He stands in the shadow of his great ancestor, the Great Kung Lao, and was the sparring partner and best friend of Earth's champion, his fellow Shaolin monk Liu Kang. As well, he seeks counsel from master Bo' Rai Cho. Of the Earthrealm warriors, Kung Lao is the most outspoken pacifist, although he will not hesitate to severely punish those who attack him, Earthrealm, his friends, or those who speak ill of his ancestors. His trademark is his razor-rimmed hat, which he can employ quite powerfully and effectively in combat. Many of his fatalities often involve the use of his hat to some extent. Kung Lao is defined more by his mindful inwardness and quiet intelligence and inner skill rather than his competitiveness. Inside of him beats the heart of an umistakably righteous and powerful man.
Kung Lao is the last known descendant of the Great Kung Lao, a former Champion of Mortal Kombat, who lost the title to Goro 500 years previous. Unlike his ancestor though, Kung Lao holds no desire to be the Champion of Mortal Kombat and would prefer to live a life of peace. Like his best friend, Liu Kang, Kung Lao is also a member of the White Lotus Society.
When the Shaolin Temples were attacked by Baraka and his Tarkatan soldiers, Liu Kang resolved to travel through the portal that brought the Tarkatas to their temple and avenge their fallen Shaolin brothers, goaded every step of the way by Shang Tsung. Although he joined his friend in his furious quest, Kung Lao's ultimate goal was to rebuild the White Lotus Society at the Wu Shi Academy, in order to train a new generation of warriors for the coming ages. He, along with Liu Kang, ventured into Outworld to do battle with Outworld's forces in a new tournament. While Liu Kang fought Shang Tsung, Kung Lao challenged Kintaro to Mortal Kombat, with Kahn's permisssion the two fought with Kung Lao only just defeating Kintaro, however Kung Lao was injured and could not proceed to fight Kahn. Having emerged victorious and learned the true nature of the tournament, the Earth warriors would return to Earthrealm and prepare for the upcoming invasion.
When Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm came, he had to temporarily scrap his plans for reforming the Society. Kung Lao challenged the emperor, but was brutally beaten to near death. This enraged Liu Kang as he succeeded in defeating Shao Kahn for the second time. With Outworld driven back, Kung Lao decided not to return to the Shaolin Temples, instead allowing everyone to believe that he was dead and went on to live a life of peace. Kung Lao would then find the tranquility and atonement he had always wanted. This would not last long however, as he was drawn away from his newfound peace to help fight against Shinnok's forces, when word reached him that Goro, the Shokan warrior who had defeated the Great Kung Lao centuries ago, was still alive. Confronting the giant, Kung Lao lashed out with a ceremonial strike of revenge in honor of his long-lost ancestor that left Goro's chest scarred. Considering the score settled, the two shook hands.
The next years were peaceful. This ended on a brutal note at the time of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, when the sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung united and murdered Liu Kang in a vicious attack (Tsung posing as Kung Lao to get close to the champion). Kung Lao found the body of his longtime friend, and was told immediately by Raiden that Tsung was the assassin, who had formed the Deadly Alliance with Quan Chi. Enraged, Kung Lao vowed revenge upon the sorcerer, and once again abandoned his pacifist Shaolin beliefs. He knew his current skills were insuffcient to defeat Shang Tsung so after meeting with the other Earthrealm warriors and travelling to Outworld, Kung Lao sought the advice of the martial arts teacher Bo' Rai Cho. Bo' Rai Cho trained Kung Lao for a short time, teaching him the 'whirlwind kick' maneuver. Together, they joined the other warriors in the assault against the two sorcerers. Kung Lao would not rest until Liu Kang was avenged, and Tsung had paid with his life.
But the assault did not end well. Along with Sonya, Jax, Johnny Cage, and Kitana, Kung Lao was defeated in the assault against the deadily Alliance. Despite an improved performance, he still lost to Shang Tsung in one on one combat. After the Alliance was destroyed by Raiden's self-sacrifice, he was resurrected with the other heroes in Mortal Kombat: Deception under the control of Onaga, the Dragon King.

MORTAL KOMBAT DECEPTION
Li Mei was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance as a variant of a well-known archetype in most fighting games: she is a girl/young woman fighting against a supreme crime organization or overlord who did her wrong and fights at impossible odds. She is something of a tragic hero.
Li Mei's village that was forced into slavery to help construct Shang Tsung's palace around the soulnado, which had been a long-time legend of her people. In attacking Kano, however, she gained the attention of Quan Chi, who promised her freedom if she could win a tournament. Around this time she befriended an old warrior among her enslaved villiagers; the supposed "Champion of the Elder Gods" Shujinko, captured by Kano during his 40 year quest for the Kamidogu. Shujinko offered to train her even though he felt that her chances in the Deadly Alliance's "tournament" were slim. She later journeyed to a nearby forest were she was attacked by Moloch and Drahmin. She escaped through the trees as Shang Tsung came and formed an alliance with the Oni.
