The Irish Fancy canary originally started out as the Roller canary around 1974 and for many years they were known as Irish Rollers. They are now known as the Irish Fancy canary as over many years of selective breeding they have developed to the modern day Irish Fancy. In those early years the Irish fancy was show as a "type" canary along the east coast of Ireland, particularly in the town of Wexford. As the breed progressed its popularity spread all over Ireland and in 1978 the Irish Fancy Canary Club of Ulster was formed . As from those early years the club has grown from strength to strength. The formation of the Irish Fancy Canary club was to promote the study development, breeding and exhibition of this beautiful little canary. The clubs first show was held in Coleraine Town hall in November 1988 and as from then this show has been an annual event. The annual general meeting is held in February every year were office bearers are elected to help in the smooth running of the club. The Club elects a President, Vice President, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Show Secretary, Ass Show Secretary, Show Manager, Auditors and a Committee. It also has a panel of judges who are engaged to place the awards at the shows this ensures that the Irish Fancy is judged by a qualified judge. The Club also supplies rings which can be purchased by becoming a member. The club allocates patronage to any clubs/societies who applies for it and the club also provides a classification in which to show yours birds as there are many different colours. This little canary in recent years has taken off in the UK and is in the process of being recognized at the world show. It is amazing that the Irish Fancy canary in its short existence has come a long way and long may it last.
