27.11.03 - Ima Nemic were the second act on, a two piece who were not playing garage rock or blues. Suited in black attire, the stripped down sound was refreshing and deafening. They were fuzzy, overdriven and loud, a testament on how to rock. Drawing their influences from a different variety of sources, but definitely not the White Stripes. Imagine early 'Jesus and Mary Chain' crossed with the experimentation of 'Sonic Youth'.

6.3.04 - If you know who Sonic Youth are and like them, then this is probably for you. The two some, guitarist/songwriter and drummer have no trouble filling the venue with slick dissonant airwaves.

9.3.04 - It's the first time I've seen Ima Nemic and I liked them a lot. I was initially a bit worried they'd be a White Stripes-a-like (two piece, drums + guitar...) but they sounded bugger-all like that. Thank god. What they did sound like was bits of Sonic Youth mashed up with slivers of The Boredoms and a sprinkling of Butthole Surfers. Certainly mad bastards to keep an eye on.

Headlining the night were the two-piece band Ima Nemic, featuring Chris deDutton (vocals and guitars) and Dani Nemic (drums). The bizarrely named duo really are an incredible live act to witness, playing with a frantic, frenzied energy, and making an immensely overpowering amount of sheer noise - far more than two people should be able to create!

At times the sound strayed so far from what we are used to hearing that we could begin to question whether this was exactly 'music' in its strictest sense, but whatever your feelings on the melodic qualities, it was undeniably entertaining.

I think Jez from Fuchsia summed up their sound most effectively, with his simple comment that what we experienced that evening was what can only be described as "sonic terrorism". If only all terrorists were as benevolent as this - the only assault here was on our eardrums (although saying that, certain parts of Vida did get a bit of a beating from Dani's drumsticks - his improvisation proved that rhythm doesn't just have to be achieved on a standard drum kit!)

If anything, this gig was actually somewhat small-fry for the lads, having already played at more significant venues, such as Manchester University Students' Union, and recently at Derby Assembly Rooms for the Beer Festival. Another claim to fame (for both Vida and Ima Nemic in fact) is that last time the band played here (May Day - only a few months back) they were joined in the line-up by Hope of the States.