In Mortal Kombat: Deception, Li Mei returned (most of the newly-introduced fighters did not). Though her ending in Deadly Alliance depicted her winning Quan Chi's tournament, and "winning" the right to be imprisoned forever in one of the Dragon King's soldiers' bodies, Deception had Bo' Rai Cho rescuing her from this fate. However, he was apparently only partially successful, and Li Mei took on some of the aspects of one of these ancient warriors. As such, she is far more battle-oriented in this game, wearing armor, for example.

MORTAL KOMBAT DECEPTION
Liu Kang is a stereotypical character in fighting games, a fusion of both Eastern and Western traditions in martial arts movies. Although in name a Shaolin fighting monk, his style and manners are more westernised. He moves quickly and possesses formidable fighting skills. Liu Kang is one of the best warriors of earthrealm and has beaten many to prove his valor. Throughout the series, Liu Kang has been gradually portrayed as the main hero, becoming Champion after the first Mortal Kombat tournament and then follow whatever quest Raiden has in mind for him. His romantic interest is princess Kitana, but he is unable to commit himself to a relationship due to him being a Shaolin monk.
In a shocking move that altered the course of the Mortal Kombat series, Liu Kang was brutally murdered by Shang Tsung (who had Quan Chi's assistance) in the prelude of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, his soul consumed by Tsung. He did return in Mortal Kombat: Deception, albeit as an undead corpse. He also co-stars alongside Kung Lao, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and others in his latest adventure game: Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, and will return again in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
Liu Kang follows the teachings of the shaolin White Lotus Society and was sent by the Temple of Light to defeat Shang Tsung. He desired to defeat Shang Tsung and bring the tournament back to its Shaolin owners. Liu Kang was trained by Master Bo' Rai Cho, who taught him the Flying Kick. As he made his way to the tournament, he met and became friends with Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. At the time of Liu Kang's entry, Outworld had won nine Mortal Kombat tournaments in a row. Eventually, Liu Kang earned the right to challenge Goro to Mortal Kombat. By exploiting the Shokan's overconfidence, Liu Kang defeated Goro and became the new Champion of Mortal Kombat. Upon hearing of Goro's defeat, Shang Tsung challenged Liu Kang. After an epic battle, Liu Kang defeated Shang Tsung with his Flying Kick, emerging as the new champion of Mortal Kombat.
Coming home from Tsung's Island, he found many of his Shaolin killed in a vicious attack by a Tarkatan horde. Enraged, Liu Kang decided to travel to Outworld by himself, backed by his friend Johnny Cage and fellow White Lotus member and spiritual brother Kung Lao, to seek revenge. At the Outworld tournament he met Kitana, and began to fall in love with her. He learned the true nature of the Outworld tournament but competed anyway. While it is unclear as to what matches took place, it is known that Liu Kang fought Shao Kahn himself, eventually overpowering the emperor. (It is also likely that before facing Kahn, Liu Kang had a rematch with Shang Tsung in front of Kahn himself. Despite having his youth back Shang Tsung was defeated by Liu Kang after a long brutal fight between the pair.) Near defeat, Kahn ordered his forces to destroy the earth fighters, forcing Earth's heroes to return home and to begin preparing for the coming invasion.
After returning to Earthrealm, Liu Kang along with Kung Lao, began training a new generation of Shaolin Warriors, but was interrupted when the invasion began. As Kahn's extermination squads were sent to kill Earth's chosen warriors, Liu Kang found himself the primary target. Kung Lao who went against Shao Kahn was nearly beaten to death. Enraged, Liu Kang challenged the Emperor to Mortal Kombat, and after the epic final battle, he defeated Shao Kahn causing him and his forces to retreat back to Outworld. The souls that Khan had trapped were set free and, just before the portal closed, Liu Kang was thanked by Kitana for his part in saving both Earth and her realm from Shao Kahn.
Liu Kang traveled to America to look for a new generation of Shaolin warriors to train. While there in America, he met his old friend Kai. The two then travelled back to China, where Liu Kang trained Kai to be a Shaolin Warrior. However, the peace was not to last, as the fallen Elder God Shinnok had escaped from the Netherrealm through a portal to Edenia. Upon learning that Kitana had been captured, Liu Kang set out on his own to save her, but he was unsuccessful. Liu Kang returned to Earth, where he began gathering Earth's warriors to save Earth and assist his mentor, Raiden.
Eventually, the battle with Shinnok came, and once the ninja specter Scorpion trapped the sorcerer Quan Chi in the Netherrealm, Shinnok's source of power (his amulet) was cut off, allowing Liu Kang to defeat him. Liu Kang returned to the Shaolin Temples. But the cost was high: he had lost Kitana forever. However, the Edenian Princess appeared through a portal from Edenia and thanked Liu Kang for all he had done. She offered him a chance to join her at the throne of Edenia. However, due to the responsiblities as a Mortal Kombat Champion, Liu Kang was forced to decline her offer.
