The church of St. Thomas the Martyr, founded by King Edward I in about 1290, lies fittingly at the centre of the town and is renowned for its beautiful 20th century stained glass windows. Also to be seen is the Millennium Tapestry created by over 20 of the town’s women to celebrate that occasion. The local museum is located on the upper floor of the Court Hall This lovely old town that is so obviously proud of its past is really worth visiting
The pretty little town of Winchelsea lies a few miles to the west of Rye and is just as historic. The Strand Gate is one of the original gates built in the 13th century and formed part of this small
town’s defences.
