~ Todd & I in Florida (1985) ~

~ The Final Music Match~

Music played such an important role in our relationship; second only to humor and fun. It began when we were both in our teens and liked the same genre of music, rock. He was obsessive about his albums and I was not allowed to touch them. ~I always was a rebel.~ My biggest mistake of all time was writing out my love for my then-boyfriend on Todd's "NightRanger" album (that "then-boyfriend" is now my husband...what can I say...at least I didn't destruct his property on a passing fancy). From that moment on I was banned from his room and therefore any access to his beloved albums. He "booby-trapped" his albums with small slips of paper and when one small slip was out of place my Mother was sure to be the first to know of my criminal activities. In my defense, I was accused more often than I was actually guilty and I blame it on gravity.

As we grew older, got married (me to my "then-boyfriend, Todd to my best friend) and lived in separate households we were able to share our love for the same type of music together. I'm sure this is because I no longer had access to his albums (now CD's) and he could breathe easily at night knowing I wasn't going to sneak in and mishandle them or bless them with my autograph or artwork. Some of my favorite memories come from the last couple of years together. We would spend hours on the phone, sitting in front of our computers, trying to out do the other by having in our possession a song, usually from the 70's or 80's, that the other one "had totally forgot about." It was like a weird Jeopardy category and would go something like this: Todd "Betchu don't have this one..," then he would begin playing the song but just the intro. In this case it was the beginning of Henry Gross's "Shannon." It was then my job to guess the song, which I could do 9 times out of 10. We found ourselves saying, "Oh man, I totally forgot about that song," a lot and would often write it down to download later. We spent many hours and days "wasting time" on our music matches, but we enjoyed those times more than any "productive" time we ever spent together.

The title of this paragraph is  misleading because even in death our "music matches" continue. You can call it coincidence or synchronicity but I FEEL it and accept that we are still communicating through music. It seems fitting that this should be so. It gives me immense comfort and has been a constant lifeline for me; when I am missing him, he comes to me with a song that seems to continually say to me, "Don't cry, don't worry...I'm still here, we're still connected, we'll see each other again someday." I feel him in every guitar rift and in every song we've ever shared. We loved with music and I mourn him with music. Below is a very long list of songs that hold the memories, silent conversations, laughter and tears of Todd and I.

"When I hear music, I fear no danger. I am invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times, and to the latest."

~~ Important Song Lyrics ~~

Adia ~ by Sarah McLachlan

Adia I do believe I failed you
Adia I know I let you down
don't you know I tried so hard
to love you in my way
it's easy let it go...

Adia I'm empty since you left me
trying to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
to see where we went wrong

'cause there's no one left to finger
there's no one here to blame
there's no one left to talk to honey
and there ain't no one to buy our innocence
'cause we are born innocent
believe me Adia, we are still innocent
it's easy, we all falter
does it matter?

Adia I thought we could make it
but I know I can't change the way you feel
I leave you with your misery
a friend who won't betray
I pull you from your tower
I take away your pain
and show you all the beauty you possess
if you'd only let yourself believe that
we are born innocent
believe me Adia, we are still innocent
it's easy, we all falter, does it matter?
believe me Adia, we are still innocent
'cause we are born innocent
Adia we are still
it's easy, we all falter ... but does it matter?

"The Reason" ~ by Hoobastank
I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why i need you to hear

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is You [x4]

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you
* This is a current "music match" between Todd & I. Both of us
apparently feel the lyrics from our own point of view. .

A Heartbeat Away ~ by Mark McGann

I know you are in Heaven

I know you're only a heartbeat away

I know that you can hear me,

Many things I have wanted to say

How I understand you,

More and more each day

Your words are spoken through me

In your way

And although you can't be with me

You're never far away

You are in the air I breathe today.

I know you are in Heaven

I feel that you are watching over me now

I wonder what you're thinking,

I wonder if I still furrow your brow

And though the words would fail you

The times you tried to say

Just how much I meant to you those days

I will not forget the kindness

The debt I can't repay

I know you would have wanted it that way.

I know you are in Heaven

I know I must keep moving along

The path to greater meaning

Till I find where I truly belong

But there's one persistent question

That keeps me coming back to you

Was there really nothing I could do?

While I try to find the answer

In every phase that I pass through

You know it's strange,

But I grow more and more like you.
