AP) A judge Friday ordered a psychological evaluation for a woman accused of stalking Catherine Zeta-Jones at the request of a defense attorney, who claimed outside court that the actress had driven the defendant to attempt suicide.
"Catherine Zeta-Jones has driven Dawnette Knight to attempt suicide and the real blood is on her hands," attorney Richard Herman told reporters at the downtown criminal courts building.
The accusation came after Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg suspended the preliminary hearing for Knight, 32, to have an evaluation of whether she is competent to assist in her own defense.
Knight, who wrote numerous letters threatening Zeta-Jones, is accused of one felony count of stalking and 24 felony counts of making criminal threats. She is being held on $1 million bail.
Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas testified earlier this week at the hearing, which will determine whether there is enough evidence to put Knight on trial.
"We are going to slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs," said one letter read in court by Zeta-Jones.
Last month Knight issued an apology for the threatening letters. She said in a letter released by her attorney that claimed she had been infatuated with Douglas.
The hearing was also halted on Thursday, when the defense attorney said his client was still groggy after taking sleeping pills because she wanted a good night's sleep.
But on Friday he said it was an attempted suicide by an overdose of barbiturates.
"This case has turned into Hollywood against Dawnette Knight and it's not a fair fight," Herman told reporters outside court.
Referring to the letter of apology, Herman said his client had asked for forgiveness.
"Instead of forgiveness we have seen a campaign of vilification in the media which is both mean-spirited and vicious," Herman said.
After accusing Zeta-Jones of driving his client to attempt suicide, the attorney said, "Nothing further" and walked away.
Earlier, Herman and the prosecutor, Debra Archuletta, conferred with the judge in chambers for about 25 minutes.
The attorneys then returned to the courtroom, where Herman asked for the suspension.
The judge requested more details about Knight's mental state.
Herman said Knight had taken barbiturates Wednesday night, was unable to participate in her defense and needed an evaluation.
"Yesterday it was two sleeping pills," the prosecutor interjected.
The judge then questioned Knight directly.
"Do you know why you are here," the judge asked.
"Yes, ma'am," Knight said.
"Why?" the judge asked.
"Because of the letters I sent to the Douglases," Knight said.
The judge asked her if she was able to participate in her own defense.
"He says I can't so obviously I can't. He's my lawyer," Knight said.
The judge asked Knight if she understood that suspending the hearing would not end the case but would result in a battery of psychological tests. Knight said she understood.
Herman complained that a request for an evaluation would normally simply be granted.
The judge said the prosecution had turned over press clippings in which the defense attorney had said his client just needed some sleeping pills and does not have mental problems.
The judge told Herman it was an unusual situation, and he said, "I've reconsidered that and I'm concerned overall about my client's health."
The judge said that if Knight is found competent, the parties will return to court Aug. 16, but that due to vacations, the preliminary hearing would resume in September.
Zeta-Jones and Douglas were not in court Friday.

Catherine Zeta Jones has been telling an LA court about the death threats she received from a stalker.
The actress said that one letter threatened to cut her up "like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs."
Catherine's hubby, Michael Douglas, has said the harassment brought his wife close to a nervous breakdown.
The court has to decide if 32-year-old Dawnette Knight should go on trial for multiple counts of stalking.
The defendant has written a letter of apology and her fiancée Ronald Calvin says it was a joke that went too far:
"Dawnette Knight and some unnamed friends conspired to annoy Catherine Zeta Jones based on a tabloid story that she was having an extra-marital affair with George Clooney."
"She understands she crossed a very dangerous line with society and she is sorry, it will never happen again."

Stalker Attempted Suicide, Zeta-Jones Blamed
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Outside a Los Angeles court on Friday (July 30), the attorney of an alleged stalker claimed that actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is the cause of his client's attempted suicide.
It was reported on Thursday, that Dawnette Knight, 32, who is accused of stalking the Oscar-winning actress, was groggy from taking sleeping pills while in jail. Now, however, the defense says that she overdosed on drugs after being persecuted by Zeta-Jones, according to the AP.
"What's actually happened is that Catherine Zeta-Jones has driven Dawnette Knight to attempt suicide, and the real blood is on her hands," says defense lawyer Richard Herman.
Prosecutor Debra Archuleta responded to the accusation, saying, "We are shocked and outraged that the victim in this case, Catherine Zeta-Jones, is being portrayed in this manner. We believe these statements by defense counsel to be inappropriate."
Knight is charged with one count of stalking and 24 counts of criminal threats, which include phone calls and letters that date back to the beginning of 2003. She is held on $1 million bail.
On Wednesday, Zeta-Jones read 19 of the letters in court. The numerous graphic death threats described intentions to "slice her up," "chop her away" and "slash her throat." The disturbing correspondence also made references to the Nicole Brown Simpson and Manson murders.
In light of Knight's condition, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg has suspended the criminal proceedings while Knight is evaluated for mental competency. If she is found competent after undergoing a battery of psychological tests, the hearings will resume in September. Both parties are due back in court on Monday, Aug. 16.

