JAMES R. HERBERT BOONE CHAIR IN HUMANITIES
| Established in 1988 with funds from the estate of James R. Herbert Boone and with support from Edward K. Dunn Jr.
JAMES R. HERBERT BOONE, A&S 1921, left his Baltimore home, the Oak Hill House, and art collection to Hopkins to support the humanities. The University used part of the proceeds of these gifts to endow this professorship. Mr. Boone and his wife, MURIEL HARMAR WURTZ-DUNDAS BOONE, spent much of their married life in Europe where they were granted audiences with the Pope and royalty in England and Italy. Mr. Boone made headlines in the 1930s for funding a lengthy but unsuccessful hunt for sunken treasure off the English coast. He died in 1983. | |
Josephine Harmer Wurts-Dundas (mother to Muriel harmar Wurtz-Dundas) was committed to a sanitorium in NEW YORK: Riverdale Sanitarium (West Hill), W. 252d nr. Broadway. Est'd 1905. Capacity, 20. Private. Phys, Flavius Packer. It is believed she was a resident there until her death from pnuemonia, on January 29th of 1929. I have not been able to locate her exact diagnosis, whilst she was at the facility, as this was a private facility and very little information exists about it, besides an excerpt from an article, in the New York Times regarding another doctor that worked part-time with the "newest" treatments for psychotherapy and shock treatments, at the facility. It is stated that the daughter was also committed to a sanitorium, but I found no information to corraborate this evidence.