For some years, Liu Kang went on to enjoy relative peace. However, the Deadly Alliance would make itself known on Earth by its successful assassination attempt of Liu Kang. Shang Tsung posed as Kung Lao and snuck up on the champion as he was practicing his katas. Shang Tsung's helped by the assistance of Quan Chi, who caught Liu Kang in the back unawares with a projectile. Shang Tsung used this distraction to gain the upper hand and snapped Liu Kang's neck. He then consumed his soul. Liu Kang's mutilated body was discovered by his friend Kung Lao, and he was laid to rest at the Wu Shi Academy, where a shrine was built to honor him.
Almost immediately after however, some unknown force reanimated Liu Kang's body and set it on a rampage, slaughtering many of Liu Kang's fellow Shaolin monks. Liu Kang's soul was trapped within Shang Tsung, who was in Outworld. In the culmination of the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Raiden released his godlike essence in order to destroy Onaga, presumably killing both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung in the process. While it is unknown whether or not Quan Chi and Shang Tsung are truly dead, it has been established that the thousands of souls that Tsung consumed in the past were released, including that of Liu Kang. Liu Kang's spirit decided to stay in Outworld to assist in the war against Onaga, but he soon discovered his body's "resurrection" and was stricken by what he had done. Although Liu Kang wasn't technically responsible, he couldn't help but feel responsibility for the actions committed by his corporeal form. He also learned about his comrades and how they had been enslaved by Onaga. From there, Liu Kang enlisted the mysterious ninja Ermac as an ally and had two missions to complete. The first was to try and save his friends from Onaga with Ermac, the second to defeat and stop his body from doing further harm.

MORTAL KOMBAT DEADLY ALLIANCE
Mavado is unmistakably evil. In many respects, he embodies the underworld antipode of the equally evil Kano. Mavado relies on discipline and superior intelligence to fight, whereas Kano seems to rely mainly on scare tactics and brute force. Even in their appearance, they could not be more different. Mavado is a leading figure within the Red Dragon, an ancient criminal organization whose existence is known only to its members, and whose most prominent rivals are the Black Dragon, an offshoot of the Red Dragon which was led by Kano, but is now reformed under the leadership of Kabal. Mavado is a vicious, pitiless and cruel crime lord. Due to his name, Mavado may be from Central or South America.
Mavado begins his journey in the Mortal Kombat series covertly. Since the Red Dragon's top priority is the extermination of the Black Dragon, and the Red Dragon desired to keep their existence secret, the Special Forces proved to be a useful tool to do the job for them. To that end, Mavado's instructed his subordinate, Hsu Hao, to infiltrate the Outer World Investigation Agency and help them in tracking down and killing the last members of the Black Dragon, a mission Hsu Hao performed to great success.
Years after the events of Mortal Kombat Gold, with Jarek seemingly killed by Sonya Blade, and Kabal presumably killed by Mavado himself (the latter's trademark hookswords being taken as trophies in the process), Hsu Hao's task was deemed over. However, Mavado was then contacted by the Deadly Alliance. Both sorcerers saw in the Red Dragon a great potential ally for their eventual domination of Earthrealm. Mavado was hired to fend off Kenshi, in return acquiring the opportunity to battle with Kano, at the time a general in the service of the Alliance. Mavado then instructed Hsu Hao to destroy the Outer World Investigation Agency's underground portal facility, shortly before travelling to Outworld himself.
During the events of Deadly Alliance, Mavado complied: he defeated Kenshi however it is still unknown whether or not Mavado and Kano battled each other yet. Like his overlords Quan Chi and Shang Tsung, however, he had little time to revel in his victory. Shortly before Mortal Kombat: Deception, Kabal returned fully recuperated from his stay in Chaosrealm, and seemingly killed Mavado to reform the Black Dragon, reclaiming his hookswords in the process. Nevertheless, Mavado is scheduled to return in the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, though it remains to be seen whether he survived or not.
In MK Deception during Shujinko's "Quest" Mavado was looking for an assassin (which was going to be Hsu Hao) to work for the Red Dragon clan in Edenia.

MORTAL KOMBAT 4 and MORTAL KOMBAT Armogiddon
Meat is the name given to a character introduced only in Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat Gold. The name was given after fans saw the text "Meat lives" on Ed Boon's website promoting Mortal Kombat 4's 3rd revision.[1] To this day, his existence as a true character or a joke character is still debated heavily amongst fans. Some believe he wasn't even a character, as he was really nothing more than an alternate costume for all other fighters, and had no storyline. Still others believe the opposite, citing the fact that many Mortal Kombat characters in the past, such as Reptile, Noob Saibot, Smoke, and Jade, started with no original moves or storylines in their first appearances either, and Meat is no different.
Regardless of his place in canon, to access Meat, the player had to defeat all challengers in Group Mode, which would have to include every single character. After that, any selected character became Meat. The character Meat resembled a bloody skeleton, but its move set took after whatever character was selected. The template design for Meat was taken from many fatalities that render a character a bloody skeleton. This template has been used in many Mortal Kombat games.
