Luke's High School Academic Win

Luke Malin leads Prep at Academic Decathlon

As presented in the School Newspaper

This is the best the team has ever done, achieving several thousand more
points than the last time they competed. As a result of this incredible
showing the team earned a place as the state of Arizona's First Alternate
Team for the state competition in March.

The team's Head Coach, Mr. Troy Ward said, "We knew we would do well
but we really weren't expecting to earn the points that we did. We even
took Eighth Place in the Math portion of the competition and we thought
that was our weakest subject. Although we didn't get as many personal
medals as we would have liked to, we really came together as a team. The
thing we are especially proud of though is beating so many big 4A and 5A
schools all across the state. We are also extremely excited about making a
name for ourselves as a school. The Arizona State Director told me that
people all over the state are talking about North Pointe and our amazing
showing at the regional competition."

The Prep's Acadeca team placed 41st in the state out of 98 competing
schools in all divisions and will find out if they will compete at the State
Competition in mid-February.

The new topic of study for next year will be released in March and the team
will begin the process all over again for next year. Luke Malin has already
acquired $12,000 worth of scholarship money for his work with the team.

There is no specific season for Acadeca. The team meets before, during,
and after school to study 10 different subjects for the school year until the
regional competition each February. When asked why someone might
want to join this type of academic team Coach Troy Ward replied, "Well,
this is the type of experience that changes a student's life. I am a former
decathlete myself and it actually led me to ultimately becoming a teacher."

"You don't have to be a straight A student to be on the Acadeca team
either," continued Ward. "There are three parts to the team with spots for A
Students (Honors); B Students (Scholastic); and C Students (Varsity).
Anyone can come and try for a spot on the team."

The Prep's Luke Malin received three medals as the Prep
placed sixth, out of 19 teams, at the Arizona Region I
Academic Decathlon for 1A-3A schools at Show Low High
School.

Malin received a First Place in Economics, a Second
Place in Science, and a Third Place in Language and
Literature. Chris Dalpe received a Third Place medal in
the Interview portion of the competition.

Overall the team placed Sixth in the competition with
32,269 points all together. The team also took Fourth
Place in the Speech and Economics categories and Fifth
Place for Interview as well as Sixth Place in the Super quiz
portion of the competition. This year's topic of study was
the American Civil War which the team began studying
this past summer.
