Hello, welcome to my blog where I update my artwork for my second year at University. It's been a very busy and hectic year ... it hasn't been the smoothest; there were a lot of changes with the project I was involved with, but needless to say, it's totally been worth it.

![]() Some shots from different angles in the living room to be included in the film. Overall, the film has been a success, despite the many hurdles. Personally, I think we should have been allowed to choose our own groups and work with people with similar interests and skill-sets. We should have had more freedom to decide what we wanted to do ... doing a piece about World War 2 would not have been my first choice. At the start of the year I was highly interested in 3D and the lighting effects in Maya. I wish I had been put in a group that focussed on 3D rather than VERY traditional 2D. A whole year spent learning how to enhance my skills in a program such as Maya would have been highly beneficial but I suppose there is always time to learn these things in your own time. ![]() 25/3/2011 LIVING ROOM 2
![]() Second part of the living room. Focusing more on soft, orangey tones emanating from the lights. I offered to animate the lights glowing softly in the room, but the group decided the image on it's own would suffice. During the film, the camera pans across the room to indicate the presence of the study. Some aspects of the room had to be changed such as the chair ... in some shots of the film the chair has had to be changed due to the character's body movements. My biggest niggle is the that the perspective of the room is a bit off but I agree that the style and quality of the work overshadows this

![]() Continuing from being a Layout Designer, here are layout designs of the study, keeping in with the theme of browns/beige and subtle design. Also, playing around with lighting with the moonlight and lamplight. Such affects can be created with a new layer> painted black>Linear Dodge, then using a light colour and faint brush, you get achieve a "GLOW" effect. I achieved this by merely experimenting with photoshop. The next part of the room will be included in the next post. ![]() I'M NOW A LAYOUT DESIGNER ![]() During February the concept of having Zombies as the main idea was strong. It seemed to be supported and approved by everyone, until we were told that the idea of the young boy looking through the window and seeing Zombie soldiers was well ... rather ridiculous and strays completely off the traditional/subtle theme we had right at the start. I however was VERY annoyed because I had spent the good part of a month planning out the character design and learning how to use FLASH to animate the characters with. It felt like we were back to square one. I no longer wished to be the main person doing Character Design as I felt that other members of our group had stronger skills for it. I offered to do the layout and so I designed the outside of the HOUSE. I had already began to start it way back in December but our group decided that the opening shot would be the outside of the house, and the camera would pan through the window and into the living room. I had originally began to paint the house in a very traditional style on photoshop, but with the apparent revamp of having Zombies in our piece, I decided that I should draw the rest of the house with a black outline and simple block colours to keep it with the "cartoony Zombie" theme. However when the idea of the Zombies was scrapped, I still kept the original design but added a lot more detail. The final design can be seen in the Thumbnail above. ![]() 29/1/2011 MORE CHARACTER DESIGN
Here I am exploring more character design for the boy, initially I would have preferred a more traditional-looking character such as this but in regards to the animator, a more simpler character was favourable ![]() 25/1/2011 COMING INTO CHARACTER
![]() January has been a frustrating month because our group seems to be getting nowhere with our ideas. Our group was given the most freedom to expand on ideas, whereas other groups seemed to have a more fixed idea. I believe the former in becoming our downfall. We keep going in circles and repeating the same idea. We spoke to our lecturer about the problem and he suggested that we should include ZOMBIES into our film. Something fresh and new. I must admit, I was very sceptic on the idea first until I realised it would revamp the boring, literally monotone piece we had at the time. I leapt at the idea to design the characters for the Zombies and the THUMBNAILS ABOVE include my first and final ideas for the zombies. I didn't fancy having them appear too "monstrous" or "grotesque"as it 1. be difficult to animate and 2. would be appear mildly disrespectful to the pilots who died in the war. I'm inspired by the "Foster's Home for Imaginary Pets" style as it is simplistic, professional and would be easier to animate with. ![]() 5/1/2011 SKETCHING FOR IDEAS
![]() After Christmas our group had changed somewhat ... 2 of our number had left to pursue their own projects and so we were left to just four of us. Only one person in our group was the strongest animator. Our storyline was still fairly vague and nothing much had changed apart from the chosen roles in the group. I was the compositor to begin with and now I was the character designer because I was the strongest drawer. I also played around with some LAYOUT DESIGNwhich can be viewed in the thumbnails above. They're only sketches starting out at the beginning of the project but they became the foundation of what I focussed my work on in the next few months. ![]() 9/12/2010 STARTING THE PROJECT Our group given the idea for the project today. The theme was based on World War II, and we were given a variety of ideas, such as loss, death, pilots, trenches. The colour scheme would be very monotone, using a pallet of browns and beiges to convey the dark times of the war. I suggested we look into the The Battle of the Somme where a tragic number of men died, but our group wanted to focus more on World War II and the pilots of the war. Using my knowledge of World War II from A Level Drama I suggested we focus on the story of a little boy who loses his dad in the war. Other ideas that were passed around involved a skeleton of a pilot beneath the Brayford in Lincoln. I wasn't too keen, because it seemed to much in the style of Tim Burton and cliched. I am very optimistic about the idea for our group's project this year. Our group appears to have more freedom than the others, and I'm looking forward to showcasing how World War II played it's part in Lincoln, especially the RAF base which is nearby. I would like to include some 3D aspects to the piece on Maya as I believe it could look very realistic. I am also very keen on lighting; subtle lighting would be required in a piece as such as this if it's going to have a colour scheme of browns and beiges. ![]() Owner: Jessica Hits:online ©2008-2009 ~Jessink |
