“JOGJA BANGKIT”
Background
The earthquake which ranked 6.2 on the Richter Scale tore through Yogyakarta and Central Java, esspecially in Bantul and Klaten districts. The earthquake claimed the lives of over 6000 people, 30.000 people were seriously injured and many hundreds thousand even million others forced to stay at emergency shelters because their houses they built turned to ruins causing an emergency situation and reaking havic on their lives.
The victims had hoped for the goverment (local and national) for help because in reality, they have the capacity to do that. However, unexplainably, the government has done very little to meet the needs of the suffering people. Moreover, after one week many people have not been evacuated, human corpste are still buried under the rubble, and the victims who are sick or injured did not recieved adaquate help. They had been starving in the rural areas and reports showed that some were starving even surrounding the government centers.
Mission
As a result of the information discovered above, immeditaly after earthquake destroyed Yogyakarta and Central Java, The Humanitarian Center “Jogja Bangkit” was built through a coalition of grass root organizations from different sectors including NGO’s and independent volunteers. They work together to research and determine the situations in specific villages that have not recieved government assistance and help the victims by looking for any kind of donation, purchasing basic survival ration, organizing it and then distributing the aid. Furthermore, they are deploying volunteers, training local villagers in resourse management and supporting the youth by developing leadership capibalities to create a sustainable situation in the villages. .
Program
Up to now, The Humanitarian Center “Jogja Bangkit” has built one centeral distribution center, more than 30 centers emergency villages aid centers, and many primary community centers all offering shelters for victims. As increases are made to the supply of the centeral distribution center, the number of village and community centers are growing to better aid those in need and provide for all of their necissities.
Short term program:
The main center of Jogja Bangkit in Yogyakarta has sent more than 100 volunteers in 3 districts, Bantul, Sleman and Klaten, deploy 4-5 volunteers in every center at the village level. Their task is to distribute the supply that is drop from our main center, also working together with local people to build emergency shelters and kitchens, take care them, clean the brick from damaged building, and also investigate for a new places that have not recieved any kind of aid from other NGO’s and the Government. The volunteers are also responsible for relaying information back to the main center to insure an efficient distribution of the goods which are required at any given time.
Long Term Program
Facilitated by volunteers, there will be reguler public meetings in every village and community center to discuss any problems that arise and also assist them to discuss how to restart their lives, rebuild their houses, assist in developing educational programs, and other social facilities. Furthermore, assisting them in rebuilding their method of economic livilhood as well as looking for an alternative funding to control the government project.