Catherine Zeta Jones' stalker sends her an apology
A woman who had a major crush on Michael Douglas and had been pestering Catherine Zeta Jones with threatening letters, has reportedly apologised to the actress.
According to Eonline, Dawnette Knight, who was arrested earlier this month for harassing the 'Chicago' star with a series of phone calls and threatening letters, admitted in a note that she is just a "confused young woman infatuated with Michael Douglas" who has "no rational explanation for my actions."
"I want to apologize for any distress I have caused you and your families," she added.

Police officers investigating the woman accused of stalking Catherine Zeta-Jones found links to a telephone calling card that was used to make death threats against the actress, a detective has testified. The threats were telephoned to an Amsterdam hotel where Zeta-Jones was staying while filming "Ocean's 12" and prompted her security staff to obtain a bulletproof shield that could be used to protect her in case of attack, a Los Angeles sheriff's detective, Dana Duncan, told the court. CZJ Movie Review
Catherine The Great: This film is very well directed, and very well acted on Cathy's part. It follows the biography of the brutal leader of Russia [which she played beautifully.] However, it also follows a personal story about Catherine The Great.
Best Scene: The scene where Catherine seduces the man who holds the power was acted quite good. Also, the part where's she talking to the guy at the church my favorite line there is: "I will rule. It's all or nothing." Said by Cathy as Catherine ever so beautifully.
America's Sweetheart's: If you need a goofy comedy about stuck-up rich people, you HAVE to see this, double-overed laughing comedy about actress Gwen Harison [Cathy] and actor Eddie Thomas [John Cusack], so funny, it's a must see.
Best Scene: The end scene where Christopher Walken is showing the film is always good for a laugh.
Entrapment: If you liked Oceans 11, or basically ANY con movie, watch this, it'll make ya laugh, cry, maybe even scream at Sean Connery for being such a jerk in the beginning. It's good though, watch it. Not her BEST but good.
Best Scene: Well, this has a number of good scenes, if yer a guy you'll like the car chase, if yer a girl you'll like "The Millenium Robbery" scene.
Chicago: One of her best films, boy, she has a set of pipes on her!, and all that jazz. She plays the wise one, the one who's been around the block before. But, like Catherine The Great, for Velma Kelly, "It's all er nothing."
Best Scene: Again, it has a variety of good scenes, my personal favorite is Cathy and Renee's duet "Hot Honey Rag/Nowedays."
Intolerable Cruelty: Merilyn Rex-Roth-Doyle-Massey is a money stealin', gold diggin', man stealin', stuck-up little rich girl. The thing is she's new at the whole gold digger thing, but with her old time gold diggin' friend to help her, she robs all three of her husband's blind! Well, maybe not all three of them, ya see, it's a whole big con, from the second husband on. But that french idiot Puffy ruined the first marriage. Stupid Puffy. But, if there's anyone who can match George Clooney is suave, and savvy, oh boy is it her!
Best Scene: Well, the FUNNIEST scene, in my opinion, is the "Puffy goes and ruins it all in the court room" scene, so funny. Another funny scene is when Geoffery Rush try's to nail his cheating wife's ass in the very beginning, that was pretty damn funny as his wife is driving away in the Jaguar after calling Rush an "Australian piece of sh1t!" and stabbing him in the ass with his "Austrailian Daytime TV Award."
Mask of Zorro: Beautiful spanish accent she can fake. Er, good movie, one of her first here in the US, good casting. Adorable Antonio Banders and Anthony Hopkins make good Zorro's.
Best Scene: The scene where Hopkins finds Bendaras and makes him Zorro is pretty good. The dance scene Cathy and Antonio do is fabulous. And the cloths ripping sword fight is funny yet strangly erotic on Antonio's part. The two roles of Cathy and Antonio are beautifully cast, nobody else could've played them.
The Haunting: One of her best, if I do say so myself. She does perfectly playing bi-sexual, yet oddly cheery Theo. It's funny though, because before I saw the movie, I was reading the book, and I kept picturing Cathy as Theo. It was a great movie all in all, and there we're a lot of deleted scenes, all included in the script, which is posted here.
Best Scene: Hm, toughy, well, the whole movie is great, but the scene is[suprisingly, Cathy's not in it] where Nell and the doctor are walking around in the greenhouse, and they sort of flirt. That's pretty good, the deleted parts are better, also shown in the script.
Sinbad: Well, I mean, it's animated, not that bad for a kid's movie, the only reason I watched it is because I have a strange goal in life to watch anything and everything she's in, only three more on my list!
Best Scene: Well, there's even a couple scene's in it when Cathy's not in it, those suck the most, but THE BEST is when Brad Pitt thinks Cathy has left him, but then she comes sailing up in a boat. But maybe I dreamt that part, I fell asleep on it.
