OPPORTUNITY FOR SERVICE

A vital part of recovery is becoming less self-centered. That’s what Step 14 is all about.

There are people who have no HA chapter near them (some in prison) who would find great encouragement if someone would be willing to correspond with them.

If you’d be willing to write a fellow-struggler, please let us know, giving your permission to send your name and address to those requesting a pen pal. We’ll let those who ask know of your willingness. We’ll tell them nothing about you and you nothing about them—that’s up to you both. We’ll just put people looking for a pen pal in touch with those willing to be a pen pal. Are you ready to do some Step 14 work?

International:

Prison Fellowship partners with local churches across the country to minister to a group that society often scorns and neglects: prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families. God, unlike the world, has always chosen to identify closest with those who are isolated and broken. “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison, and you came to visit me . . . I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:35-36, 40).

Prison Fellowship reaches out to prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families both as an act of service to Jesus Christ and as a contribution to restoring peace to our cities and communities endangered by crime. For the best way to transform our communities is to transform the people within those communities—and truly restorative change comes only through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Religious Persecution

Note: This commentary was delivered by Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley.

When Americans go to the polls in November, their voting decisions will be based on many different factors: the war in Iraq, the economy, and, perhaps, some recent revelations about former Congressman Foley (R-Fla.).

But there's another issue that should weigh into the decision of voters, especially Christians: religious freedom, at home and abroad.

If what I just said is news to you, you're hardly alone. Religious freedom is something that nearly all Americans, including Christians, take for granted. Unfortunately, many of our brethren around the world know better.

A recent article in Time magazine described the precarious relationship of Chinese Christians to their government. As Time put it, "openly religious" Chinese, by which Time meant Christians, live under the "constant threat" of a "brutal government response" to the practice of their faith.

The situation is even worse in the Islamic world: From Indonesia to Nigeria, the rise of radical Islam has been accompanied by the end of any pretense of tolerance toward Christians.

A few months ago, Chuck told "BreakPoint" listeners about Abdul Rahman, the Afghan Christian convert who faced the death penalty for converting. While he was eventually freed, it was only because of U.S. Pressure, resulting in the court deciding that he was mentally ill-hardly a ringing endorsement for religious freedom.

In Iraq, just about the only thing the Sunni, Shiites, and Kurds can agree on is their dislike for the Assyrians, Iraq's indigenous Christian population. As a result, many members of what is arguably the oldest Christian community in the world are leaving their ancient homeland. A similar exodus is underway among Christian Palestinians.

In Egypt, the Copts, while nominally allowed to practice their faith, must overcome legalized harassment almost every step of the way. Sometimes, the harassment turns to murder: Last year, three Copts were killed, and a nun was stabbed in anti-Copt riots.

It isn't only one-party states and Islamic countries that violate religious freedom: Earlier this month (October 4), Hindu extremists kidnapped and tortured a Christian convert. This is part of larger pattern that includes forced "re-conversions" to Hinduism. What's even more outrageous is that perpetrators include members of India's former ruling party, the BJP.

Here in the United States, infringement of religious freedom takes on many forms. We've told you about the attempt to remove the InnerChange Freedom Initiative(R) launched by Prison Fellowship from prisons because they are, in effect, "too Christian."

Other ministries are experiencing similar difficulties: For instance, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship has been banned from several campuses while other, shall we say, less wholesome groups are fully allowed to operate.

We will tell you more about these difficulties over the next few days. What you need to understand now is that we can no longer take religious freedom for granted, at home or abroad.

We must make the loss of religious freedom an issue in the upcoming elections. Public officials need to be informed and accountable on this issue, not just for our sake but for our brethren around the world. We need to let them know that they are hardly alone in their hour of trial.

NEW LIFE BEHAVIOR

3000 students in 15 States are participating in New Life Behavior (NLB). NLB is an intensive Bible based course that really helps to change the heart of the individual. The 50 lessons cover 300 pages and can be taught through correspondence and in the classroom. NLB is written in Spanish and has a children's course as well. This material is not only for inmates, I would recommend it to all new Christians. NLB connects the inmate with a free world mentor who grades the courses and connects the Christian inmate with a church home upon release.

Their website provides a listing of Jail/Prison Ministry contacts throughout the country.

Prison Ministry in New Zealand

This was sent to me be my dear friend Pastor Paul, who leads the JASON Ministries in New Zealand (www.freewebs.com/jason-online) and also the local Homosexuals Anonymous chapter (www.ha-fs.org):

Dear Brothers,

Greetings in the precious name of Jesus.

I have no idea what happened as I was writting these notes...they vanished from my screen and I found then incomplete in my sent mail folder..this is now the complete article.

As promised I would like to share a few notes on the following...

