'Too Haven is an avian rescue dedicated to all species of Cockatoos.  To learn more about who we are and what we are doing, please take a look around.

Our Goals:

(Mission Statement):

To take in unwanted, neglected or abused Cockatoos and give them a chance at a loving, thriving, fulfilling environment.

To rehabilitate those Cockatoos that can be rehabilitated and place them in permanent homes.  Or, to provide a permanent loving home to any Cockatoo that is unsuitable for adoption.

Provide education and educational resources for all parrot owners and potential parrot owners, including, diet, care and requirements.

If a bird will not receive the same or better care than it does here with us, it will not be adopted.

Why do we Rescue?

Why do we Care so much?

If you do not know what is required

of you in parrot ownership,

P L E A S E !!

don't adopt and add to the problem.

What we are about and why:

I (Dana) became a parrot owner in 1985 when I used to work at a local pet store in High School.  This was long before pellet diets, avian vets and the internet.  Once my children grew older I decided I wanted another bird.  I spent weeks on the internet researching species. Thinking I had done my research, my husband (Patrick) and I bought a baby Umbrella cockatoo.

Shortly thereafter I was approached at my office by a woman who overheard me talking about my bird.  She asked me if I was interested in another.  We then acquired our 2nd Umbrella Cockatoo (Zoe), who was already 6 yrs old and we were to be her 5th home!  At first, Zoe was a sweet, wonderful, loving bird.  Then she became comfortable with us and turned into a demon.  I went back to research.

It was then that we learned about rescue, adoption, abuse, plucking, mutilation and the vast numbers of unwanted parrots who were being shuffled from home to home.  After getting involved with BirdLove Avian Sanctuary, located in Columbia, South Carolina, we decided to help the birds as much as possible.

Adoption and Rescue: Free Flight Sanctuary

ECHO'S HAVEN

SANCTUARY

Echo's Haven
Macaw Rescue Sanctuary
The Complete Bird Community

Welcome to "Echo's Haven" Bird Sanctuary and Retirement Home. Where birds have a home for life.

View pictures and descriptions of the birds of

Echo's Haven.

We are  a self-sustaining  rescue sanctuary, a "forever home" for parrots. Our organization is dedicated to providing a safe, healthy, happy home for unwanted, abused or special needs large birds.

Our mission is to provide a FREE-Flight environment for Macaws to live life as close to their natural world, as possible.

Our major experience is with large Macaws and have had tremendous results with taking in frightened, biters and screamers and transforming them into happy, healthy, well-adjusted birds that have a love of life and enjoy living the life of a bird.

We are dedicated to the premise that birds need to fly, scream and live in flocks. A happy bird lives a long, healthy life.

Fred is a Greenwing that is over 84 years old and Miss Piggy is a 66 year old Red-sided Eclectus hen.  They were pretty old when they came to Echo's Haven, but they have been with us for over 8 years and are still going strong, though Fred is still bald.

Baby came to us plucked, but today is a healthy, fully-feathered girl. She is the sweetest bird I have ever seen. She will go to anyone and loves everyone. It still amazes me that her previous family was terrified of her and kept her locked in a cage, with no human contact for 15 years.

Echo is the Scarlet Macaw that started it all, starting an understanding and love of large Macaws that is the foundation for all the principles of our sanctuary. Today, Echo is 12 years old and still as sweet as she was at six-months old. She taught that gentleness, respect and love are the basis for a long-lasting relationship between bird and human.

The other wonderful birds we have rescued have each taught us many lessons. From Bluebelle, we learned how much it hurt to rescue an abused bird and teach her to trust humans again, only to lose her to a stroke. From Asia, we have learned how territorial a bird can become when it is allowed to become wild. Holly has taught us that there are no limits to how intelligent a bird can be and that birds really DO  have a sense of humor. From the Budgies, we learned that it is better to get bitten by a Macaw than a Budgie! LOL

Every day with these wonderful beings is a gift that we cherish.

We are now in the process of looking for land that is suitable to build a large aviary to house the rescue birds. Your patronage of our shops will allow us to build the aviary much sooner.

Echo's Haven exists solely with the help of you, our visitors, so please support us in any way you can. there are still so many birds that need rescuing.

This site was designed to provide information, resources, enjoyment and the best pet supplies at low prices to you. Enjoy the site and tell your friends.

Center for Avian Adoption, Rescue, and Education

Do you need to find a good home for your parrot(s)?

