As usual he was a hit with the female members of the cast (not to mention the public!), flirting with Holly and then having an affair with Lara. Soon after starting on Casualty Ian discovered he was allergic to the latex used in the rubber gloves, hence the reason he had blue (latex free) gloves whilst everyone else had normal ones.

This led to one of Emmerdale's most exciting storylines - the Dave, Kim, Frank love triangle. Kim became pregnant and despite the doubts of who fathered the baby it seemed like the lovers were finally going to set up home together but fate struck and Dave was killed saving the baby from a burning Home Farm.
