Pubs Reviewed

RANGERS

"STADIUM"- LOCATED DIRECTLY OPPOSITE IBROX UNDERGROUND STATION.

This establishment is something to behold. An ugly, cream coloured building with an equally ugly clientele that is made up of haggard old men and young, weedy Glaswegian nyaffs.
The pub assures the prospective customer that there is a big screen TV, live entertainment as well as a seperate lounge area for functions(!)
The ambiance on match days is quite something- full of pissed old men rather sadly regailed in full 'Gers kit (I kid you not) and pissed young men singing "We-are-UVF" and who clearly are not UVF.
The lounge sells watered down Carlsberg as its main lager and surprisingly it also sells my favourite tipple- Guinness. A word of warning though- no one seems to drink the Guinness and I fear that to order the black stuff would be to enter into a trap and you would be at once surrounded by six burly, growling monsters ready to do wicked things to you.
All in all the "Stadium" lounge is not as intimidating as we had first hoped- we'll try the bar area next time.

HEARTS & HIBS(& LIVVY FOR THE BUS/TRAIN GOER)

"MILNES OF ROSE STREET" LOCATED ON ROSE STREET ABOUT 100-200 YARDS FROM THE BUS STANCE IN SAINT ANDREW SQUARE (AS YOU GO TOWARDS THE CASTLE)ALSO A BASEMENT ENTRANCE IN HANOVER STREET

What can I say about this pub? I love this pub to bits and NEVER go to Edinburgh without visiting this place. It's sentimentality I suppose as it was here that I managed to finally get change of a Twenty one Hogmanay to use the pay phone in an attempt to find my mates who I lost- OK the phone was out of order and I was left with twenty quid worth of silver in my pocket- but still.
This was also the venue where we drank to celebrate Savo's last minute winner v Hibs in 2001-2 season. The pub used to be the haunt of many famous (and not so famous) poets and the articles and photos on the walls serve to prove this. The pub itself has an attractive facade and a lovely wooden finish inside. The bar staff are friendly and so are the clientele- you can even get the odd old drunk exchanging some banterous comments. The pub serves one of the best pints of Guinness I have ever sampled and it also does lager and bitter.
The pub serves food but I've never sampled it- but I'm sure it's great! Downstairs has a surprise every turn with all sorts of hidden nooks and crannies- and another bar!
Always mobbed for any big rugby event as it is more of a rugby pub and no football colours are permitted- so you scarfers cover up! Don't let this put you off though as this just adds to the friendly atmosphere. Probably The Best Pub In The World.

HEARTS

"TYNECASTLE ARMS"- Right next to Tynecastle.

This pub with its fireplace and sitting area is a cosy wee place for the Hearts faithful to drink before a game. Adorned on the walls are numerous items of Hearts memorabillia. The bar staff are quite friendly and the pub does a good pint of McEwans 80/-.
The clientele are a friendly sort and it is probably safe to assume that opposition fans (depending on who they are of course) wouldn't get too much hassle- although you may be asked to remove any colours by the doorman. All in all a good wee pub.

HIBS

"ALBION" PUB ALBION ROAD NEXT TO EASTER ROAD

Now I had been told of the legendary status of this pub by a Hibs mate of mine before hand and so I was expecting a rather sizeable pub with a cracking atmosphere. How wrong I was. This pub was a cramped ugly affair with the worst pint of Guinness on offer imaginable. Fair enough the bar staff were reasonably friendly but that just did not do it for me. Also marring the experience was a drunken Celtic fan stumbling around bumping into folk and generally being a pain in the arse. The Albion is a definate place to avoid. Crap.

LIVVY

"THE POWER STATION" Attached to the away section of Almondvale.

A good sized nightclub-cum-away fan pre-match drinking den. A very small bar area which is a nightmare to get served at if there is a big crowd. Unfortunately the beer on offer is as good in quality as you would expect to be served in a nightclub. The DJ, although a very nice man, is questionable. Not least because of his persistance to play 80's music. His only saving grace is that he played "Teenage Kicks" and that tune from World Cup '98 (you know the one) any time I've been there. Definately worth a visit, if only for the banter.