Fans who believe Meat to be canon cite that in the game Mortal Kombat: Deception, Meat makes a short appearance in Konquest mode. Shujinko finds him standing in a small cave in the Netherealm. If the player talks to him, he will reward them with some koins and then flee. Also, in Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, enemies called "bloody skeletons" appear in the Netherrealm and the Dead Pool, and are similar in appearance to Meat. Some believe that this would further suggest he may have a canon role in the games after all, but still others remain unconvinced, and thus far, no statement has been made by the creators as to whether Meat does or does not have an official place within MK canon, but many believe that his upcoming appearance in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will finally put the debate to rest one way or the other.
Recently, the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine has confirmed in an article about MK:Armageddon that Meat is a playable character. Promotional artwork recently released by Midway confirms this. A tentative select screen picture shows that one eye is hanging out of its socket. He also has some muscles in an updated character wallpaper.

Mileena is a clone of Kitana, created by Shang Tsung's sorcery for Shao Kahn, using Tarkatan physiology. Vicious and evil, she despises Kitana, and feels that it is her own right to rule Edenia as Princess in her place. Her fondest wish is to kill her "sister", and claim her existence for her own. Something of an opportunist, she will make use of any chance to seize power that comes within her grasp.
Kahn then ordered his sorcerer Shang Tsung to create an evil, vicious, and loyal clone of Kitana who would take her place. Tsung combined Kitana's essence with a Tarkatan's to achieve this purpose. However, something went wrong with the clone's creation and her face deformed into a hideous Tarkatan's mouth. Rather than disposing of her, she was given the name Mileena and introduced as Kitana's twin sister. Instead of replacing Kitana as originally planned, Mileena would be used to watch Kitana and make sure she remained loyal to Kahn.
Kitana and Mileena grew up together as Shao Kahn's personal assassins, even though Mileena secretly harbored a growing bitterness and jealousy towards her "twin", who Kahn favored over others. Also at some time during her life, Mileena became the secret ally and possible lover of a Tarkatan warrior named Baraka. As Kahn feared, Kitana did finally discover the truth about her past and family. Although she continued to feign loyalty to Shao Kahn, she secretly plotted and waited for the right time to overthrow him.
During Mortal Kombat II, Shao Kahn began to grow suspicious of Kitana and Mileena was ordered to watch over her sister. After finding out Kitana was indeed conspiring with the Earthrealm warriors, Mileena attacked Kitana, but Kitana proved to be the superior fighter and killed her. Mileena's essence descended into Netherealm (Mortal Kombat's hell), giving her even more reason to hate her sister.
Damned to the Netherealm, Mileena found herself recruited by the fallen Elder God Shinnok. During Mortal Kombat Trilogy, she was resurrected by Shinnok and sent to Earth to spy for him during Shao Kahn's invasion. She was also granted the ability to read Kitana's thoughts. After Kahn was defeated, Mileena was summoned back to the Netherealm with Noob Saibot, who was also sent to spy on Shao Kahn.
During Mortal Kombat Gold, Mileena assisted in Shinnok's invasion of Edenia. Seeing this as a chance to finally prove she is superior to Kitana, Mileena allowed her sister to escape Shinnok's dungeons. However, Mileena would again be denied. After Shinnok's defeat, she was again bested by Kitana and secretly locked away in an Edenian prison, perhaps in the hope that she would one day reform.
Mileena remained imprisoned for many years, until the Dragon King, Onaga, returned and began his own invasion of Edenia. Mileena was freed from her prison by Baraka. She joined Onaga, and was ordered to pose as Kitana in order to mislead the princess' armies while Onaga gathered his strength. Mileena accepted, seeing this as a chance to gain some amount of revenge against Kitana. However, as Mileena began her deception, she also began to consider taking control of the armies for herself.

The three-eyed Moloch is a massive, lumbering Oni who had originally come from the Netherrealm and made his debut in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. He is a non-playable character (excluding third-party devices) carrying a massive orb and chain with it. He has typical miniboss abilities such as great strength, devastating moves and a few weak spots to exploit for the typically more nimble but weaker opponent. Moloch would be the sub-boss before both Shang Tsung and Quan Chi.
Moloch is the only known ally of his Oni counterpart, Drahmin. Unlike Drahmin however, distorted and consumed by rage as he may be, Moloch has most likely always been a demon from the Netherrealm. After being accidentally set free by Quan Chi in the events leading up to the Deadly Alliance game, they attacked the cyborg Cyrax but were forced to flee from his bombs. Eventually, they took refuge in a forest and fed on those who wandered too close too its borders. Li Mei came too close to the forest, but escaped through the trees. After they were enlisted by Shang Tsung and held in the basement of his palace as an insurance policy, should Quan Chi turn on him. Eventually, Moloch and Drahmin were set free, but instead of confronting Quan Chi, they ironically protected him by defeating Scorpion and hurling him into the soulnado. Moloch's whereabouts since then are unknown, but he will return as a playable character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat:

Motaro made his first appearance in Mortal Kombat 3. He is a Centaur, meaning that he has the body of a stallion and the torso of a man. He as well sports a pair of capricorn-like horns and has a long, metallic rat-like tail he can use as both an energy channeling point and a limb. Centaurs are known for their hunting prowess and their mystical powers.
