The 2003 Season was here, and Jerry Nadeau had a new team to race with. It was a start-up team from MB2 Motorsports, as they expanded from a single car operation with just Johnny Benson to a two car team, adding the #01 US Army Pontiac. Jerry felt that he would have a good shot at running up front, as MB2 had previously shown lots of signs of having fast, competitive cars. Below you will see Jerry's car from the 2003 season.
The 2003 Season started off fairly slow for Jerry, as he really didn't have many good runs, until Texas, where he had a 4th place finish. Two weeks later, at Richmond, that's when everything came to a crashing halt. Below you will see his results for the first 10 races of 2003.
| Race | Starting Pos. | Finish Pos. |
|---|---|---|
| Daytona | 42 | 28 |
| Rockingham | 24 | 26 |
| Las Vegas | 11 | 22 |
| Atlanta | 14 | 31 |
| Darlington | 3 | 35 |
| Bristol | 13 | 28 |
| Texas | 5 | 4 |
| Talladega | 23 | 36 |
| Martinsville | 26 | 41 |
| California | 6 | 14 |
The next week, the Cup Series was at Richmond, for the annual Spring race there. Jerry was running fastest in practice, until he ran through some oil on the track. He ended up wrecking, and crashed into the outside wall, driver side first, in what was registered as the hardest impact ever at Richmond Internation Raceway. Jerry was unconcious in the car after the accident, and was airlifted to a local hospital. From there, he was in an induced coma for over two weeks, and some feared he might not even make it. He was in critical condition in the ICU, and had severe head, neck, brain, and spinal cord injuries. This was just another bad-break for Jerry, and his racing career. The unfortunate part, was this would end his racing career. He hasn't gotten back into a stock car since, and still feels lingering pains to this day from the crash that happened close to 4 years ago. Unfortunatley, Jerry never got to live up to his potential as a "Young Gun" in the NASCAR Winston Cup/Nextel Cup Series due to his horrific crash at RIR in May of 2003. Jerry currently works with driver development on and off, most recently with David Gilliland, helping them as much as he can, but still longs to get back into a car someday and race again. Who knows if he ever will, but if he does, you can bet your money that I'll be at that first race back, regardless of where it is, to cheer him on.
Here you can see a picture of the Rescue Team at RIR lifting Jerry out of his car, and onto a stretcher.
