PROJECT OVERVIEW
1. Description of our Community
Iligan City, tagged as the “City of Majestic Waterfalls” is located at the Northern coast of Mindanao, Philippines. The city has its beginnings in the village of Bayug, 2.5 kilometers north of the present Poblacion. It is bounded on the north and northeast by the province of Misamis Oriental, on the east and southeast with the province of Bukidnon and Lanao Del Sur, on southwest by the province of Lanao del Norte and on the west with the Iligan Bay. It was the earliest pre-Spanish settlement of native sea dwellers, known as Maragats. In the later part of the 16th century, they were subdued by the Visayan migrants from the island kingdom of Panglao. These migrants, led by Pedro Manuel Manook established Bayug as the earliest Christian settlement in the area sometime between 1597 and 1609. From being merely a small district in the Department of Mindanao and Sulu, Philippine Islands in 1903, it grew into a municipality in the ten unified province of Lanao.
The utilization of the Maria Cristina Falls into a hydroelectric power generating plant in 1952, hastened the urbanization of the city. Industries were established and more people came to settle. Simultaneous with its population growth, is the increase in the city’s revenue. In 1983, it was reclassified as a highly urbanized city due to its impressive collection performance.
2. Summary of Our Project
Maria Cristina Falls as a tourist destination, plays a vital contribution on economic boost in Iligan City most importantly, around the globe. It serves as the reason of the existence of the countless productive industries erected in Iligan due to its utilization as a hydropower plant that lights almost 80% of the cities in Mindanao in the cheapest cost here in the Philippines.
We would like to promote the adherence of Maria Cristina Falls as tourist destination and above all the source of hydroelectic power. Furthermore, we would like to unveil the hidden wonders of Maria Cristina Waterfalls.
3. Our Computer and Internet Access
A. Percentage of the students using the internet at home: abut 40%
B. Number of worstations with internet access in the classroom: 2
C. Connection speed used in the classroom: 100.0 Mbps
D. Number of years our classroom has been connecteb to the internet: less than a year
E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or internet access: Internet access started last June 2005 to provide students, teachers, and school personnel to engage in research, classroom use, online collaboration, digital portfolio and communication through entertainment and news update around the country and around the world.
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
At first, we thought that it was easy but as we go through the project, we realized it was kind of hard. We had a difficult time in looking for the right person to be interviewed, regarding the history of the different beauty spots here in our place. Because we have to give time in studying our lessons rather than giving time to interviews, research and find ways in finishing our project, sometimes we felt no hope and our determination loses.
As students, we don't have extra money to spend for transportation in going to the site and yet digital camera is not readily available. However, all these odds we overcome because of the intense determination and courage to finish what we have started.
In every endeavor that we will be facing, we had to anticipate problems and obstacles and laid remedies for smooth realization of the plan.
5. Our project sound bite
In taking part of this kind of competition, it's an honor to promote Maria Cristina Falls as the most admired and famous waterfalls in the entire Mindanao because of its alluring twin cascades. The vast and voluminously flowing of water of Maria Cristina Falls is also used as a hydroelectic power plant that contributed alot to Iligan's progress. And also it is our greatest achievement in participating in this Cyberfair contest. Our goal is to promote ILIGAN CITY to the other parts of the globe.
A. We would like to extend our thousand thank yous for all those who had helped and supported us in this project.
B. We have developed our confidence and great thinking skills to make a good outcome.
C. Because of this project, we learned many lessons and discovered surprises.
6. How did your activities and research for this International Schools Cyberfair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
If not because of this Cyberfair, we will not be able to enhance our skills in operating the computer. We also developed our skills in communicating to other people from higher sector and to the little ones. It made us better citizens in our own hometown.
As a part of our project in ADVANCED CHEMISTRY class, we learned how to value nature’s solvent like our very own MARIA CRISTINA FALLS. The team realized how important to have an internet access in every computers in our school or even at home. Without this internet access, the students will bear the risks of impractical way of gathering information.
PROJECT ELEMENTS
1. What information and technologies did you need to complete your CyberFair project?
There were 4 available computers used by the students to research some information about their topic. Each student in this group project had internet access in the computers so they may be able to work on their assigned category. We used digital camera to take pictures as a design in our web page. We never forget to use old magazines, newspaper to gather some related articles and old pictures of the famous beauty spots of ILIGAN CITY. To get more information on the history of the local attraction, our group performed some oral interview to the experts of the tales and myths of the beauty spots.
2. In what ways did you act as “ambassadors” and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both online and in person?
We set a good example for younger generation to appreciate and promote the beauty of nature within our locality. Because of the information gathered from personal interviews, internet and books, we can be able to value and preserve and tell our fellow teens about the legend of the Maria Cristina Falls and how it helped Iligan’s economy.
This is our own little yet effective way to inform the people throughout the Philippines and globally about the magnificent features of the 2nd highest waterfall in the Philippines, Maria Cristina Falls.
3. What has been the impact of project on your community?
We were glad that the people we interviewed have cooperated to us and were interested in our topic. It was great pleasure the people appreciated our hard work and were happy about the fact that someone’s noticing the city’s pride. During our visit at Ilgan City Tourism, staffs were happy because we helped them promote Ilgan’s best waterfalls.
4. How did your project involve other members or your community as helpers and volunteers?
This project wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community people. They shared their knowledge and time especially in our interviews. They were willing to give their time in assisting our explorations. Our beloved parents had given their financial and moral support especially in our outdoor activities. We also thanked our school for allowing us to use the computers.
5. Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)
First of all, as we made this project, we were more fascinated and amazed in the wonders possessed by our city. It taught us on how to value, appreciate and love our own native land. Amazingly, as we pushed through this project, the undiscovered things were discovered and the mystery was unfolded.
Through this project, we have learned that cooperation is really needed in order to have the best result. Like cooperation, hard work and determination are also considered necessary. We discovered that each of us has our own God-given talent which made us think that God is so marvelous. Throughout the making of the project, we never expected that it will be successful. We also learned how to mingle with others especially in conducting an interview.
