Q: I want dreads. NOW!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

A: Right I admire that man. Here's a foolproof guide a friend of mine used:

Introduction

Dreadlocks, or dreads, are a cool hairstyle for some, and a spiritual pursuit or political statement for others. If you have the right kind of hair, these steps will put a new twist into your locks.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You'll Need

  • 1 quart of tap water
  • Beeswax or pomade
  • Fine-tooth metal combs
  • 1 tablespoon of vinegar
  • Hairstyling software
  • Rubber bands
  • Hair accessories

Steps

1

Step One

Consider that dreadlocks work best on those with curly or very kinky hair. If you have thin, straight or wavy hair, you may want to give yourself a home perm with very thin rods. The perm will impart the needed texture.
2

Step Two

Stop using conditioner a week to 10 days before you begin the process.
3

Step Three

Mix about 1 tablespoon of vinegar mixed with 1 quart water. Rinse your hair with this vinegar-and-water solution the day you plan to start making your dreadlocks. This solution will remove any residue or buildup that may impede the process.
4

Step Four

Begin with dry hair. Take a portion of hair about 1 inch square at the roots. Twist the hair tightly.
5

Step Five

Pin the rest of your hair back with hair clips or put it in a rubber band so you can concentrate on one portion at a time. Back comb the section of twisted hair, beginning at the root and moving to the ends and then back to the scalp again. People with a great deal of texture in their hair might find that their hair stays in that tangled position after twisting and some combing, while those with less texture will have to comb quite a bit.
6

Step Six

Add a dab of dreadlock styling wax, beeswax or pomade to each section after combing, then retwist it. Wax will mold your dreads and help each lock stay twisted.
7

Step Seven

Secure the end of each dread with a rubber band, leaving some hair poking out. This step holds the twist and eventually gives your dreadlocks rounded ends.Complete the twisting process over your entire head.
8

Step Eight

Depending on your lifestyle or time frame, you might twist a few portions a day or your entire head in one sitting. Enlist the help of friends to create dreadlocks in the hair on the back of your head.
9

Step Nine

Twist, comb and wax on a regular basis to get your dreads to hold their shape. Remember that this hairstyle requires a lot of maintenance, so work on it while you watch TV, while you listen to music or whenever you find a free moment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for a fine-tooth metal comb or back comb for creating your dreadlocks. With the amount of combing you'll need to do, plastic combs may not hold up under the pressure.
  • Hair wax or beeswax helps secure your dreadlocks, but it may also dry out your hair and scalp and attract dust and dirt. Look for styling waxes or pomades specifically made for dreads.
  • Wait a few weeks after the initial process before washing your hair.
  • Avoid towels, hair bands and bandanas made out of materials that shed: terry cloth, flannel or combed cotton. They will leave little particles embedded in your dreadlocks.

Q:  How to Squat in Abandoned Property?

The international squatters symbol.

The international squatters symbol

A: Squatting, the practice of living in abandoned or unoccupied spaces that a squatter does not legally own, is a great way to avoid paying rent, if you’re willing to take the risk. While many squatters are routinely evicted, arrested, harassed, or even, in some parts of the world, beaten or killed, some manage to make comfortable long-term homes on someone else’s property. A few are even able to take legal possession of their adopted digs through a process called “adverse possession.” Whether you're unemployed, underpaid, or just extraordinarily thrifty, squatting may be the solution to your housing needs. You could just even be having a row with the 'rents! Either way there are a few tricks I was told by actual kids who squat/know-it-alls ect.

  • Know the laws in your area. In many jurisdictions, squatting is a criminal activity and may land you in jail. In some places, squatting is legal as long as you follow certain procedures and avoid breaking other laws, such as breaking and entering. Just be ready to accept whatever happens, and remember your safety is above everything else.
  • Stay in a group, and be careful who with. NEVER SQUAT ALONE. NEVER. When choosing squatmates bare in mind these are no roomies. There's no landlord, so there would be breakouts, if you're not careful. Choose sensible people with knowelge of the law like yourself, and who GENIUNLY are trustworthy. You'll need to set ground rules. The more you can iron out the ground rules before you settle in, the better. Some squats, for example, prohibit drinking alcohol on the premises, while others mandate that each member devote a certain amount of time working on squat. It’s important that you come to these rules through collaboration and compromise. Write them down, if possible, and have everybody sign them.
  • OK now find somewhere suitable to squat. Suitable places include abonded houses, old schools, caves, tunnels, warehouses ect. Make sure they're empty before even scoping them out. As a squatter you can NEVER be too safe. Enter the space. If you have any reason to believe the space is actively used or might pose a health risk to you or your squatmates, do not squat it or attempt to enter it. When first entering a building, try to find a way in that does not require you to “break in” or otherwise cause property damage to gain entry. Sometimes the door will be open or missing, but other times you may need to enter through a window.
  • Scope it out. Once inside, try to get an idea of how sound the structure is and how safe and comfortable it would be. Beware large structural cracks, sagging or broken ceilings or floors, or other signs of serious damage. Of course, if the building has been condemned that’s often a good sign that it is unsafe, but that is not always true. Also check how well insulated the building is—is it cool inside on a hot day or warm inside on a cold day, for example—and see if it looks like it could be made into a home. Expect the premises to be dirty—you can clean it up, though.
  • Have a test run. Try it out for a night or two and consider it. If you feel safe, continue to squat and do everything that is necessary to turn it into a habitable area. Some abandoned structures still have running water or even electricity. Take advantage of this.

