All right, go ahead and look at it, then c'mon back. We’ll wait for you.

If you wanna know why it remains unfinished, flash back with us to early 1999. As we geared up for Wizard #100, we dreamed up the idea of a 100-character jam piece drawn by comics' biggest names. George Pérez laid out the ginormous 39-inch-by-23-inch piece, and Alex Ross, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane and more graciously agreed to participate. It soon became evident, however, that such a colossal undertaking would not be completed before our deadline. So we reluctantly shelved it. Now, after 100 more issues, we're showing it to the world in hopes that it will renew enough interest to start it up again—and that we can eventually auction a finished piece off for The Hero Initiative. Next time you see it, with any luck, it'll be done!

The biggest treat of putting this together was seeing Todd McFarlane draw the two characters he built his career on. McFarlane doesn't illustrate much for the public anymore, so being able to show this makes us feel all warm and gooey inside.

We got a lucky break when we sent the piece to the WildStorm studio. In one shipment, we snagged not only Jim Lee, but J. Scott Campbell (drawing the Gen13 gang) and Travis Charest (who contributed Grifter from WildCats).

Because George Pérez did most of the brick-and-mortar gruntwork by laying out the entire 100-character piece, we gave him the option to draw whatever characters he wanted. He chose Scarlet Witch, Wonder Woman, Beast, Thing and Starfire.

What's funny is that Jim Lee penciled this Batman (with inks by Scott Williams) before he was ever approached to draw Batman. Campbell provided Abbey Chase, the star of Danger Girl. And among his other Astro City contributions, Brent Anderson only penciled Confessor so he could ink it when other characters around him were completed.

Alex Ross did his part in an uncharacteristic black and white to stay true to the rest of the piece. Ross even tacked a sheet of vellum over Superman alerting other artists that their sweat or body heat could accidentally smudge the gouche paint he uses.

Erik Larsen illustrated his Savage Dragon around unfinished characters such as Wolverine, Cyclops, Colossus, Rorschach and Human Torch. Who will ultimately draw them? Guess you'll just have to wait and see!
