It is with great regret that we report the death on the 17th January 2009 of Peter Garth, Secretary for 10 Years of the Huntingdonshire Philatelic Society and a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of London. He had a major stroke two weeks earlier, never recovered and died in post.
Peter Garth had a distinguished career in the Royal air Force from which he retired in 1989. Thereafter he devoted himself to working for others. He was for many years President of the Huntingdon Branch of the RAFA; of which he was a founder member, Secretary for many years and then President of a local Probus, and he was the very active Secretary of the Air Historical Trust. In this role he was much in demand throughout the country as a lecturer on airships and their history.
Peter was a man of many intellectual interests who came to philately only after he left the Royal air force. However he was an avid collector and his enthusiasm for and his vigorous and untiring interest and support of the hobby and his Society were an example for all to follow.
He was buried at Brampton on the c31st January where a very large congregation was testimony to how much his life had enriched others and how much he will be missed.
