Many credible journals have published reports that link silicone implants to illnesses. Some physicians are unaware that implants may cause systemic complications  because these medical devices have been approved for marketing. Complicating this matter are the research studies funded and/or conducted by those who benefit monetarily from implants, which seemingly support their claims that patients with silicone prosthetic devices are not more likely than the general population to develop certain illnesses.

Reports linking saline-filled implants to illness have also been published. The envelope of a saline-filled breast implant is a silicone polymer that may break down in the body into silica, which can cause an immune response. Silica has been reported in lymph nodes in saline breast implant recipients who have never had silicone gel implants. 

When seeking information about implants on the Internet, remember that Web sites de-emphasizing the risks associated with implantation are mostly funded and/or operated by pro-implant lobbyists who have vested interests in these medical devices. The breast implant industry generated a profit exceeding 1 billion USD in 2006.

The number of men and women having augmentation procedures with silicone implants continues to rise. Without understanding the local and systemic complications that can occur after augmentation procedures with silicone, a patient cannot make an informed decision to have plastic surgery. Silicone implants continue to cause controversy and concern amongst physicians, legislators, and the public.
