Jonny and Kate's Sailing Adventures

Live Life!!

Cruisers along the way ...

Here are some of the people we have met on our travels:

Invincible (Mahe 36) - Jo and Kev – http://mahe36.blogspot.com – English:

We met Jo and Kev before we both left. They were waiting for their new cat to be built and we were waiting for our leaving date to tick around. They were really helpful during our final refit months and we are really looking forward to meeting up with them in the Caribbean.

Sal Darago (Westerly Solway 36) - Jeremy and Kathy – http://saldarago.blogspot.com – English:

Jonny’s parents met Jeremy and Kathy at a River Wyre meeting and then we met them at the Christmas party. They left from Fleetwood around the same time as us and are heading to the Caribbean. We saw them briefly in Crosshaven, Ireland and since then we have been following them down the coast – hopefully we will catch them up at some point and we will be able to have drinks and swap stories.

Mike Johnson (Crew: Paul, Zac and Claire) (Custom 42ft Schooner) – American:

We met Mike in Crosshaven, Ireland. He has been sailing for years and had lots of great stories to tell. He was stuck in Crosshaven with us waiting for a window to cross Biscay. We left at the same time but when Mike wasn’t in La Coruna when we arrived we thought he hadn’t left Ireland – he arrived 24hrs later having hoved to during the storms. We had some great meals out with them in La Coruna.

My Star (West Sail 32) – Paul and Jill - www.davidandjillsail.com – American:

We met Jill and Paul in Crosshaven. Paul had sailed the boat over from America with friends and Jill had met him there. They were planning to head over to England before heading down to the med. They were also stuck waiting for weather!!

Milvina (Passoa 47) – Neil and Helen - www.mccubbin.ca – Canadian:

Another boat stuck in Crosshaven due to weather. Milvina had come across from America and was heading up to Scotland (Neils home originally) for the winter. They made Jonnys day when they invited us over for tea and were cooking roast beef!!

Kishorn (Westerly Conway 36) – Lesley and Trevor – English:

We met Kishorn in La Coruna the night before we left. Jonny had spotted their binimi and we went over to talk to them about it. We ended spending the next couple of months together cruising down the coast of Spain and Portugal. Unfortunately we left them in Lagos when we headed to Morocco.

Christine Anne (Adams 42ft Steel) – Russ and Christine – Australian:

Jonny spoke to Russ briefly in Camarinas and then we met them again in Cascais. We cruised southern Portugal and Morocco together and they have put us in touch with friends in Sydney who are helping us find a berth there for our arrival.

Adagio (HR 42) – David and Anne – English:

We met in Bayona and they donated us a pilot book for the Portugese coast. With many many miles under their keel their advice on equipment and provisioning was excellent and gratefully received!

Timari (Custom Wooden) – Tim and Mary – English:

Friends of Adagio we saw them down the Portugese coast a couple of times. Friendly and helpful – typical of all cruisers we have met.

Levington Lass (Nicholson 35) – Andy – English:

One of the many cruisers anchored of Cascais and by coincidence a friend of a friend! A great tale teller with thousands of sea miles and as many stories. Also a dab hand on the guitar for beach bbq’s!

Chautauqua (Shannon 37) – Don and Priscilla – American:

We met in Cascais and sailed Portugal and Morocco together. We did our overland travel in Morocco with Don and Priscilla and have made truly good friends with whom we hope to meet up often.

Equinox (Custom Trimaran) – Renzo and Edith – www.lifeatsea.nl – Dutch:

We met anchored off Sines and have met since in the Canaries. An amazing boat which ‘cruises’ at upto 20 knots! We have to agree though that life onboard doesn’t look quite as luxurious as the more sedately paced Newtsville!

Windancer 4 (Lagoon 440) – John, Ziggy, Connor and Jenny – www.sailblogs.com/member/windancer - Canadian:

We met in Rabat and they had great advice on travel in Morocco for us. We saw them in the Canaries a few times and left them in Las Palmas preparing for the ARC.

Chilli Oyster (Oyster 49) – Dave, Bec, Jordan and India - www.chillioyster.com – English:

We replied to a request from Bec on the internet about info on Morocco. They arrived two days after us and we have been good friends since. We crossed from Morocco to the Canaries together and have enjoyed many beers with them since. We left them in Las Palmas preparing for the ARC but will be in touch with them on the way across and no doubt see them in Caribbean.

Como No (Cape Dory 40) – Will and Annie – American:

We met in Rabat and they were very helpful with advice on the local area. One of the boats on the cruising net we speak to them daily.

A great source of comfort on the radio crossing the atlantic we spoke to Karen everyday and finally got to put a name to the face in Rodney Bay. They are heading back to New Zealand so hopefully we will spend lots more time with them in the pacific.

Doris (Hanse 350) – Simon - http://yachtdoris.blogspot.com – English:

Jonny met him later that evening and then we had a drink with him the next day. He is sailing round the world single handed so hopefully we will catch up with him again soon.

Calysta (Dehler 34) – Andy – German:

We saw Andy all the way down the coast of Portugal but didn’t get chatting to him properly til Lanzarote. We bumped into him again walking through English Harbour, Antigua!! We spent Christmas Day together and then spent an evening with him in Rodney Bay. He is heading through Panama and the Pacific although not sure what his final destination is or plans are!! Hopefully we will meet up again soon.

Sea Mist (Oyster 56) – John, Cheryl and Ian – www.seamist56.com – Canadian:

Long White Cloud (Custom Wooden Ketch) – Steve and Paula – New Zealand:

Lovely couple who we met in the Galapagos who are cruising the world on a beautiful wooden ketch which they built themselves. They were the original source of our yoghurt culture (long story!)

Redwood Coast (Marples 44 Trimaran) – Don and Anne – American:

Kate crewed for them during their canal transit, and Don crewed on Newtsville. We only met them in Panama and haven’t seen them since as they have just finished their ‘lap’ and were heading north for home in California.

Szel (64) – Guy and Karen – American:

We anchored near them in Moorea and they took us snorkeling to see the Sting Rays. A lovely couple who have had the pleasure of two seasons in the Society Islands – we are very jealous!

Ishka (44 Cat) – Ian and Ida – Australian:

A great couple (slightly crazy) who we met in Rangiroa. They are sailing their boat from Miami where they bought her back to New Zealand. We had some wonderfully entertaining nights with them – Ida seems good at leading Kate astray with a bottle of wine!

We read their article in the OCC magazine and then bumped into them in Bora Bora – the first English boat for a while. It transpires they are from Blyth, just around the corner from our house in Newcastle! They are heading the same way as us for a few months, so I’m sure we’ll see more of them.

Kathleen Love (Starlight 39) – Graeme and Gillian – British:

Our second British boat of the day (bit like buses!). Gillian is from Preston (what a small world). They are on year two of their trip and will be passing by Sydney next year – I’m sure we’ll catch up for a beer.
