For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

The tomb itself was in use during the Roman Period — up until A.D. 135.

In my estimation, it was the best example of a rolling stone tomb in the country of Israel.

It seems to illustrate well passages from the Gospels which speak of Jesus' tomb as being

closed by a rolling stone. See especially Matthew 27:57-66; 28:1-2;

Mark 15:42–47; 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–2, 10–11; and John 20:1, 11–18.

After the "Last Supper" Jesus retired to this garden to pray with his disciples (Matt 26:30-56; Mark 14:26-52; Luke 22:39-53; John 18:1-12). It was here that the disciples slept while Jesus prayed and where ultimately he was captured and led away to be tried.

Qumran is the antiquity site near the caves where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were found in the late 1940’s

and early 1950’s. It is located on a rise 1 mi. [1.6 km.] west of the Dead Sea, 8.5 mi. [14 km.] south

southeast of Jericho, and 13 mi. [21 km.] east southeast of Jerusalem.

There were eleven principle caves that contained scrolls. These scrolls are now housed (primarily) in

Jerusalem, in the Shrine of the Book. They contain some of the oldest known portions of the Hebrew Bible

(= Old Testament) as well as many other extrabiblical documents. The total number of documents

discovered in the caves near Quman is believed to be about 800.

Roland de Vaux, a Dominican father from the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem, excavated the site in the early 1950’s.

A variety of archaeologists have worked at the site since then.

This is a view of 9 portions of the “Copper Scroll” (3Q15) that was discovered in cave

3 near Qumran. It was the only scroll that was engraved on copper (most were written on papyrus or parchment).

This particular scroll describes 64 places in Palestine where portions of the treasure of the

Jerusalem temple were hidden prior to the temple's destruction by the Romans in A.D. 70.

Because it was of copper it was not unrolled, but it was actually carefully cut into pieces,

that are visible in this image, so that it could be read.

This artifact is housed in the small but important museum on the Citadel in the middle

of Amman, Jordan.

This is the Basilica of the Annunciation that was built over the site where tradition maintains that the angel

Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear the Messiah (Luke 1:26–38).

When this church was built—in the 1950’s and 1960’s—excavations revealed some archaeological

remains from the first century A.D.

Note how this “center” of Nazareth is situated down “in the bottom of a bowl”—the hills rising up all around it.

In Jesus’ day it was a rather small insignificant place.

Below the main church is a sacred grotto that is associated with the annunciation by the angel

Gabriel to the Virgin Mary

that she would bear the Messiah.

This is the main altar in the grotto, and the words inscribed on it (not clearly visible) state in Latin

“Here the Word Was Made Flesh.”
