Site Overhaul

As part of a promotional material update in line with the relaunched On Station newsletter our website will shortly be undergoing a major overhaul. Please bare with us if you notice any odd bits and pieces, we're sure you'll enjoy the final outcome.

Intro

A warm welcome to all visitors to the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Brigade website. We are sometimes referred to as the Hamilton Fire District Volunteer Unit as we are the volunteer component within the Hamilton Fire District of the New Zealand Fire Service, which is primarily served by full-time career firefighters. Our station is located behind the career staff station in the suburb of Chartwell and has the station number 42. It is a one-appliance station and our appliance callsign is Chartwell 4226, however we will be upgrading to two appliances very soon! Our brigade ceased carrying out traditional firefighting roles in early 2006 and has since re-tasked to carry out specialist roles at incidents referred to as "operational support", as well as generally providing extra hands where needed. Our members are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist the career frontline firefighters of the Hamilton Fire District, other volunteer fire brigades throughout the entire Waikato Fire Area as well as other emergency services. We aim for, and achieve, an average response time of 8 to 10 minutes from the time of pagers being activated until the time our appliance leaves the station with a minimum crew of four.

With an establishment of 15 members we function like any traditional fire brigade - running our own appliance, responding from our own fire station and being on call 24/7 through personal pagers. We do not respond directly in our private vehicles and you can easily tell us apart at an emergency because we wear blue helmets while the career firefighters wear yellow. We are not Fire Police though, who in other Fire Districts also wear blue helmets and we do not perform traffic management or refreshments - roles often associated with these units. You can learn more about our history and how we have succesfully transitioned from traditional firefighting to operational support, on the History page of this website. The HVFB are turned out anytime our appliance is requested at an incident, automatically if a 2nd Alarm is transmitted within the Hamilton turnout zone or automatically when a 3rd Alarm is transmitted anywhere else within the Waikato Fire Area. During 2010 our major goal and associated activity is commissioning our 2nd appliance which will form the basis of our Emergency Lighting Plant.

What's Hot

» February 13: The Summer 2012 On Station newsletter is now online in PDF format, please click to view (1Mb).

» January 2, 2011: Happy New Year all! Nice for a change to not be called out on New Years night! Regrettably we must still advise everyone that we are NOT currently recruiting. We're continuouly receiving enquiries but simply don't have any spaces available, sorry. The brigade is capped at 15 members and currently has over 70 expressions of interest in joining but spaces only tend to open up once a year or two, as and when a member moves on. When this does occur, the next person on the waiting list will be contacted. If you have a real burning desire to join up please consider the possibility of living or working in one of the outlying towns around Hamilton whose volunteer brigades are in very urgent need of new members - particularly Ngaruawahia, Whitikahu and Pirongia.

» December 5, 2011: A tonne of fun had over the hill at TECT Park in the Bay of Plenty yesterday for the 10 HVFB members who completed their Rural Firefighting (3285/3286/3287) course. Despite persistent rain, instructors Jarron and Peter ensured a fantastic course experience - keep an eye out for photo's and report in the next newsletter.

» November 21, 2011: Congratulations to all recipients of awards presented at Honours Night on Saturday the 19th! Click through to read more and see photo's.

» November 7, 2011: Thanks to Green Watch at Northern FireCom for hosting a small group from our mob yesterday afternoon. Nigel, Daryl, Steph and George stopped in to see the very interesting inner workings of the communications centre in Auckland and put some faces to the voices we often hear over the radio.

» August 13, 2011: The Winter 2011 On Station newsletter is now online in PDF format, please click to view (1Mb).

» August 1, 2011: A lengthy callout last night assisting at a K99 house fire in Te Kowhai to the city's North-East. A sleepout and garage were fully engulfed, with fire spreading through the ceiling of the adjoining house. Hamilton VFB provided scene lighting and traffic control - reducing traffic to one lane on Te Kowhai Road. With the main fire knocked down, members subsequently assisted with overhaul to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Some of our personnel feature in the last photo of a story at the Waikato Times website.

» July 11, 2011: Saturday's Waikato Times newspaper featured a brilliant full page article on the Hamilton Vollies - the text of which is available on the WT website. We've also done our best to put together a composite scan which you can download in pdf here (2.2Mb) to see the photo's that went with it. Thanks to Tracey Cooper who wrote the article and Bruce Mercer for the photo's, great work!
