What should I keep my leo in and what size should it be?
Leopard Geckos should be kept in well ventilated wooden or glass vivariums. The mininum size for one adult leo is a 2x1 foot vivarium. The bigger the better though!
Heating, Lighting and UV?
Leopard geckos do not need lighting of any sort. They also do not need UV tubes. I keep mine on a statted heatmat which is placed under the substrate. This is my only source of heat and I have no lighting. During the day the tempertures are: 88-90F on the hot end and low 70's in the cool end. At night the tempertures are in the low 70's all around the viv.
Viv Decor and hides?
The most important part of the viv decor are hides. There should be one dry hide in the hot area and one dry hide in the cool area. You might also like to add a moist hide (in the hot end). You may also like to add rocks and branches to provide intrest and excercise. Make sure tehy are fitting firmly and will not fall and possilby hurt your leo.
What is a moist hide?
I moist hide is a hide that has wet kitchen roll or sphagnum moss. The idea is that the heat from the mat will make the hide very humid and will help the leo to shed its skin. These can be easily made. For mine I use a livefood tub with a hole cut in the side (make sure they're no sharp edges that may cut the lizard. It is important the hide has a closed top so the humidity does not eascape!
What should I put on the floor of my vivarium?
There are a number of different substarte on the market. However, alot of them are not safe and may actually kill your lizard (calci-sand for example) So the safest substrate is one that cannot be eaten. I use kitchen roll but lino, tiles and repti carpet are other others.
How should I clean my viv?
Cleaning the vivarium is explained on our healthcare section.
