**Proprietor's biography** Proprietors: Kevin & Chickie Alexander Mr. and Mrs. Kevin D. Alexander dedicated this tearoom in memory of Johannah Mary Gale (Chickie's grandmother), who shared her love of those quiet moments with a cup tea and a scone, or a piece of bread with jam, while I was growing up - memories that have lasted a lifetime. She would say to me, "Chick, I'd love a cup of tea" or, "Ah, nothing like a cup of tea, Chick" or "Ah what a lovely cup of tea", in her broken Irish accent, after taking her first sip. It could be early in the morning or in the middle of the day, as a pick me up, or while shopping out on the town, or late at night by the fire, there was always time for a hot cup of tea which had to be served in a bone china tea cup. Her favorite was "Royal Albert, Old country Roses". She wouldn't stand for it to be served in a mug! It had to be a teacup and saucer. She would pour the milk into the cup first and then 2 lumps of sugar, four if they were small lumps then the hot tea. She never liked it too strong or too weak. It had to be just right. Johannah was born in Ireland on September 14, 1904. She married an Englishman named Alfred Gale. Everyone called him "Alfie". She had seven Children: Patsy was the eldest girl and my god- mother, then Kathleen (my Mom), then Laurie (my godfather and the eldest son), then Pauline, then Tony, then Bernadette (Bernie), and then Veronica (Bronkie). My mom, Kathleen Gale, married my dad, Peter B. Lawrence, who she met in England during the war. He was in the Air Force, and stationed at Manston Air Force Base, Margate, England. After the war, they got married and settled in the United States . They had 6 children: Paul, Chickie who is married to Kevin and has 2 sons Dorian and Devin, and step-daughter Christine, Peter, Leslie who is married to Glenn and has a daughter named Kelly Gale, Robin, and Brian who is married to Teresa and have a baby on the way. My grandmother used to fly over every year to see us, or we would go to England to visit her. We were raised on tea. I think my mom used to put it in our bottles as babies. As with her Mom, we had to have tea in a china cup and saucer. Ever since we were young children, we drank our tea with a china cup. My Mom's favorite china was, "Blue Tower" by Spode. We called my grandmother, "Gram". When Gram came to visit, we were so exited. One year my gram sent me a ticket to go to England. I was so upset because I didn't like to fly and I'd have to go by myself. Well, I went and had the best time of my life and continued to go after that. Gram owned a place called Dumfries, in a town called Westgate On Sea. It was like a bed & breakfast. On that trip my gram took me to my first tearoom in Canterbury, Kent, England- I was hooked. We went to tea at my Aunt Patsy's Home in Igtham, Kent, England. Then when I got older , she started bringing me china from England. I couldn't wait to get home after picking her up from the airport because she would unpack her bags and stuffed inside were loads of china and gifts for all. One visit she brought me my first china tea set of Old Country Roses pattern, by Royal Doulton. It was my favorite because, of course, it was her favorite. I loved it! After that each year she would bring me more china. Gram is now at home with the Lord, and I'm sure she is having one big Tea Party with Jesus on the best set of china in Heaven. Those memories of sitting and having tea with my mom and Gram will last forever. And so, as I passed on the tradition of tea-time with my 2 sons, Dorian and Devin, and my step-daughter Christine, I wanted to carry on the past time of tea drinking, eating, enjoying good company and making memories, and spending time in conversation with friends, family and neighbors and with all of you reading this web page. So turn off the phone and the TV and get out and have a "lovely cup of tea".