Motaro, along with his entire race, harbors a deep-seated hatred for the Shokan, whom he sees as inferior. The two races constantly struggle against each other in order to prove their value to Shao Kahn and to finally define which is superior.
Sonya Blade's defeat of Kano during the events of Mortal Kombat Trilogy had resulted in the Black Dragon member being thrown from a skyscraper to the streets below. Motaro recovered the severely injured Kano, and brought him back to Shao Kahn's fortress. After reviving him with magic, Motaro then imprisoned the criminal so that he could later be punished by Kahn for failing to defeat Sonya. It is at this point that Motaro was assaulted and killed by Sheeva.

Nightwolf was the first Native American character in Mortal Kombat and was introduced in Mortal Kombat 3. Although introduced as a historian and a shaman, he does not live in the past. He is a proud and fierce warrior dedicated to the cause of good, and is in contact with Raiden through visions. As such, he draws both on internal and external spiritual energy to enhance his strength in kombat. Although his patch of tribal land provided a vital shelter territory for the Earthrealm warriors at the time of Shao Kahn's invasion, it seems Nightwolf prefers solitary work to companionship.
Nightwolf had been warned of the coming invasion of Earthrealm by a vision from Raiden. As such, he was fully aware and prepared for the events as they occurred, including the attacks of Kahn's extermination squads. His own homeland protected through shamanic magic, he would soon be joined by the other chosen warriors. Together, they then travelled back to the East Coast, prepared for battle against the Emperor and his minions, and won.
Nightwolf made his return during the events of Mortal Kombat: Deception. In the events leading to Deception, Nightwolf viewed images of the Dragon King and his resurrection in his dreams. These nightmares recurred constantly, and Nightwolf came to recognize them as a warning. He knew that a new evil threat was about to arise from the ashes, and in lieu of Reptile's transformation into Onaga, his predictions most assuredly came true.
The method that Nightwolf would use to destroy Onaga was one passed down to him by his forefathers. This method was that of the "Sin Eater", which involved absorbing the sins of his tribe. However there was a terrible consequence to be considered in taking on such a role. If he were to do this, he would be a danger to all that surrounded him, including his allies. Hence, he made the decision to destroy Onaga on his own, keeping his allies out of harm's way. His role as a Sin Eater would involve entering the Netherealm, drawing Onaga's soul to him, and releasing the absorbed sins of his ancestors, which would bind Onaga to the spot.

The winged Nitara is a vampiress who, much like Shang Tsung, has to prey on the life of others in order to remain alive, save that she requires blood rather than souls. Rather than being evil, however, Nitara is depicted as being rather self-serving and morally neutral. She has a distinctly gothic appearance, and has long been on a quest to separate her own realm from Outworld.
Nitara spent a very long time trying to find a mysterious orb that bound her realm to Outworld before actually discovering its location. The orb, however, was inaccessible to her, submerged under molten lava. Fortunately for her, at one point she had spotted the Outer World Investigation Agency agent Cyrax travelling across Outworld. With his cybernetic body, he would be able to descend into the lava and come back with the orb, unharmed.
But she realized she would need to offer the cyborg something in exchange for his services. Seeing Reptile as an easily exploitable fool, she presented him with a Kirehashi blade, an artifact of Reptile's Zaterran realm, and revealed to him the location of Kitana's military encampment. After Reptile discovered the dead body of Shao Kahn he offered his services to Nitara, grateful for her apparent kindness. He pledged to serve her, and she commanded him to attack Cyrax, describing him as an Earthrealm invader, and explaining he could be weakened by destroying his arm console, which Nitara was aware the cyborg used to travel between realms.
Reptile did as instructed, and fled after being frightened away by one of Cyrax's attacks. Nitara introduced herself to Cyrax immediately after, and made her proposal: Having the ability to traverse realms through the powers of her gemstone, she would send him home, under the condition that he retrieve the orb for her. Although hesitant to trust her, Cyrax accepted, having little choice. The two journeyed to the orb's location, Onaga's incubation chamber. There, both parties held up their end of the bargain: Cyrax descended into the lava and retrieved the orb, and Nitara sent the cyborg home. With the orb in her hands, her plans had come to a successful conclusion. She then smashed it into pieces on the floor, separating her realm from Outworld at last. The ordeal knocked her unconscious, but when she awoke, she was home.

Like his name, clothes, and powers suggested, his character was icy and distant. In all aspects, he was a cold-blooded killer with an utmost dedication to the principles of his clan, and to whomever had paid him to kill. Although essentially neutral, his soul possesses an evil taint brought about by his years as a remorseless killer.
It is unclear how the family line of Sub-Zero came to be part of the Lin Kuei clan, though it is speculated that their family had been a part of the clan for at least several generations.
