I wrote this, and although most of it was from memory (I know, I know!!!!! Too obsessed…) I did use the book as reference. Please do not copy it from my site, if you wish to use it as a reference for yourself, that’s fine, it’s what it is for, but do not paste in on your site, and call it yours.

Concerning Arwen Undomiel and her Lineage and Family
Arwen Undomiel, which is Arwen Evenstar in Elvish (either Quenya or Sindarin I am not sure, but since Elrond is of the Noldor elves, and they speak Sindarin, then I would think that it is Sindarin). Some compare her to Luthien, the fairest elf maiden ever born, who gave up her immortality for Beren. Arwen is Luthien reborn, and she is daughter to Elrond and Celebrían.
Celebrían was taken by orcs, and her twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir, pursued them, and killed them, but it was not soon enough, and Celebrían was hurt. She could not be healed, not even by her husband Elrond, the greatest healer in Middle Earth, and so she went to Valinor.
Elrond half Elven is the son of Eärendil (Idril of Gondolin and Tuor son of Huor) and Elwing (descendent of Luthien by her son, Dior, who succeeded Thingol in Menegroth, and Nimloth) , who gave birth to twins. Eärendil being a man and Elwing an elf, their children had the choice of becoming either race, as was the choice of their children after them. Elrond’s brother, Elros, chose to be of mankind, but his life was longer than a regular man. He grew to be the first king of Numenor. Elrond chose to be of elf kind, and so they were separated.
Elrond’s children were; Arwen, Luthien reborn, and Elladan and Elrohir, his twin sons. He also adopted Aragorn, who he named Estel, which is Hope in the Sindarin tongue, since he was the future Hope of Men, and because he knew the enemy would never give up trying to find the Heir of Isildur. Aragorn bore the Ring of Barahir, the captain of men who was the father of Beren, the mortal who earned the love of Luthien. Aragorn and Arwen fell in love, and Arwen gave him her Evenstar pendant, as a symbol of her undying love to him. He carried it with him until they met again in Gondor.
His twin sons do not get a part in the movie, and are only briefly mentioned in the book. Elladan is the elder, born first. They are dark haired and grey eyed, and only those who knew them well could tell them apart. No one knows what they chose, to be with their father and mother in Valinor and immortality, or stay with their sister in Middle Earth and die with her. Again, no one knows what they chose, but they probably chose the same thing, as their bond was very close. Because their mother was kidnapped by orcs, they hate them and often hunt the dark creatures. They fight in the war, joining in with Aragorn and the Fellowship in the end.
Beren is the son of Barahir, and he bears a ring, two serpents with emerald eyes, one devouring, the other crowned with golden flowers. He is the last survivor of his father’s group, because one of them, Gorlim, betrayed them to Sauron, and they were killed, all but Beren, who was away from the camp. He wandered into Menegroth, penetrating the mazes and barriers of Melian, and found Luthien, dancing in a glade. They fell in love, but Daeron, a minstrel who also loved her, betrayed them and told Thingol, her father. When Beren was brought in front of the king, he was told that the only way to earn his daughter’s hand in marriage was to retrieve a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown in Angband.
So together, Beren and Luthien braved many dangers, with the help of ten companions and Huan, the hunting wolf from Valinor. In short, together they reached Angband, and Luthien put Carcharoth to sleep, as well as Morgoth himself and his realm. Beren got a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown, although the tip of the knife snapped and Morgoth awoke, as with the rest of his realm, and they fled. Carcharoth devoured Beren’s hand, which held the Silmaril and he became mad. They returned to Doriath, and Thingol gave his blessing, but Beren had to stop the wolf. Along with other warriors, Beren and Thingol hunted the wolf with Huan, and in the end, both dog and wolf died, but Beren was gravely wounded, and died. Luthien was overcome with grief, and followed him to the Halls of Mandos, where she begged the Valar to let them be together. Mandos was moved, and Manwe granted her two choices, since she had died, she could return to life and live in Valinor, unchanged. Or, she could return to Middle Earth with Beren and together live, but she would be doomed to die, as a mortal woman would. She chose this, and Luthien became the first elf maiden to leave Arda, and would not be the last.
“…clad in a mantle of silver and blue, fair as the twilight in Elven-home; her dark hair strayed in a sudden wind, and her brows were bound with gems like stars.”
“Blue was her raiment as the unclouded heaven, but her eyes were grey as the starlit evening; her mantle was sewn with golden flowers, but her hair was dark as the shadows of twilight. As the light upon the leaves of trees, as the voice of clear waters, as the stars above the mists of the world, such was her glory and her loveliness; and in her face was a shining light.”
“Yet in her choice to Two Kindreds have been joined; and she is the forerunner of many in whom the Eldar have seen yet, though all the world is changed, the likeness of Luthien the beloved, whom they have lost.”