Prison Ministry
My Personal Ministry
HA in the South Pacific.
My Health

PRISON MINISTRY

I am one of a number of Prison Chaplains who minister to more than 1000 inmates at two men's prisons here in  New Zealand. I have so often witnessed severely damaged men who are trying desperately trying to hold what  is left of their lives together against  increasing odds. These men range in age from 17 to 80+ years. As would be normal for any prison, an across the board range of criminal convictions have taken place, sadly, leading to a time of incarceration. These men have been themselves victims of a range of situations...dysfunctional family and home lives; sexual, physical, verbal, mental or emotional abuse along with numerous other things which have encouraged either directly or indirectly to  progression in or with their criminal activities. Some men however have accepted a challenge that I put to them..to try and move from remaining a victim to that of becoming a survivor and in so doing be a stronger person and one who is then capable of reaching out to others. Often times there is bullying and violence in prison normally directed at the younger and older inmates, but also to those who are vunerable for a number of reasons, the most common being the type of crime that has sent them to prison. In the eyes of most inmates the worst of all crimes is that of pedophilia (child sexual abuse). This in itself interesting as it proves that in the eyes of those who judge pedophiles harshly, life  itself holds no meaning for them as rape and murder are not judged anywhere as harshly as pedophilia. Most often men are keen to talk with a minister and interestingly enough, ministers are held in high regard by inmates,,,again, something strange given that these self same inmates have no respect for anyone else. Their lives are completely self-centred and self- absorbed blocking out most help or understanding that could come their way. Often times inmates do not understand that those left on the outside are  doing TIME themselves. They are left to maintain the family home, children, bills and so on and yet try and contend with quite unreasonable demands that are so often placed on them by their loved ones inside....demands for money are by far the most common. The thing that excites me and causes me to continue in the Prison Ministry are the questions asked about Jesus and the Christian life. And then once in a while a person asks me to be present whilst he surrenders his life to Jesus.....this is the ultimate joy and privilage to me. Having said that, I often times think that I am unworthy to be in such a blessed ministry given where I have come from in the past. I may never be anyones hero now or in future times, but, Jesus will always be my hero. Thank you Jesus.

MY PERSONAL MINISTRY

My personal ministry is extended past the walls of a prison. I have recently become involved with hospital  chaplancy and along with  prison ministry this is where the rubber meets the road. Recently I was asked to sit with a person with a terminal illness. This person did not have family or friend support and so I sat in effect for 3 days as that person lay dying. The greatest privilage I have ever experienced was to be there with him when he died. Thank you Jesus.

HA IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC

New Zealand would have to be the most apathetic country I have ever minstered in. We I was much younger Aotearoa New Zealand was known as God's own country, and now to minister the Gospel to us Kiwis is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. We are no longer open to Christianity as we once were, and this is evidenced daily in attitude and activities that must surely make the Lord Jesus weep. May be I might be criticized for suggesting that New Zealand is now parked at the gates of hell. Promiscurity screems from every corner of our inner city streets, gay night clubs, bars, mens saunas, gay prostitutes and so on are common place along with the newly passed CIVIL UNION BILL which falls just short of  same sex marriages. Gay rights are now seriously considered as a matter of course before anything can be or is done in this country. As far as HA goes in New Zealand, it is very hard going with few people interested in changing their ways. Even, those who know that their actions and attitudes offend the almighty One, they still persist in going their own way even though an option has been opened to them in the form of HA..".what if my family, friends etc found out", "what would they think" are just some reasons that are offered as to why these self same people do not wish to surrender their present life style and accept the challenge to go "straight' with Jesus. Personally I am inclined to think that the real reason is that these people whilst are from happy with their homosexual life style, they do not want change for fear of 'missing out' and becoming 'old men with no sex appeal to the younger set.' This is Aotearoa New Zealand.

The South Pacific Islands are also very hard to minister in. And, although the islanders in the main are very spiritual people the peoples off these islands are against homosexuality in a most definte way often times ostracising those who are homosexuals to the extent that family, friends, church and so on wish no further contact with that person, hence the numbers prepared to accept change as offered by HA is minimal. These present members would under no circumstances be prepared to communicate with others about their SSA. I maintain a discreet email connection with the men and one woman who have come forward to receive mutual support and love to help them appropriate a change in their lives.....please pray for our dear brothers and sister in these countries.

MY HEALTH

My health during recent times has not been all that good as I have had a number of heart attacks and surgical intervention on a few occassions. Medical advise suggests  that I should slow down and rest up. That sounds like good and healthy advise, having said that, I am finding that I have to weigh up the balance between sitting down and doing nothing or continuing to go about the work that I was ordained to do. I know that what the doctors are suggesting is relevant, but so also is the spiritual well being of the many people I come across on a regular basis...therefore, I choose to continue to minister the Gospel in  fullness and truth to these dear souls who are tormented daily by principalities and powers and fleshly desires.  It is my desire to see these people accept Jesus into their lives.I want to introduce them to my hero, JESUS. To see these people rise like a pheonix from the ashes .  I found in a dictionary the following to compliment "the rise like a pheonix from the ashes".... "A person or thing of unsurpassed excellence or beauty." I rest my case for Jesus.

