BREAST IMPLANTS AND OFFSPRING HEALTH
Pediatrics for Parents; 1999, Vol. 18 Issue 5, p11, 1/6p
Abstract: Reports on the results of a Danish study on the health of children whose mothers have silicone breast implants.
Many questions have been raised about the health affects of silicone breast implants. For the children of women with silicone breast implants, there are concerns about an increased risk of esophageal disorders, connective tissue diseases, and congenital malformations. The children were followed for up to 20 years after birth.
Doctors in Denmark evaluated the children of 1135 women who had silicone implants and 7071 women who underwent breast reduction surgery. When compared to the population as a whole, there was an increase in esophageal disorders in offspring of women with the breast implants. No differences in connective tissue disorders or congenital malformations were noted.
