Twilight Essay
Twilight is a young adult vampire novel written by Stephenie Meyer. It's the first book in the series, and introduces seventeen-year old Isabella "Bella" Swan who moves away from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington. She soon finds her life in danger when she falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen. The Story takes place in Forks, Washington, modern day, when Bella attracts much attention at her new school. But as the story progresses, Edward and Bella become inseparable. Despite Edward's struggle to resist his desire to kill her, they manage to stay safe for a time.
In the first book, Bella Swan moves from Sunny Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie. She never made a lot of friends in Phoenix, but she attracted much attention at her new school in Forks. At first, when Bella met Edward in biology, he seems repulsed by her and attempts to change his schedule. Being utterly confused by his attitude, she persuades a family friend, Jacob Black, into telling her the local tribe legends. Although she was inexplicably attracted to him, even when she concluded Edward's family was a group of vampires, Bella was much relived to learn the Cullens drank animal blood. Eventually, the two fell in love. But not all tale's have a happy ending. Their perfect state is thrown into chaos when another vampire coven sweeps into Forks. James, a tracker vampire, decides to hunt Bella for sport. The Cullens plan to distract the tracker by splitting up Edward and Bella, but the plan soon fails when Bella receives a call from her mother. Luring Bella to an old dance studio, alone, James attacks her but the Cullen's interfere, rescuing Bella and Killign James. At the end, Bella declares her desire to become a vampire, but Edward refuses.
The main Characters are Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. At first, Edward meets Bella, a human girls whose thoughts he is unable to read. He fights his growing attraction to her, but after saving her life several times, he gives in. Edward admits to Bella that he is a vampire, and although he retains the physical body of a 17 year old, he was actually born in 1901. He was tranformed into a vampire by his adoptive father, Calisle Cullen, in 1918, to spare him from death of Spanish Influenza. Now Bella Swan, 17 years old, parents divorced; she quickly becomes intruiged by this pale beautiful vampire. She is constantly warned about being around him, but her love and confidence in Edward's restraint goes unheeded, even after she becomes targeted by a "non-vegetarian" vampire.
Based on one of it's genre traditions, love and Romance is the first major theme of twilight. The way two people become attracted to each other and become mates. Stemming from more of the novel's genre traditions, horror and the supernatural, humanity and mortality are another additional theme. And finally, Family, providing another way for people to bond, which leads to conflict.
The story of Twilight twists and turns through it's ups and downs and you know that there is always another surprise waiting just over the page. I recommend this book to all readers, with balancing action, romance and fantasy; the three elements are woven together with delicacy and skill. Stephenie Meyer's imagination with Vampires brings the idea to a new level, leaving the reader breathless and wanting more. twilight is an "extrodinary love story, that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page."