God bless you Guys.

Together we walk with the Father.

Paul (Aotearoa)

Prison Ministry

PRISON CHAPLANCY

After having been on the "INSIDE" so to speak, I can speak with a certain amount of authority when it comes to understanding the NATURE OF MAN.

I was imprisoned for a reasonable period of time...a period of time that would sorely test most people and often times to the limit of their endurance. What held me together during these difficult times was my faith in almighty God. Yes, there was the support and love of dear friends in Pastor's Mike. and Les. I guess in some ways, the three of us were a very real pain not only to our fellow inmates, but also to the establishment itself. You see, to hold firm regardless of the circumstances in not as easy as it might seem to some. When the going gets tough, that is the time to get off one's backside and on one's knees and storm the throne of grace until that breakthrough comes...and it will...often times not as I or others might have hoped for or expected but, it does come.

The NATURE OF MAN is often times depraved through and through. The things that man does to other human beings is so often times mind boggling to say the least. Having said that, I  have given much thought to, WHAT WOULD JESUS DO. One thing I know that Jesus would not do, is judge...he never judged whilst He was on earth, and yet, so often man takes on more power and authority than He had when he was on earth.

After release from prison, I was accepted back into full time ministry and pastored a number of churches, but was never satisfied. There was always a yearning deep inside me to do something more...but, it took a few years and many hours on my knees to find what it was that Jesus wanted of me. And, so back to prison I went. Knees trembling as the doors were slammed behind me yet again, something that I had thought I would not experience again. But here I was...unaccepted by other prison chaplains because I was one of the bad boys..someone who had "DONE TIME."

I came very close in the early days of my chaplancy to giving up and going back to more comfortable territory in the local church.....still, again the thought came to me "WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?"

The more I prayed, the more I started to see lonely, scared, abused and betrayed men. Men that had little or no hope because no-one believed in them. This revelation reduced  me to tears and it was then that the Lord Jesus could use me according to His purposes not only for myself, but for those inmates...men who were created in His image and likeness. To be able to kneel with them in their cells and prayer with them, to weep with them and to see gradual change is something that I cannot finds words to express my feelings. These are all His children and are deserving of not only His love, but also the love of their fellow man. One does not have to experience a prison sentence to undergo such a transformation.. ..in fact one does not need to minister as such to prisoners themselves, but we MUST reach out to others as though it was Jesus Himself we were reaching out to. What an awesome privilege to be trusted by the Master to minister His name in such difficult places. The Great Commission in Mathew 28:19-20 is surely our goal, or at least it ought to be, for it reads; “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” If this were our goal, I am sure that  many a person would not end up incarcerated, rather, they would have been encouraged to accept Jesus into their hearts...let’s try to do that.

I have seen amazing change from sinner to that which is righteousness in the blood of Jesus Christ. And, if that does not bring tears of joy and thanksgiving, I am unsure what if anything will.

I know that I am an unworthy servant of His, but a servant I am and will remain so until my time here on earth is over. I am not glamorous in speech, in writing, in most things I guess, but He has changed my heart to see His beauty in all of His children. Where would I have been if I had not experienced firsthand the terrors of incarceration? I thank Jesus daily that he allows me to go through such an experience, and why is that...because I can relate to God's people...people who are hurting and holding numerous feeling of helplessness and fear? May almighty God bless our brothers and sisters in prisons throughout the world.

I also ask that you prayerfully consider those that minister to our dear brothers and sisters on the INSIDE.

God bless..

Paul (Aotearoa)

True happiness comes from hoping in God, despite adversity

Examples of what a prison ministry can do - taken from Madison Ministries:

1. Bible classes aimed at behavior modification, conversion and spiritual growth.
2. Correspondence courses aimed at conversion and spiritual growth.
3. Courses to prepare inmates for release such as “Scriptural-Based Money Management.”
4. Letter writing to inmates. Special guidelines are provided.
5. Church sponsorship of a Faith Based Honor Dorm. An Honor Dorm is a place to live for those men who want to change their lives. It has an intense structure where responsibility and accountability are taught. Each resident is required to be enrolled in a religious class at all times.
6. Family Night. Two special nights are set aside each year for Honor Dorm residents who meet certain strict standards. Friends and family can visit at these times. The church provides food and visits for those inmates who will be alone those nights.
7. Worship services are conducted Sunday afternoons in the chapel of Honor Dorm 16, which the Madison church sponsors.
8. Gospel meetings are held at the prison each year.
9. Personal hygiene items for indigent inmates that are provided through voluntary contributions by members.
10. Appreciation meals for the prison staff are provided periodically. Members of the Madison church serve these.

Or look at Memorial Road Church of Christ:

Opportunities to serve:

  • Write letters of encouragement
  • Grade correspondence courses
  • Conduct Bible studies in the prisons
  • Drive vans to correctional facilities to provide transportation for prisoners to and from worship services
