The Ipswich jujutsu club is practicing a traditional Japanese martial art of Ryoi Shinto Ryu & Dentokan Aiki Jutsu.
Jujutsu is a forerunner to modern judo and aikido, and has many different styles. Although each style highlights different aspects, they all share a number of features. At the Ipswich dojo we teach (throws, take downs, hold downs & joint locking techniques & kata. What to expect in one of our jujutsu lessons. A class begins with a gentle warm up, rotating the neck & shoulders etc right down to the feet. Then we'll go onto stretching the legs, and back which are required to be flexible when practicing Jujutsu. After that we'll go through all the break-falls which are required to prevent injury whilst being thrown. Then we'll partner up & go through some techniques & Kata.Trying to explain what we do is very difficult so try to come along to a class and see what it`s like for yourself. If you require any more information please use the contact us link at the top of the page. We train on Wednesdays at St Mary Magdalene Church Hall, Highfield Approach, just off the Norwich Road in Ipswich.

Dress:
An outfit called a Gi is normally worn but for the first few lessons a sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms are perfectly acceptable. Traditional pleated trousers called Hakamas are also worn. Then if you want to purchase a Gi (suit) or a Hakama you can see one of the senior instructors who will be able to purchase them at a discounted trade price. The Gi must be clean and in good general condition with no rips or tears. A torn Gi is potentially dangerous in that joints or limbs might be injured if they are caught in a tear during training.

Dojo Rules and Etiquette
To learn ju-jitsu it is essential to accept the etiquette and customs of the dojo. These assist both learning and safety.
1. A Rei (bow) should be made on entering the dojo (Training Hall) to signify mental preparation for training. A Rei should also be made before leaving the dojo.
2. Upon reaching the edge of the tatami (mats) the student should wait to catch the eye of the Instructor and bow when stepping on to the mat.
3. If a student has to leave the mat area at any time he must inform the Instructor. When leaving the tatami (mats) for any reason.
4. Cleanliness must be observed. You should also take off all jewellery, or cover it with sticking tape. Finger and toe nails should be kept short & clean. Long hair tied up. We don't recommend that you wear glasses. If you need to, we don't accept responsibility for damage to them. Please ensure they are safe to use for sport. Gi`s must be washed frequently & kept in good repair.

The meaning of the word jujutsu
Ju refers to softness or flexibility as opposed to the hardness. Jutsu refers to technique or art. Thus, JuJutsu means soft techniques or soft art. Furthermore there are several ways to spell Ju-Jutsu such as 'Jiu-Jutsu' or 'Ju-Jitsu'. “We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our trainiing"![]()
