May 30 and 31 Show Review

I went to see Barry this past weekend, May 30 & 31.  What an AWESOME time!  I always look forward to seeing the shows and see what order he does songs in and what he changes each time I go.  He never disappoints! Friday night I had Right Side stage seat 7. So Friday night he started with his usual Gonzo medley and stopped the show and did Why Don't We Live Together.  The show was almost like a combination of all the shows I have seen in Vegas over the past few years.  He did They Dance along with Boogie Wonderland, that whole melody that he has done in times past.  I am really glad he did that. He did Here At The Mayflower. He also went through the decades as well.  Starting with SWBB, CCC, Moonlight Serenade, then the 50s, 60s and 70s.  I got chills when he started to play IWTS.  The way that song starts just gets me all wrapped up in the song and the lyrics.  The crowd on my side didn't seem like too many fans.  In fact, many times, I think there were only a couple people in my section standing and dancing and having a good time.  But that didn't bother me at all.  He came over to our section and motioned for everyone to get on their feet and dance, but I guess they just were not into it.  The two ladies that were sitting next to me, were not fans but they seemed to have on okay time.  They were fun and real nice ladies.  He looked at me a couple of times and even sang to me, then winked at me and went down the line.  He had all kinds of things falling out of his pockets, even a tissue at one point fell out.  He picked it up and made a comment that he hoped he wasn't coming down with something.  A couple times he stopped to blow his nose.  And he made the comment about how he was a person, too.  But he was in good spirits, moving all around the stage and seemed to be having fun.  All in all, it was a great evening and a wonderful show.

Saturday night the show was about the same but he seemed to be in a playful mood.  He was really enjoying himself, dancing a lot more and laughing a lot.  It made the show fun.  At one point he decided to do WINE and before he did that he told this hilarious story about a Ford Convention that he played for here in Nashville (of course when he said Nashville, I was the only one who let out a holler and he said, "Oh, we have a Nashville ite in the crowd" He said a lot of good things about Nashville so I was proud) Right before he was going to do this song, he said that he saw and felt drops of oil on the piano keys.  He looked up and saw a car hanging above his head.  He said he felt like he had died a couple times before but he really didn't want to right then.  He was very funny plus I had never heard that story before.  I got another handshake and a short little dance from the seat.  This time I was Left Side Stage Seat 21.

I know I am leaving a bunch out, but right now I just can't remember it all.  I guess I am still in that la-la land where I have not completely come back down to reality yet.

I didn't take many pictures this time, just enjoyed seeing Barry and watching him.  He looked great and you could tell that he was feeling good.

At least one more time for me this year, to Vegas.  Half the fun of seeing the shows is meeting new friends and catching up with friends I have not seen in a while.  Can't wait 'till October!!

May 7, 2008 Show Review and Pics

My first Barry show was May 2007 and all I could think about was when I'd get to see him again! I must admit that I was so nervous and excited the first time that I really didn't relax and enjoy the show as much as I could, but this time I sure did!

The show on May 7th started 15 minutes late (ok, so I was getting a bit anxious), but I sat next to a lovely lady that was there for the UK Bash, which helped pass the time. She said they had gone to Cher the night before and Barry was there...cool!

The show had some similarities from last year, and of course, with the new 70s album, some additions. One of the highlights was his trying out 'Born Free' on an audience for the first time. He had been working on the song as a tribute to Andy Williams for the Ella Awards, and wanted to know what we thought of it. He and the backup singers needed lyric sheets to get through it but WOW...it was absolutely fantastic! The audience jumped to their feet and applauded their approval at the end!

I think the highlight for me personally, was the "Grandpa" story, which he hadn't done the year before. I'd heard it so many times, that I could recite it word for word along with him, but the most emotional part for me, was rising to my feet at the end of it, applauding with tears in my eyes, to show my own personal appreciation to him, and his Grandpa for starting this wonderful career...whatta life indeed!

Another highlight was the "They Dance" portion.  Barry had encouraged everyone to get up and boogey along with him, and then, oh my, I'd heard the rumours but didn't dare to believe them, but there it was...the BAMMS....have mercy!  I think I may have screamed a little...

Something that made me giggle, was when he needed a drink of water and talked about how brutal the Vegas dry air was on singers, and that his hotel room had to be specially humidified.  "No kidding...you should see my hotel room...", he said, which of course got the crowd whooping out loud.  "Well, I didn't mean that literally" he laughed..it was cute!