It is known that the father of both brothers (the fourth man to be known as Sub-Zero in his lineage) was a secret operative for the clan in the United States. He married an American woman and together they had two sons and a daughter. Against the will of their mother, the father took the sons with him to move back to China at a certain time, and as such both brothers became warriors of the Lin Kuei. The mother and the daughter remained in the U.S.
He made his first chronological appearance in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero when the sorcerer Quan Chi hired the Lin Kuei to find an ancient amulet, and he was sent to find the map leading to its location. He did not know that Quan Chi had hired a Japanese ninja, Hanzo Hasashi, for the same task in case Sub-Zero failed. Hasashi and Sub-Zero encountered each other in the map room, where Sub-Zero killed Hasashi in cold blood. After Sub-Zero delivered the map, Quan Chi made good on a promise to the Lin Kuei Grandmaster; the rival clan of the Shirai Ryu were wiped out. This slaughter, combined with Sub-Zero's merciless execution of Hanzo, fueled the vengeful spectre form of Scorpion who would later participate in the Mortal Kombat tournaments.
After Sub-Zero delivered the amulet to Shinnok and Quan Chi, he was sent back to retrieve it by Earthrealm's protector, Raiden, who explained to him that the amulet was the key to releasing Shinnok. Sub-Zero stole the amulet from Shinnok and escaped the Netherealm, refusing an offer from Quan Chi to join the Brotherhood of the Shadow and worship Shinnok. Whilst in the Netherealm, he was warned by Quan Chi that he was able to enter the Netherealm only because his soul had been tainted with evil; apparently troubled by this, Sub-Zero asked Raiden if it were true. Raiden confirmed Sub-Zero's fears, but informed him that only he could alter his own destiny.
In the Netherealm, Saibot would become a member of the Brotherhood of the Shadow, the very thing he had resisted becoming whilst alive. In a darkly ironic twist, Noob Saibot would now pledge allegiance and loyalty to Shinnok. One of his first tasks for his new lord would be to observe and report on the events taking place on Earthrealm and Outworld; to this end, he remained in the shadows during the Outworld tournament, faithfully monitoring the situation for the fallen Elder God.
At Shinnok's behest, Saibot aligned himself with Outworld's emperor Shao Kahn during Kahn's invasion of Earth. However, as the tables turned in favor of the Earthrealm warriors, Noob Saibot was ordered to switch allegiances and join the Earthrealm warriors, unknown to Kahn. After Kahn was defeated, Shinnok, sensing his time had come, was freed from the Netherealm by Quan Chi, and conquered Edenia. Noob Saibot now served his overlord directly. But despite the Elder God's careful planning, Shinnok was once again defeated by Raiden's forces and the Brotherhood of the Shadow was disbanded. With Shinnok defeated utterly- Noob Saibot later refers to him as simply "gone"- Saibot returned to the service of the still-weakened Shao Kahn.
With Kahn having been thought slain at the hands of the Deadly Alliance, and Shinnok vanquished, Saibot slowly changed from a pawn into a player. Free to pursue his own interests, and uninterested in the affairs concerning the rise of Onaga, he plotted to create his own legion of assassins. While searching Kahn's abandoned fortress, he discovered the inert body of Smoke. Reprogramming the cyborg to remain loyal to him, he reactivated his nanotechnology, and formed plans to create an army of cyber-demons, using Smoke as a template (see Noob-Smoke).
Also let it be known, that Smoke (in his human form) was once a member of the Lin Kuei as well. And this may be an obvious reason for his attachment to Robot Smoke.

Onaga was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance under the cryptic name of the "Dragon King", the long-dead ruler of Outworld, even before Shao Kahn. Not much was known about him, save for the fact that his army was deemed undefeatable but, at his untimely death, allowed itself to be mummified and kept in a tomb that was not uncovered until the necromancer Quan Chi stumbled upon it. Onaga is one of the series' characters through which the One Being is rumored to work. His most important powers include superhuman strength and resistance to all forms of magic, and the innate power to raise the dead.
Millennia ago, Onaga, also known as the Dragon King, was a ruler of Outworld. Seeking eternal life he ordered the last known dragon egg to be kept hidden and guarded hoping the blood of an infant dragon would grant him immortality. However, he died before this could be fulfilled. Shao Kahn, one of his chief advisors, had him poisoned and took over his rule of Outworld. As a result Onaga's army (considered undefeatable because Onaga possessed the innate power to raise the dead) was cast into a mummified state. During the years that followed, Onaga was apparently forgotten.
Quite some time before Liu Kang's victory over Goro and Shang Tsung at the Shaolin Mortal Kombat tournament, Onaga communicated through death to Shujinko through an avatar named Damashi. He persuaded Shujinko to embark on a quest to unite the Kamidogu, claiming he was carrying out the will of the Elder Gods, as well as granting him the power to learn the fighting techniques of any warrior he encountered and faced in battle. Shujinko readily embarked on his quest, beginning to set in motion events that Onaga hoped would lead to his eventual return to power. As well, a sect of holy men still dedicated to him had been guarding the egg of the last great dragon in a chamber of molten lava. During the events of Mortal Kombat II, they captured the Outworld elemental Blaze, who was forced to guard the egg until it was ready to hatch and revive the king.
