Other Religious Traditions

        Some of the religions in South Asia include Jainism. Similar to the Buddhism the Jainism grew from the efforts they did to reform Hinduism. Mahavira was the founder  of Jainism. He lived around the time that Buddha lived. And just like Buddha Mahavira rejected the power of the Brahmans. Mahavira taught Hindu ideas that included reincarnation. He also taught the people that they should avoid harming living creatures. Because of these teachings the the Jainists became strict vegetarians.

          Many other religions had a great impact on South Asia. The Muslim invaders  later brought  the Islam religion to the subcontinent and over time it won converts. 

             In the 1500's the  the Sikhism moved to South Asia. The Sikhism includes Hinduism and Islam.  Around the same time the Christian missionaries began to arrive South Asia. and they also won converts of the people in the subcontinental.

 

Powerful  Empires

           The Ramayana is India's graeat epic poem. It declares the need for a strong king.

          " Where the land is kingless, the cloud , lightning-wrenthed and loud-voiced, givies no rain to the earth..Where the land is kingless, the son does not honor his father nor the wife her husband.Where the land is kingless, men do not meet in assemblies, nor make lovelygardens and temples."

 

 

Maurya Empire

        Chandragupta Maurya was the first ruler to unite the northern plain. In 321 B.C. Chandragupta was found the ruling family called dynasty. The Mauryas ruled India for about 140 years.

Government

            Chandragupta Maurya conquered a large empire, which stretched across the northern plain from Bay of Bengal to the Hindu Kush. Chandragupta fot many officials to help him rule the large empire. Among these officials were some tax collectors, which took one quarter of the farmers crops. The herders and merchants paid their taxes with cattle and trade goods.