So, it was truly your typical Barry show...full of beautiful music, laughter, tears and pure magic.  I hope to get the chance to see him again some day, but if I don't I can look back and be thankful that I was lucky enough to see him twice and will cherish the memories.

Valentine's Day Show

Debbie Giese has just returned from spending some time at "Barry's House" and she graciously provided us with the pictures in the slide show above! Here's her review of the show. Thanks Debbie!

Barry came out of the fog with a black jacket with a simple orange trim. Like always, a chill went down my spine. It's a Miracle, Daybreak, Somewhere in the Night and This One's For You was unbelievable. My husband and I were in the front row and those songs just set the tone for this Valentines evening.

It was time for the 40's Segment. He started with Singin' with the Big Bands. The background was gray/white/silver diagonal lines in a criss-cross pattern. Then he changed into the white jacket and motioned to the crowd for approval. Of course we responded with our approval. The white jacket was so appropriate for this segment. He moved into Bandstand Boogie, Jump Shout Boogie and Chattanooga Choo Choo. I felt like Moonlight Serenade was exceptionally good tonight. Maybe it was the Valentines atmosphere. He danced with a lady named Ellen and they looked so good dancing together. Flawless.

Then came the 50's segment. Barry performed Love is a Many Splendored Thing (he did not perform Venus as in Tuesdays show). As always, he added some humor after the song. The audience really seemed to like it.  Are You Lonesome Tonight was spectacular. Throughout the week I feel I am getting more and more emotional with that song. By Saturday, there will be a puddle around my seat. For some reason, that song is really hitting me. Sitting on the front row, you really see and hear his emotions in that song. That song was beautiful.

On to the 60's. The girls were wearing new light blue costumes. Very nice. Perfect for this time period. The silver Nehru jacket was nice. In November it was the multi-colored jacket (orange, pink, etc). Silver was much better looking. After the bit with the funny cigarette he sang Yesterday. When he did I Made It Through the Rain, he was wearing a blue velvet jacket. He did the Grandpa Joe story. My husband really likes that part and was happy that was in the show tonight because when we saw him in November 2006, he did not do that story. He just showed so much emotion telling the story. The finale of the song was awesome. They put up a photo of Grandpa and Barry on the back screen behind the band. After hearing the story, I'm sure everyone appreciates him more than anything. After he sang Can't Take My Eyes Off You, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling and What the World Needs Now is Love, you just had a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Everyone on stage looked so happy and content and was having so much fun. The feeling just radiated throughout the crowd.

Tryin' to Get the Feeling was changed some. Being so close to him and the piano during this song was astounding. As always, his heart was in the song and you could see his was giving 110%. His voice and piano playing was powerful, passionate and moving. Standing ovation was definitely well deserved. Who can forget Mandy and I Write the Songs. When you start hearing I Write the Songs, you know the concert is almost over and feel sad. But then he brings you right back and performs Copacabana. It's fun to look in people eyes that have never seen the show when they do Copa, they cannot help dancing and singing along. That theatre is so alive. We even got some Bams.

A portion of It's a Miracle ended the show. There were so many happy people during the show. Everyone got a real treat (as always). It seems when the show is absolutely perfect; Barry does something to make it better. There is always surprises and humor in every show. I might have missed something so please forgive me. After going to 5 shows last week, they all kinda ran into one another. I am still on cloud nine and it's going to take some time to come back to reality.

February Shows Review

Donna Ruberti attended several shows in February and graciously agreed to let us post her reviews from the Barrynet. It is compilation of three nights of reviews. Thanks Donna!

Barry looked HOT as usual, in his new purple jacket. His voice was as always top notch. He didn't perform Venus but he did Love is a Many Splendored Thing. He sang Are You Lonesome Tonight and it was beautiful. He also brought back the Grandpa Joe and "sing it" segment.

He commented on how lively the crowd was. He danced with a lucky lady tonight--I don't think she was part of our fan club group but she looked thrilled. I took very few pictures tonight- I just kept my eyes on him the whole show! I was also-- as I predicted--- jumping up and down the entire time screaming . He did look up our way and acknowledge us so that made my night! I loved the 60's segment.

