The idea for
The Intergenerational Project ’Free To Be Your Age’ came from a group of older adults who were interested
in the idea of writing a song about challenging ageism.
This grew into an idea that the
Community Education Department might apply for funding for a larger multi
focused creative project which could involve younger and older adult students
within Wester Hailes Education Centre.
Education
happened for both groups side by side in our building, although very little
happened with both ages together
This led us to
ask the questions
How could each group benefit from contact
with the other?
By engaging in creative work together could
we break down some intolerances and challenge some stereotypes?
We hoped this would offer an
opportunity for each age group to express its views in the medium of
Song, WebPages, and Digital Photography resulting in a poster combating ageism.
The results of the 3 groups would be combined on a website and through creating
an image to be used to combat ageism.
Then each age group’s creative efforts would be
shared and a further piece of creative work would be generated together within
each media.
By making a DVD and recording the
process we hoped others could use it as a stimuli for discussion on ageism.
The DVD would be part of a toolbox that others might use, or add to.
This poster is the creative work of the older and younger generation
photographic group working together.
