"If one is measured in life by the people they touch and are never forgotten by them, then John is greater than any size. His selfless acts that made him the protector he was. All the way into his last days here with us... he was a true Hero..." - Taken from Jerry's tribute

"John Young was not just a son, brother, uncle, nephew, or friend. He was something more than he could have ever imagined... A Hero..." - Taken from Jerry's tribute

"My darling young son, John, came into this world on February 21, 1983, and brought great joy to his mother, father, 2 brothers, and sister. His wild red hair stood up straight on his little head and he had a smile that drew everyone to him and made them smile. He never knew a stranger.
He would walk up to little old ladies in the grocery and tug on their skirts and ask, “Are you my grandma?” John would sketch fantastic ninja turtles and battle figures from the age of seven, when he told me the picture “ just comes out of my brain, flows down my arm, and comes out on the paper.” - Penny, John's mother

What one knows is, in youth, of little moment; they know enough who know how to learn...

"I salute you Spc Young for all you have done!

YOU are a TRUE AMERICAN HERO, "all gave some but some gave all". You and others like my son and Marc Graf from the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) took the fight to the terrorist out of Camp Stryker, Iraq in order to eleminate them instead of them coming to our shores. You were blessed with one of GOD's gift, being a driver of a hummer you had a sharp EYE for spotting IED's along the roads. Far that everyone wanted to be in your hummer, they felt safe. To me thats a huge burden to look after the well being of others in your vehicle. BUT you NO, your reply "it's my job". So now, your mission is complete Soldier, stand down.

We have taken over the watch. Thank you for your service and looking after the well being of our sons. I talked to your mother this morning. We laughed cried while sharing stories of the group 'Delta Demons'. She is so proud of how you've grown up and what you stood for. Any mother in the world would of been blessed to have a son as you.

As I close here John, I know in my heart your seated beside our Lord Jesus Christ looking down giving added comfort and strength to your mother and family. So rest in peace until we all meet again in heaven. You will forever be in our prayers and never forgotten, so rest in peace my brother-in-arms..."

PAD (Proud Army Dad)

"John was proud to be in the Infantry, telling me that he wouldn’t have joined the Army if he hadn’t been willing to go the front lines. John served with the 10th Mountain Division in Iraq, and he drove the lead HUMVEE in his patrol because he was the best at spotting IEDs (an improvised explosive device (IED) is a bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military action. They may be partially comprised of conventional military explosives, such as an artillery round, attached to a detonating mechanism).
He is credited with saving many lives because he found 20 IEDs. His Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeants, and comrades all credit him with the rest of his Platoon returning home safely. My son was killed Sept 21, 2007 in the 13th month of his deployment. I choose to focus not on his tragic death... but on his heroic and courageous life..."
- Penny, John's mother

"It’s hard to accept that he’s gone, to know that we’re not going to live the rest of our lives together. But one thing that won’t die is John’s impression on all of our lives. We have memories of John to share with each other, to remind us of a great man. John Young, you live through us, my brother. With one last great hug.... - from Jerry's tribute

"Today is Wednesday and tomorrow I leave to go to Fort Drum for John’s memorial service. I struggled for so long before deciding to go because I didn’t think I would have the courage to go by myself..." - Penny Young

"My daughter, I love you and I would never leave you... when you look back on the low moments in your lfe and see only one set of footprints in the sand... it was then that I carried you..." - from the poem "Footprints" author unknown

"As a friend, we took John’s wisdom like a sponge. If you ever had an in-depth conversation with John you left looking at everything differently. John would sometimes say, “The more I learn, the more I know nothing...." form Jerry's tribute

“But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another...”