The exterior of a squat in Spain. Note the squatter symbol in the doorway on the left. Note also that while the building is colorful, it appears well-maintained. In many parts of the world, squatters can establish a legal right to occupy the property if they take care of it and establish themselves, and as a result squatters can be quite conspicuous. This squat is even decorated with political messages. In other parts of the world (such as in much of the U.S.), squatters must depend largely on their ability to go unnoticed.

More stuff:

  1. Clean the place up. Obviously you’ll want to sweep away the layers of dust, get rid of rats or other pests, etc., but you should also try to make the building habitable and comfortable. Not only will this make your living situation more enjoyable, it will, in some jurisdictions, make it more difficult to have you removed, and it may help you negotiate with the owner if he or she shows up. Patch holes in the walls or roof, bring in appliances or get the existing ones working, maybe even add a coat of paint or plant a garden. This is your home, after all.
  2. Try to get utilities. Sometimes the water and power will be on when you get there, but usually this isn’t the case. If you’re planning on staying for a while, try to get these services turned back on. In many countries, utility services can’t be denied just because you’re squatting. Still, it’s usually best not to disclose that fact when dealing with utility companies. You may need to pay a deposit or pay off unpaid bills from the previous owners. If you’re just planning a short-term stay, you’re probably best off not trying to get utilities as it may bring unwanted attention to you.
  3. Decide how to deal with the neighbors. There are two opposing methods of interacting with neighbors. Which you choose should depend on the circumstances of your squat.
    • Be as inconspicuous as possible. Try to make sure the neighbors don’t even notice you’re there. This can be pretty easy depending on where the squat is located. Try to enter only through the back door or only at night, and be as quiet as possible while within the building.
    • Befriend your neighbors, if you are willing to take the risk. If you’re planning on staying for a while, somebody will eventually discover you, so you might as well be upfront and positive about your presence. Introduce yourselves and let the neighbors know that you’ve moved in. Make sure they see you making repairs to the building or cleaning up the yard. If you can make a rundown exterior look great, your neighbors might actually appreciate you. If you have enough support from the neighboring residents/owners, they might support you if your squat if is encroached upon.

Staying Safe while home alone

When I'm home by myself (esp at night) I get scared, and with these tips I got and printed off the Suzy Lamplugh Trust website I now know what to do if the worst ever does happen.

Prepare!

Be aware of potential risk situations and how to deal with them.

Avoid risk

  • Draw the curtains after dark.

  • Make sure all the windows are secure.

  • Lock the door from the inside.

  • Whenever possible, call someone to let them know you've arrived home.

  • If someone knocks on the door, check who it is. If you don't know them well, don't let them in.

  • If you have a back door, always lock it before you go to the front door. Some thieves work in pairs - one will keep you talking at the front door while the other tries to enter by the back door.

  • Don't tell any caller, including phone callers, that you're alone. Tell them your mum/dad/big brother is asleep or in the bath.

  • If the gas man or similar calls. Tell him/her it's not a good time and to come back later.

  • If you're nervous, ask whoever's at the door to come back at a more suitable time - even if you know them.

  • Know where to find the phone numbers of people to call in an emergency.

What if...?

  • You arrive home and see signs of a break-in, eg a smashed window. Don't go in. Go to a neighbour you know well or trust and phone the police. Use your mobile if necessary.

  • You receive an abusive or threatening phone call. Put the receiver down by the phone and walk away. Come back a few minutes later and hang up. Don't listen to see if the caller's still there and don't say anything. An emotional reaction is just what the caller wants. Tell your parents. If the calls continue, tell the police and your phone company (eg BT), and keep a record of the date, time and content of the call.

  • You think you hear the sound of an intruder. Call the police as soon as it's safe to do so without alerting the intruder.
