Reestablishing

We, as a company, have had a few hardships over the last few years.  Many senior members retired, many members relocated.  Funds have been down.  Volunteer hours have dropped.  Over the next year we are going to revamp the company from the inside, out.  New members are being accepted.  The hall is being spruced up.  The kitchen will have a facelift.  Our roof is being fixed.  Equipment is being replaced or fixed.  Fundraisers are being planned.  We are essentially reestablishing the entire company.  Please be patient with us as we try our best.  Any help you might be able to give, whether donations (not just monetary) or in-kind volunteer hours, will be very appreciated!

How we got started...

Jonathan R Davis Volunteer Fire Company (aka Idetown Volunteer Fire Company) was concieved in July of 1959 when a group of citizens met to discuss an incredible offer made by Albert Davis, son of Jonathan R Davis, to subscribe to the cost of a new fire truck. Davis also decided to let the fire company use his carriage house for $1.00 per year.  The first truck purchased was a 1959 Chevrolet pumper with a 750 gallon capacity.

Volunteers met twice at the carriage house (now the site of the Fire Company).    The carriage house was then renovated to include a meeting hall, two bays and a kitchen.  (It was later expanded and renovated again to look as it is presently.)

On November 18, 1959, the application to become a non-profit oranization was filed and approved. The Jonathan R Davis Volunteer Fire Company was born!  The company was named after the prominent banker whose summer home was in Idetown.

Individuals elected to office were Sheldon Cave - President, Edward Darby - Vice-President, John Hewitt - Secretary, Paul Dorris - Treasurer, Ben Banks - Financial Secretary, Willis Ide - Fire Chief and Harry Donnelly - Assistant Fire Chief.  Directors were Andy Lavix, Ernest Fritz, William Casterline, Harold Donnelly, Albert Sweitzer, Willis Ide, Jim Kenney, Marshall Patton and Lester Hoover.