We can help!

C.A.A.R.E., the Center for Avian Adoption, Rescue, and Education, is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation located in Fargo, North Dakota.

Although North Dakota is our home, we welcome the opportunity to extend our services to any area we are able and would be happy to hear from anyone sharing our interest in the care of companion parrots, wherever located.

Our mission is:

To reach out and educate the public on the appropriate health care and general well-being of companion parrots. To find homes for displaced companion parrots through our adoption program. To provide a friendly and caring environment for our members and guests to socialize and learn from one another.

The Center for Avian Adoption, Rescue and Education (C.A.A.R.E.) is an all-volunteer North Dakota non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation devoted to the welfare of companion parrots.  The organization is family oriented in nature, and both individual and family memberships are available. The organization is dedicated to teaching the public about exotic parrots. Requests for on-site visits to schools, nursing homes, and any other venue are welcomed. We welcome persons interested in adopting and/or fostering companion parrots placed into our care. Our mission to find suitable adoptive homes for these parrots is taken quite seriously. Fostering is a wonderful way to decide if a certain type of parrot is right for you and your family, without having to make an adoption commitment first. If you have a parrot that needs a home, if fostering, adoption, or an educational meeting appeals to you, or if you already have companion parrots and would like to be in the company of folks with like interests,

 please check us out!

When, Why, And How To Find A New Home For Your Bird

Bird Lovers Only Rescue

P.O. Box 552

Dyer, IN 46311

When

Any permanent lifestyle change which affects the amount of time you interact with your bird.

Permanent lifestyle changes include :

1)   Death in family

Primarily the person which the bird was bonded to.

2)   Marriage

Bird becomes jealous and develops an attitude.

3)   New baby

Attention is taken away from bird due to new addition in the family.

4)  Divorce

Primary caregiver or person the bird was bonded to is living elsewhere.

5)   New job

 Extended hours away from bird.

6)   Health

Unable to care for bird's needs due to own health and well-being.

7)  Moving and unable to take bird along.

8)   Desire or need to travel which leaves bird with someone other than the primary caregiver or  'human mate.'

Why

Birds are pets first then they quickly become family.  We call them our feathered children, but if we could understand their language they would be calling us their mate.  They come to life when their human mate walks into the room, and they call for their mate when he/she leaves the room.

They want AND NEED interaction and affection.  No one can devote all the hours in the day to their bird.  But the amount of time must remain constant or personality changes occur.

They can become sad, withdrawn, spiteful, angry, jealous, bite their human mate, or even begin to hurt and mutilate themselves.  The conscientious bird owner must recognize the difference between a temporary lifestyle change and a permanent one.  Seek a new home before the bird's personality changes become permanent or difficult to reverse.

There are not enough experienced and qualified bird behavior specialists out there to take on the task of retraining all the 'problem birds' nor should it get to point of needing one.  Bird owners often hold onto the bird because they believe that the demands of work or family will lighten up and they will once again be able to spend time with the bird.  Others have gotten so attached to them that they feel guilty in finding a new home for them.  And still others believe that the bird is better off with them and could not possibly be happier elsewhere even though the bird is stuck in its cage with little or no interaction.  As the months become years, the personality changes become more ingrained.

PLEASE  DO  NOT  WAIT  UNTIL  YOUR  BIRD  IS  A  PSYCHOLOGICAL

AND/OR  PHYSICAL  MESS

BEFORE  YOU  FINALLY
DETERMINE  THAT  YOUR  BIRD  WOULD

BE  BETTER  OFF  ELSEWHERE

How

There are many ways of finding a home for your bird.

1)     You can place an ad and sell your bird to anyone interested in buying it, not knowing the care or love it will receive in its new home.

2)     You can ask your family, friends, and even co-workers if they would be interested in taking your bird.  The advantage to this is being able to visit the bird from time to time.

3)     You can contact your vet's office and ask if they know of anyone who may be interested in providing a good home for their bird.  This is always a good place to check since vets will know who takes good care of their birds and may be able to refer you to an interested client.

4)     You can contact a bird rescue and ask what their adoption policies are.  The advantage to this route is that the rescue will check veterinary references as well as character references of the applicants interested in adopting your bird.  A rescue may also conduct a home visit prior to adoption to ensure that it will be going to a safe, healthy, and happy home.  A rescue has the time and ability to scrutinize applicants and find the most suitable, permanent, and loving home for your bird .
