THEY'RE TWINS! TWIIIINS!!!

Yep. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer are twins, no doubt about it! Here's why...

ZE PROOF!

Ok. So why do I say that Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer are twins, not mates?

Let's start with the most obvious reason - how they look. How many cats in CATS look as similar to each other as these two do? Their markings are the same colour, same pattern, everything. Fair enough, many real-life cats of the same breed look very similar even when not related. But in the musical, each cat is given distinctive differences - which I assume is so the audience can tell them apart.

Let's take two more examples of similar coloured cats being brother/sister. The first, Coricopat and Tantomile. While there is a raging debate about whether Mungo and Teazer are mates or twins, for some reason, it is almost universally taken for granted that Coricopat and Tantomile are twins. In fact, they're often nicknamed "the creepy twins" among the fandom! What is the difference that makes Mungo and Teazer be taken for mates, when Coricopat and Tantomile are "obviously" twins?

The other instance of similar markings suggesting relation is that of Bombalurina and Demeter. These two are often written or roleplayed as sisters because of their similar markings, even though these two are quite differently coloured. Would you say that Bomba and Deme were mates because they look the same? No!

Secondly, let's look at their behaviour. Many people say that it proves Mungo and Teazer are mates because they do the Mating Dance (part of the Jellicle Ball) together. I assume these people also agree that the Rum Tum Tugger and Jennyanydots must therefore be mates. And how about Bombalurina and Pouncival? Everyone says Munkustrap and Demeter are mates. But Munkustrap doesn't even participate in the Mating Dance! I think this so-called Mating Dance isn't so much about mating (or else why would so many kittens be involved?) but about caring for each other and celebrating Victoria's move into adulthood...well, that's another story! Anyway, behaviorally it's pretty uncommon to see Mungo and Teazer acting romantically together. Most of the time, they'll be messing around, or annoying each other - just like twins would!

Thirdly, let's take a look at Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer's origins. As most of you know, the song is taken from a poem by T.S Eliot. In this poem, neither cat is ever given a sex. In fact, it seems that both of them could easily be boys! After all, Rumpelstiltskin, arguably where part of Rumpleteazer's name comes from, is male. For certain, in the poem no intention that they could be mates. And T.S Eliot is the one who invented the characters!

Fourthly, let's look at the performer's point of view. Jo Gibb, who plays Rumpelteazer, was asked in an interview whether she thought Mungo and Teazer were mates or twins. This is her reply: "I definitely think they are brother and sister because there is (I am sorry to say) no sexual innuendo between them like there is between Plato and Victoria." You can hardly argue with that!

In conclusion, I think this article (i.e rant!) proves beyond much doubt that at least in the video production of CATS, Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer are twins - or at least brother and sister. Anyone who can find evidence to the contrary...it's all in your minds, dearies!!!!
