, it sounds so stupid, but for me there shouldn't be any half way.

                                                                               ***

Well, cars kill too, so do airplanes, and many other things. Now they find that cell phones cause cancer, but I've never seen anywhere "Attention, cell phones are bad for your health". I know alot of people who've died of lung cancer and hadn't smoked a single cigarette in their life. well, look, no doubt, smoking is not something that's good for your health. Well, I'd say, at the risk of sounding corny, that you have t do everything to a reasonable extent. But how can you take the fact that in L.A., one of the most contaminated cities on the planet, they tell that you can't smoke 'cause your smoke is bothering them'. You know....in L.A., where you breathe and it's like you've put your head in an exhaust pipe.

"I think one of the greatest gifts that we as human beings have is our instinct, is that initial feeling you get about something. I think that's a great gift, and sometimes we overlook it."

"I just don't want to look back in 30 or 40 or 50 years and have my grandkids say, 'You did a lot of stupid shit,Granddad. What an idiot you were, smiling for the cameras and playing the game.'"

"People perceive me as some hotel-wrecking, drug-addled... fiend. I'm not remotely close to that. Not slightly."

"The beauty, the poetry of the fear in their eyes. I didn't mind going to jail for, what, five, six hours? It was absolutely worth it."

"I'm shy, paranoid, whatever word you want to use. I hate fame. I've done everything I can to avoid it."

"I'm not Blockbuster Boy."

"On meeting Vanessa Paradis' dad and telling him she was pregnant after only 3 months together: I thought he would just f**king nut me."

"I pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion just because of the expressionist leaves on my face."

"'When kids hit 1 year old, it's like hanging out with a miniature drunk. You have to hold onto them. They bump into things. They laugh and cry. They urinate. They vomit.' "

I don't try to be Captain Weird, I just do what I do.

"My upbringing made me as I am now. But I can become merry and happy at once. There were many years I was feeling at a loss about my life or how I grew up. I couldn't understand what is right or what is precious. At that time, I was so miserable and self-defeating. I was feeling angry with various things. My anger came up to the surface then. I don't say such tendency has disappeared. Even now there are anger and the dark side in myself. But it's the first time I've been so close to the light."
