Ferme Itsy Bitsy Farm

We aren't so "itsy bitsy" anymore!!

Fibre, meat and milk

Icelandic sheep are a triple use breed.

They are a great dairy choice, are considered gourmet lamb and have fibre that is a spinner's and felter's dream!

Icelandic sheep are an extremely hardy sheep.  They are fairly rare as they were only imported approximately 20 years ago. They are reliable twinners even having up to 6 lambs at a time!  They lamb 5 days earlier than other sheep thus lambs are smaller and there are fewer lambing problems. They have survived in one of the world's harshest environments, where natural selection has made the modern Icelandic hardier yet than his ancestors.  They eat everything, no wasted hay which is a farmer's dream!  They are best kept grain free and can be fed sillage, haylage, pasture, hay... Our Icelandics are horned.

They produce beautiful wool that is 2 layered or dual coated, meaning that it has a long outer coat, tog (27 microns), and a fine inner coat, thel ( 20-21 microns). Their wool is naturally coloured.  This coat should be removed twice yearly in early Spring and mid-Autumn.

We will be selling the 2008 lambs for summer as breeding stock or pets and the meat lambs in late fall.  The lambs will be raised on nothing but hay, pasture and mother's milk.

Teddies !!!!

Olde English Babydoll Miniature Sheep

The perfect sheep pet....and they have wonderful fleece too!  If you are looking for a novelty sheep, that has a fantastic, friendly disposition and a smile on his face Babydolls are the sheep for you!  These real life teddies are a perfect addition to any farm! They are truly cuddly pets -our little guy even slept on the door step for the longest time waiting for us to come out and play!

They are rather rare which explains their high price.  Also, once used for their quality carcass, the rarity of the breed has meant for them that they are now mainly a fibre breed offering  approximately 5 lbs of fine (19-22 microns) fleece.

Our sheep are all registered with the Robert Mock registry.  We are still unsure if we will be selling any 2008 lambs, but feel free to email should you like to be put on a waiting list.

For more information please see the North American Babydoll Southdown Sheep Association and Registry.

Beautiful fuzzballs

Shetland sheep

We also have these 2 wonderful ewes that came to us quite wild and  frightened , but are now such pets!  Shetlands are polled, meaning that they genetically do not have horns.  We have a reddish brown ewe and a black ewe.  They are the largest wool producing animal in the UK.

They were left to run with Shroeder the babydoll ram, then housed much later with cupid the Icelandic ram.  So if they do lamb, depending on when we will know what cross they have had!  That's fine by us.  Their offspring will be sold as pets or fibre sheep since whoever the sire of the offspring the lambs will most definately have wonderful fleece!