The show was outstanding! The crowd was crazy and Barry decided because of the wild crowd to sing Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed!!!! They absolutely loved it. Barry was wearing a black jacket with orange around the collar flap.
He sang Copa with his magnificent BAMS!!! And after the show Barry showed up at Tempo Lounge for about an hour.

TONIGHT the crowd was wild and Barry as usual was hotter than ever! The audience was on it's feet before he even came out.He sang the same songs as Friday but the crowd went CRAZY!! and so did I!! I was literally leaping into the air the entire time. He just brings out the ENERGY in me along with everyone else in the audience!!

He looked wonderful!! His voice sounded great and he seemed so overwhelmed with the crowd. He even acknowledged us "repeaters".  As usual I cried during Mooonlight Serenade reliving my time with him. But even though I joke around, we DO have to share him and I'm glad those ladies had THEIR dreams come true!!

Photos from March

Thanks to Gloria Marshall for sending us these photos from her trip to Vegas last week.

Show Reviews for March

Debbie Giese just got back from a trip to Vegas to "surprise" Sandy Devine on her birthday. Here's her review of the events and the shows, along with some pictures she shared with us. Thanks Debbie!

Surprising my friend Sandy was a moment to remember. She was in line to check in at the Hilton and I walked up behind her and said “Has anyone seen Barry Manilow lately?” she turned around and screamed. I thought security was going to come running. We had a meet and greet with Barry on Friday night after the show. Of course we were in heaven. After the meet and greet we hung out in Tempo. Barry came in and we just stared like two little girls. Saturday evening Sandy and I went to the show (this was Sandy’s only show that week). She had stage left seats (front row). Barry came over during Copa and no one else on that row stood up and so Barry shook her hand and danced to Copa with her for about 10 seconds or so. All 3 shows were fantastic. Barry was in such a good mood. On Thursday he did Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again (my fav), on Friday he did Memory and on Saturday he did Who’s Been Sleeping in my Bed. I love Mandy and usually do not get mushy, but for some reason this week, that song really hit me. It was such a quick weekend. When I was on the way to the airport, I looked back at the mural on the Hilton and just smiled. When the plane took off, I could see the Hilton and the mural so clearly. I whispered to myself…see you in two months Barry.

April Show Review

Thanks to Debbie Giese for giving us this great review for the Wednesday, April 18th show!

Keep in mind there were over 100 fans from the UK at the Hilton this week. Just had a feeling something was different about this week.

When the show opened, Barry was standing and singing “I’m Coming Back” in the smoke filled doorway. He walked to the front of the stage and the spotlight came on him when he got to the front. Then he moved right into "It's a Miracle". Next came "Daybreak/Somewhere in the Night/This One's for You". The rest of the show on Tuesday and Thursday were similar to the shows I saw in February and March.

Wednesday’s show was the best show I have ever seen. The roof was blown off. The show started the same as Tuesday and Thursday; however, I knew something was up because there were two sets of stairs on the main floor on each side of the stage. After the opening, he mentioned that he missed doing “Can’t Smile Without You”. I had never seen him perform that live. He picked a lady from the UK (Leslie). She was great. Looked like she was having a ball up there. I know he usually sits on the piano and the lady stands between his legs, but the screen was down and no piano. So he just stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her. He gave her a signed video capturing this special time. Then he took off the white jack and grabbed the microphone stand. I knew he was going to do “Whose Been Sleeping in My Bed". He did that song in February, but with the leather pants…all I can say is “WOW”.  Then he moved into "Sweet Heaven (I'm in Love Again)." Did not even give the audience a chance breath or sit down. I was wondering if he was going to add the little strip tease during the song, but didn’t. Another change was the set from the Mayflower where he does “They Dance”. Kye and Keely dance so beautifully together. The ending to the show was the standard “Mandy”, “I Write the Songs” and  “Copa”. I did not want the concert to end. My husband said I had the biggest smile on my face. I felt like I had seen the concert for the first time. Even he commented that this was the best show he had ever seen.

Friday was a disappointing with the show being cancelled. During the day, we were all talking and trying to anticipate what he was going to do. We had a feeling he would bring back the leather on Friday or Saturday. I have to remember that I am blessed with the number of shows I have seen and cherish every moment I can see Barry perform.

Check out Debbie's great pics below. We are so lucky to have someone who is willing to share her pictures with all of us. Thanks Debbie!
