HELEN MASSIE: THE MYSTERY CAT |
|
![]() Are you one of the many CATS fans who on watching the 1998 CATS Video, became entranced by the beautiful, soaring solos of Jemima? Have you, like many others, sought to find out more about the singer "Helen Massie" listed in the credits as voice cover? If you have, you will be familiar with this dilemma. I, Felina the Cyber-Sleuth Cat, took it upon myself to answer a long-standing question after reading a livejournal entry that showed the frustration and confusion that I and other fans have experienced. "While perusing the various shelves of my house, I discovered a video from my childhood. CATS is probably one of my favorite musicals, and, lacking a video player, I went to a site I was sure would not fail me. So Youtube does have some good clips, and I was listening to Jemima (My favorite character) and was entranced by her voice. When she sings in memory with Grizabella my heart freezes and thaws ad infitum because she is that good. But I find out that the actress, Veerle Casteleyn, is not the singer. Helen Massie is, and I of course search for more. But it's like she's disappeared off the map. I can't find a single thing." Cats fans...SEARCH NO MORE! Felina your faithful Cyber-Sleuth Cat, having taken it upon herself to answer this long standing question, has found the mystery cat!!! First came long and fruitless searches through Google and various other search engines, as well as several online communities. Nothing. There must be something we had missed, something that was stopping anyone from finding out about this person. Surely, even if she had been unable to continue her career for some reason, there would be a record of her SOMEWHERE! The fact is, there IS something that has prevented us from finding out about Helen Massie. Something amazingly simple, but yet the cause of 10 years of mystery. The Really Useful Group (RUG), as many of you know, are not always the most accurate in spelling names. Among the more obvious mistakes on the CATS movie and "Making Of" DVD are "Munkistrap" and "Jemmima". Felina the Cyber-Sleuth Cat considers this. What if RUG didn't stop at misspelling character names? What if they also misspelt the name of a performer? She Googles HELEN MASSEY. "Helen Massey's Website". It is the personal site of a British opera singer. The recordings displayed on the website, sung in classic opera style, do not bear much resembelance to the sound of everyone's favourite kitten, nor is CATS listed in the singer's biography, but Felina the Cyber-Sleuth Cat does not give in so easily. She emails the performer Helen Massey, and the next day gets a response.
"Hi Emily.
Yes that was me - some years ago, though! I'm more of an opera singer these days. Please feel free to link to my website www.helenmassey.com.
Best wishes,
Helen" With four simple words, "yes that was me", 10 YEARS OF MYSTERY IS UNRAVELLED! Helen Massey's name was mis-spelt in the credits of the movie, thus thwarting the searches of Cats fans for so many years! Check out her website, Helen Massey.com for more information about her as well as pictures and samples of recent opera solos.
