Frequently asked questions

How much are your puppies? How do you determine your prices?

Our puppies generally range in price from 650 dollars to 950 dollars depending on breed, sex, colour, coat and sometimes just plain personality!

What is better? Male or female?

Most people think that a female is a better family dog, but in my experience a neutered male makes the best pet every time.  Females can be moody and a little more tempermental..  The boys are generally more laid back and easy going.  The disadvantage to males is of course the marking of territory, which can be annoying when out for a walk, but this can be trained when they are growing up.

What if I can’t keep my dog?

We know when you adopt a puppy that you have every intention of keeping him.  But sometimes in life things come up, and if you can’t keep your dog, for whatever reason we will ALWAYS take him/her back.  We will keep them here until we find them a home, and if we can’t find them a home they simply stay here.  We do NOT want our pups ending up in shelters or bouncing from home to home.

How big will they get?

Size of course depends on the mom and dad.  Our cockatzus  or shipoo’s are generally about 12 pounds when full grown.  Our cockapoos and whoodles  generally get about 25 pounds when fully grown.  Of course this is just an average.  All pups are individuals, and they can vary a little off the estimate.

Do you recommend crate training?

We absolutely recommend crate training!  Crate training is a great way to keep your puppy safe when you are not at home or not there to watch over him.  You won’t come home to chewed electrical cords and a dead puppy or a couch in pieces because the pup was bored or poop and pee everywhere!  After the first little while the pup will learn not to mess in his crate and will actually be very content  in their crate.  Crates should ONLY be used when you aren’t there, and NEVER as a means of punishment or as a “time out” when they’ve done something wrong.  A crate is a place of comfort and safety for your pup and your house!

Are they hypo-allergenic?

Poodles, wheatens and shitzu’s are hypoallergenic, however when we cross them with spaniels there is a chance of these dogs not being hypoallergenic.    When we are dealing with allergy issues we ask our puppy people to make a visit, and get right in with mom and pups.  Spend at least an hour with them and then go home and see if there are ANY reactions.  If things are alright, we send our pups home on a one week trial basis.  We ask our puppy people to be honest and realistic about their experience.  It’s easy to say that you can “live” with a mild reaction, but you are looking at spending the next 15 years of your life with this dog, and it’s better to make te decision  now to find the right puppy for you and your family.

How long have you been breeding?

My family raised German shepherds when I was a child.  When I got married and moved out on my own I raised Alaskan Malamutes, and then when my children were born, I quit for a while, It’s hard having 7 HUGE dogs in the house with 2 young children.  My daughter was given a cockapoo when she was 3 and then a couple of years later my son got a cockatzu, from there it was a natural step for our family to start raising puppies again.  They’ve always been part of my life and they always will!  As well as raising pups of our own, we also do fostering and rehabilitation of older dogs that have behavioral problems.  We don’t make money on those dogs, but it feels great to see a dog that was heading for euthanasia go into a new home and  make that family complete.

How often do you have puppies?

We breed our girls on average every third heat or about once a year.  We do not breed for Christmas puppies and suspend sales of our pups from December 15th to January 15th in order to avoid last minute panic purchases.  We do sometimes allow a pup to go home for Christmas, but only if it’s been a planned purchase and they have been waiting for a litter.

What is your guarantee?

Our pups come with a one year full health guarantee  against any genetic defects such as heart murmers, hip dysplasia, eye problems etc…basically anything your vet says is a problem because of the breeding.   In that case we would offer you your choice of either your money back in full and you return the puppy, return the puppy and have another puppy of similar value or if you would like to keep the puppy, we would give you up to half your purchase price back towards the cost of your vet bill.

Do you board dogs?

We do offer boarding to our puppy people only.  We don’t board outside dogs or advertise for boarding.  We charge 10 dollars a day, and we board inside our homes not out in kennels.  My children walk the dogs and play with them every day, and it  is my children who make the money!

What do they come with?

Our pups come with  a full health guarantee, worming and vaccinations to date and lots of love snuggled into them.

How much is shipping?

Shipping within Canada is about 250 dollars and includes a vet certificate , crate, blanket and snuggle toy.   Shipping into the states costs about 300 dollars and comes with everything above and includes the 3 hour drive into the states to ship out of Buffalo airport.

Can I just order one on line?

You can NOT just order one of our puppies.  When we do ship, it is only after having several phone interviews and having matched your family with the right puppy.

Why can’t I have the one I want?

We believe that 80% of  puppies can go home with 80% of families and everything will work out, but we have to worry about that last 20% and make sure that EVERY puppy is going into the right home.  We wouldn’t want to send a really timid puppy home with a family of five boys who like to go mountain climbing on weekends any more than we would want a really dominant puppy going home with a first time dog owner or someone who was nervous themselves.  We want our pups and our puppy people to be happy for the next 15 years and it’s our responsibility to do our best to make sure that happens.

Can I send a deposit?

We do accept deposits after the pups are 6 weeks old and we’ve determined that your family has found a match in one of our pups.  We don’t take deposits before that because until we know what their personality is, we can’t promise a pup to you.

Can I go on your waiting list?

Absolutely we can add you to our waiting list and let you know when a litter is born.

Can I bring my dog to meet yours?

We ask that  you do not bring your dog out to visit.  We know that you love your dog, but we ask you to keep in mind that we often have young unvaccinated pups at our home and we don’t want to put our pups at risk.

Can I visit your kennel?

Absolutely we love having visitors and we encourage people to come visit often.Especially after you’ve chosen your puppy.  We often have people come back to visit weekly to bond with their puppy before they take it home.  Visiting with us and our dogs is the only way to be sure that you are finding the right puppy for you and your family.  We do ask that you call before hand and let us know that you're coming and to NOT visit any other kennels on your way here.  Our puppies aren't vaccinated till they are 8 weeks old and we don't want to risk having something spread from another kennel into ours.

What do you feed your dogs?

We feed our dogs Presidents choice chicken puppy food which is available @ No Frills or Zehrs.  We recommend keeping them on this for at least one month and then if you wish, to start switching them slowly over to a premium dog food such as Royal Canin or Iams

Do you have references?

We do have references available from our vet and from past puppy people on request.

Have you ever had a complaint filed against you?

In 20 years we have never had a complaint filed against us with the local Humane Society  or with the CKC when we were active members.  We are inspected by the local humane society once or twice a year and Our kennels were found to be in good condition with healthy, happy dogs.

Where are you located?

We are located @ 2270 Gordon street Guelph Ontario,   We are about 45 mins west of Toronto. We are just off the 401 on Hwy 6

Why do you raise dogs?

We raise dogs because it’s what we’ve always done.  My family raised them when I was a child and for me it’s just part of the way I live my life.  I love animals and have always fostered, raised or simply owned them.  I can’t imagine a life without them.  They say that you should find what you love to do, and then find a way to make money at it.  For me it’s raising dogs.  I love working with animals, and raising puppies pays for all the other critters I bring home!

Why do your dogs cost so much?

Raising a puppy costs on average about 150 dollars from the day they are born to the day they leave our house.  Keeping and maintaining mom and dad  costs a lot more!  We breed our girls on average once a year, or every third heat.  If there are no problems, it costs about 800 dollars a year to license, feed, vaccinate and groom.  If there are any problems vet bills can run into the hundreds before you know it.  We keep all of our girls after they are past their breeding years and need to pay for their care.  After all that we want to make a profit as well!  What we look for is an average of four pups per litter, with one of them being profit.  Anything over that is just a bonus for us!