Just as the army stood ready to receive commands from Quan Chi, who had emerged victorious in a battle with his former ally Shang Tsung, Onaga returned. Even the combined might of Shang Tsung, Quan Chi and Raiden was not sufficient to defeat him. Raiden's desperate last measure was to use a self-destruct magic that released his godly essence, but that only succeeded in destroying Onaga's army and, presumably, the two sorcerers. Onaga was unaffected and was now in possession of the amulet Quan Chi previously held.
It was at this time in which Shujinko, finally realizing he had been duped, took action. He traveled through the realms in order to find recruits to fight Onaga. All of these warriors came from extremely diverse origins but Shujinko planned to unite them to fight this enormous threat, who was now in possession of the six Kamidogu (found in the Temple background) and attempting to unite all of them into one.

MORTAL KOMBAT 4
MORTAL KOMBAT DEADLY ALLIANCE
Originally a demon, Quan Chi became the most powerful sorcerer and necromancer in the Netherealm. Quan Chi combines both cunning and brute force in his neverending ploys to overtake not only Earthrealm, but all of reality. He is an opportunist and will ally himself with anyone who can help him further his own goals. He is notable in particular for his ruthlessness and pragmatism.
Details of Quan Chi's past are unknown, except that he was once an Oni from the Netherrealm, who transformed when he learned sorcery. He became a free roaming sorcerer, with the ability to traverse the realms at will. While in the Netherealm, he came upon Shinnok, who was under torment from the realm's then-ruler, Lucifer. In exchange for power, and a place at Shinnok's side, he assisted the fallen Elder God in overthrowing his tormentor and helping him ascend to become the new ruler of the Netherealm. Their victory achieved, Shinnok honored his word and imbued Quan Chi with incredible power, making him arch-sorcerer of the Netherealm.
When Shang Tsung took possession of the Great Kung Lao's soul after his defeat at the hands of Goro, he learned the location of Shinnok's long lost amulet. Tsung traded this information with Quan Chi. In return, Quan Chi would help to revive Sindel and enable Shao Kahn to take control of Earthrealm at a later date. Although Shao Kahn's invasion failed, it gave Quan Chi the opportunity to make his move.
Before the last Mortal Kombat tournament, the sorcerer proposed a deal with the Lin Kuei - he would destroy their rival clan, the Shirai Ryu, in exchange for the assistance of one of their warriors. Quan Chi convinced the elder Sub-Zero to retrieve the amulet for him. Sub-Zero did so (and killed Hanzo Hasashi in cold blood in doing so), unaware of Quan Chi's motives. Once the Lin Kuei warrior acquired the amulet, Quan Chi claimed it, and explained its origins before leaving to give the amulet back to Shinnok. Unknown to the fallen Elder God however, Quan Chi had replaced the amulet with a useless imitation, and kept the real one for himself. Shortly afterwards, Sub-Zero, who had been ordred to reclaim the amulet by Raiden, confronted Quan Chi, and defeated him temporarily, with assistance from Sareena. Quan Chi would spend the following years assisting Shinnok in preparation for his forthcoming assault, as well heading the cult of the Brotherhood of the Shadow.
In the Netherealm, Quan Chi was tortured by Scorpion until the Oni Drahmin and Moloch found them. The Oni protected Quan Chi from Scorpion, and in return, Quan Chi promised to bring them back with him when he eventually escaped the Netherealm. Upon discovering a portal that led to Outworld, he fled without them, leaving them determined to destroy him. The portal led Quan Chi to the tomb containing the mummified remains of the long forgotten Dragon King. Reading the writings on the king's sarcophagus, Quan Chi realized that the army was invincible, and could be revived. With an idea in mind of the individual who could assist him in his aims, he journeyed to Shang Tsung's palace.
The sorcerer was still not be safe from Scorpion, however. The specter had pursued him into Outworld, and they fought, gaining the attention of Shang Tsung. Dispatching Scorpion temporarily, and impressing Tsung, Quan Chi described his plan to his fellow sorcerer; Quan Chi would open a "soulnado" to the heavens, providing Tsung with infinite souls, and Tsung would help him revive the army of the Dragon King. Together, they would embark with determination to achieve absolute domination of all realms, forming the Deadly Alliance.
But before they could enact their plans, they had to eliminate the only two people who could oppose them. They began with the current ruler of Outworld, Shao Kahn, still weakened from his failed invasion of Earthrealm, and waging a war against joint Edenian-Shokan forces. Tsung introduced Quan Chi to Kahn, and they pledged their loyalty in a false show. They then quickly sprang their attack, killing Kahn (in actuality, a clone, although they had no way of knowing this). Kano, Kahn's acting general who had witnessed the murder, pledged his own support to them. Soon after, using a portal known only to sorcerors and deities, they then headed to Earthrealm's Wu Shi Academy, where the Mortal Kombat champion Liu Kang was practicing a kata. Under the guise of Kung Lao, Tsung snuck up on, and battled Kang. Quan Chi attacked Kang from behind with a skull fireball attack, taking him completely unawares and weakening him. Tsung took the opportunity to break his old adversary's neck and consume his soul.
