Grand Master Hwang

>> About Grand Master Hwang

Grand Master Hwang began his martial arts training at the age of 11 in his native Korea. After graduating with a degree in Political Science from Kyung Bok National University in Tae Gu, he joined the Republic of Korean Army, serving in the Vietnam War. Grand Master Hwang was a martial arts instructor for the famed Tiger Division of the Korean Army as well as the United States Marine Corps and Vietnamese Army. Grand Master Hwang graduated from the first International Taekwon-Do Federation's Instructor Training Course and was certified by the ITF as an official umpire. He retired as Captain from the Korean Army in 1971 and he was invited to the United States to teach Taekwon-Do in Manchester, Connecticut.


Grand Master Hwang currently oversees 15 Hwang's Schools of Taekwon-Do in the Northeast with thousands of students. He also gives seminars, provides promotional testings and provides technical support to Taekwon-Do schools all over the United States.

Grand Master Hwang has served as Director of the USA Junior Taekwon-Do team for every Junior World Championship since 1990 and also for the 1989 and 1992 USA Senior Taekwon-Do Teams.

Grand Master Hwang was promoted to the rank of 9th degree Taekwon-Do Grand Master in 1997 by the founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi. His certificate number K-9-1 represents the first Korean 9th degree Taekwon-Do Grand Master.

Grand Master Hwang served as a special assistant to General Choi was the official spokesman for the ITF and served as Chairman of the ITF Promotional and ITF merger Committees. He is now the acting Secretary General of the ITF.
