Horatio joined the police academy straight out of High School. He soon realised that the CSIs, the teams that dealt with the hard evidence were the people that really solved the crimes, and enrolled himself in University. Four years later he joined Miami's finest as a CSI. He quickly became irritated with departmental burreaucracy, and threatened to quit, but someone had seen the potential of this fiesty young CSI. Al Humphries offered to train Caine as a bomb tech, Humphries not only became Horatio's boss but also one of his closest friends as well as the father figure that Caine had never had.
When Megan Donner stepped down as head of the Crime Lab, Horatio was asked to take her place, and he accepted.
Horatio thought for many years that his brother Raymond, and undercover narcotics officer, had been killed in the line of duty. Until events unfolded that made him suspect that maybe what he believed wasn't quite so straightforward. A routine fingerprint search on AFIS confirmed that Raymond was alive and working deep undercover.
A force to be reckoned with, Horatio is fiercly protective of his team and the victims that he meets. He doesn't just trust the science, but also puts his faith in his gut instinct. He understands that the job can mean nothing without passion and dedication.