Returning to Outworld, the Deadly Alliance commanded Kano's troops to force a small Outworld village to construct a new palace around the tomb to house the Soulnado. When one of the citizens, Li Mei, attacked Kano, they offered to free her village if she could win a tournament they would hold. About the same time, they approached Mavado, offering him a deal as well; he could earn the right to fight and kill Kano, in exchange for eliminating Kenshi, an old enemy of Tsung's who had recently been spying on him.
Their attack was in vain. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung struck down Kung Lao, Sonya, Jax, Johnny Cage, and Kitana. Only Raiden remained, and the Alliance confronted him together before the soulnado. They defeated him, but their victory was short-lived. Quan Chi had harbored his own suspicions on Tsung's part, namely that his ally wanted Shinnok's amulet for himself. He was correct.
With all their enemies defeated, they turned on each other. Quan Chi emerged victorious, but could not savor his victory: Onaga, the Dragon King, newly reborn, entered the chamber. Tsung awakened, as did Raiden, and together, the three attempted to stop him. In desperation, Raiden released his essence in a blast that destroyed everything in the vicinity, but Onaga alone arose from the ruins, unharmed.

MORTAL KOMBAT DEADLY ALLIANCE
MORTAL KOMBAT DECEPTION
Raiden is the eternal God of Thunder and former protector of Earthrealm. After the second defeat of Shinnok, he ascended to the status of Elder God. Being a god, he possesses many supernatural abilities, such as the ability to teleport, control lightning and fly. As a god, he is used to thinking in terms of eternity rather than normal human lifespans, and as such he has a radically different outlook on life.
When Earthrealm was young, Raiden was its protector. He fought the rogue Elder God Shinnok, who wished to rule it, in a war that threatened to destroy Earthrealm itself. One of the casualties of the war was the Saurian civilization (of which Reptile was a member), forcing the remaining survivors to emigrate to another world, which they named Zaterra.
With the aid of the Elder gods, Raiden managed to defeat Shinnok. Stripping him of the amulet, he banished the evil Elder to the Netherealm, and placed his powerful amulet in a secret location- a Temple of the Elements he constructed in the mountains of Nepal. He assigned four gods to guard the amulet- the gods of Wind (Fujin), Fire, Earth and Water.
When the elder Sub-Zero stole Shinnok's amulet for Quan Chi millions of years later, Raiden appeared before the Lin Kuei warrior, and told him to enter the Netherealm and steal it back, lest Shinnok use it to free himself. Raiden was unable to do it himself, as he would lose all of his powers in the Netherealm. Sub-Zero did as requested, for the time being, removing Shinnok as a threat.
Some time later, Shang Tsung invited many of earthrealm warriors to participate in Mortal Kombat on his island. Aware of the threat posed by this tournament to the future of Earth, Raiden took the form of a human to compete in it as well.
One year later, Raiden found that he had no choice but to accept Shang Tsung's offer of Mortal Kombat in Outworld. Knowing full well the treachery of Shang Tsung and brutality of Shao Kahn, he warned the surviving members of the Shaolin tournament and disappeared alone to the Outworld.
After the Earthrealm warriors' victory, Raiden had to scramble to protect his warriors' souls when Shao Kahn reached across the realms and reclaimed his resurrected Queen Sindel. With the safety of his champions ensured, Raiden wished to fight alongside them, but was unable to due to the merger between Earth and Outworld. The Outworld menace now ruled the Earth, and Raiden had no choice but to give up his godhood in order to fight. Following Liu Kang's defeat of Shao Kahn, he reclaimed his status as both a god and Earth's protector.
As an Elder God, Raiden could not interfere when Shang Tsung and Quan Chi killed Liu Kang many years later. Disgusted at his peers for their refusal to intervene, he renounced his position as an Elder, gathering his warriors to stop the Deadly Alliance. This time, disaster struck the heroes. The Earthrealm warriors were all slain in battle with the Tarkatan horde and in a desperate measure, he confronted Shang Tsung and Quan Chi in front of the Soulnado, but was defeated.
He returned to his feet when Onaga, the Dragon King, entered the chamber, and stood beside Tsung and Quan Chi as they attacked Onaga. When he saw that their attacks barely slowed Onaga down, Raiden released his godly essence, the effect of which was a single, massive explosion. It obliterated the Dragon King's tomb, snuffed out the Soulnado, apparently destroyed the Deadly Alliance and Raiden himself, but did not harm Onaga. Raiden's essence soon gathered again in the Earthrealm, where he had now became furious with the way Earthrealm's inhabitants had treated their own realm. He became even more enraged when he learned that Shujinko had foolishly unleashed the Dragon King by attaining the Kamidogu of various realms for him. With that, his patience exhausted, Raiden then decided he was going to punish those who placed Earthrealm in harm's way.
