Illawarra Numismatic Association

Coins, Notes and Medals

Introduction

Following initial expressions of interest invited by Michael Delhaas the inaugural meeting of the association was held on 21/9/05 at the Ribbonwood Centre - Dapto. The first meeting attracted about a dozen individuals and a decision to proceed to form an association was taken.

It was decided that the second meeting would take place on 8/11/05 with the main agenda items being the structure of the proposed association and the possibility of striking a foundation/commemorative medal.

Although the formal structure was not finalised at the second meeting on 8/11/05 it was however decided that there will be only a single member category at this time with an annual membership fee of $20. A catagory for minors was also adopted with an annual fee of $10.

The meetings will now be held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Figtree Bowling Club from 6.30PM.

NEWS/UPDATES

May 2006

Only 10 members attending but some interesting items on display including coins from The Shire (Lord of the Rings). These were produced long before the movie and were not related to the movie. Coins from old diggings at Corrimal and some silly money from Hutt River, Lundy and copies of notes from the confederate states of America.

Next Month: Members Choice

New additions to the catalogue

April 2006

An enjoyable meeting with quite a few members showing their militaria related collections. Some nice stories told. Michael has written a nice article for the next issue of "Ramblings". Next month - "Funny Money"

Some more images have been added to the varieties catalogue and a .pdf version of the journal is also available.

March 2006

We are still sorting out our formal structure and committee. I think it would be fair to say that we are likely to become an incorporated body and follow a formal constitution to guide our normal operations.

As at the March meeting we had 29 paid members

Proposal for a club journal has been floated - the first draft will be presented next month

Illustrated Catalogue of Varities (Serge)

I have held an interest in pre-decimal coin varieties for many years now. My main gripe has been the lack of available resource material. Up until recently the only books available were over 40 years old and poorly illustrated. Unfortunately the recent ?Australian Pre-Decimal Coin Varieties? by Ian McConnelly suffers from the same fault.

I propose to set up an ever evolving website with illustrations of varieties (and normal) coins. All members are invited to submit images (scanned images in .jpg preferred) along with details and any matching catalogue entries (if known) and I will include them on the website as a resource to the numismatic community. See links on left.

October/November 2005

We decided with the striking of the SEA CLIFF BRIDGE COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL.

We were notified by the RTA in late October that the opening date of the bridge had been brought forward to 11/12/05. We decided to proceed with the striking however the design process was limited to only a few days. Using internet resources and some graphics software we were able to come up with a very pleasing design and the resultant medal was well recived and the surplus generated leaves the association in a very healthy state.
