Rangers signed Fernando Ricksen from AZ 67 Alkmaar in July 2000, beating off competition from Ajax, and other clubs from around Europe.
Fernando, who was named after the ABBA song, began his career with Roda JC as a youth player. After growing unhappy with a lack of first team chances (having been put in a team with kids older than him) Ricksen got in touch with the other club in the south of Holland, and he was quickly snapped up and signed professional terms with Fortuna Sittard.
In his first season, the youth team won the league. In his second season he floated around between the youth, reserve and first team much earlier than he had expected.
It wasn't long before his talent was spotted and in the summer of 1997, Ricksen signed for AZ 67 Alkmaar for a fee of around £750,000. He had ambitions of being a central midfielder, although the new coach at AZ had different ideas - knowing that Ricksen was one of the best attacking right-backs he had ever seen.
Although a tough tackler and successful as a defender, Ricksen loves to get forward and score goals - something he has done well for Rangers since his £3.6million arrival. Although he found life in Scotland tough at first, he has really blossomed under Alex McLeish - he was impressive during the 2002/03
season - forming a great partnership with Barry Ferguson to help the club win the Treble.
Now he is one of the club's most valuable players, because of his versatility. Although he has been called up to the Holland squad during his time with Rangers, he hasn't played for a while, and he will certainly look to force his way back into the international set-up in time for the World Cup in 2006, having missed out on Euro 2004.
In the 2004/05 season he continued the fine form that he had shown in the previous campaign, being named SPL Player of the Month for October. He made 51 appearances and got upfield to score 9 goals.
His hard work in clinching the title for Rangers was rewarded when he won the Scottish PFA Player of the Year Award. The only catch being that he had to share it with Celtic's John Hartson.
He will be integral in helping Rangers hold onto the SPL trophy in 2005/06
