La Manga Strip
Calblanque Beach (National Park)
| Murcia's main attraction is the Mar Menor. This 'little sea' is a lagoon separated by a long strip of land - La Manga. The calm, shallow waters are ideal for bathing. The temperature of the Mar Menor is 5ºc warmer than that of the Mediterranean. Murcia is also one of the regions with the most sunny days per year. With an average annual temperature of 21º C, and 250 km of shoreline along two seas - the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean - make it a little known top destination.
The Park has been designated a Protected Natural Area since 1987 and Nature Reserve since 1992. Calblanque is an amalgamation of wonderful sand beaches, sandbanks, arid hills, cliff tops and salt flats all of great ecological value.
This Nature Reserve represents one of the last untouched areas along the Mediterranean coastline. To reach Calblanque take the motorway towards La Manga, once past Los Belones, take the next singposted exit. There are car parking areas, an information booth, a camping area and a list of recommended routes. |
San Javier Santiago de la Ribera Cabo de Palos Sightseeing
Los Alcázares (pronounced "al cath er as") is situated at the very centre of the Mar Menor's west coastline. Originally a seafaring village, Los Alcázares was named after the palaces that were built by the Arabs. Today, its population of more than 6,000 and its many visitors share the wonderful climate, its promenade, long sandy beaches and marina not only during the summer, but the whole year round. The waters of the Mar Menor are so relaxing at any time of year, it provides long stretch of clean sandy beaches, (they are cleaned every day), the safe calm water provides an excellent playground for children of all ages.
Probably best known as the local name for Murcia airport (2 miles away), since 1998 San Javier has been the home of an increasingly popular jazz festival in late June. San Javier itself is just off the coast, a well established town with a long history illustrated in its museum. It has excellent shopping and leisure facilities, including an impressive sports centre.
Perhaps the most attractive of the Mar Menor resorts, Santiago de la Ribera sits on the shores of the Mar Menor directly in front of San Javier and the two are closely linked. Home to a superb marina area and some of the best restaurants in the region, it's no surprise that luxury villas and manicured gardens are the standard,
Across from the Marchamalo salt flats, Cabo de Palos is a small point of land jutting out into the Mediterranean. Naturally equipped with many small bays and inlets, it has always been a centre for fishing and the main port area is one of the prettiest on the entire coast. Using fresh local fish and vegetables, some of the best restaurants in the area line the traditional quayside and charge amazingly reasonable prices.
Murcia is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with wonderful architecture, There is a stunning cathedral with year-round exhibitions, wonderful shops and tapas bars, and even a casino.
Cartagena was founded by the Carthargenians in 227 BC - Hannibal’s capital city on the Iberian Peninsula. The narrow streets of the old town were built around the ruined 13th century cathedral and there are several sites of historical interest including the remains of the Roman road, an old Roman theatre, and an ancient lighthouse of Moorish origins.
