Can a photograph truly capture the moment? Should it? Photography is an interesting contrast of truth and fiction. The subjects edit their appearance, whereby they control the impact of the photograph on others. I wanted to make true portraits. To this end, I asked a variety of people, both acquaintances and strangers, to let me take their portrait. When the models agreed I asked them to remove their pants and photographed them in their underwear. My idea was to penetrate the shell or the image, and approach the model’s true self. They had to show a side of them selves that they had not planned on revealing. The result was fun and funny and in my opinion “true” portraits, each of which demonstrates an amazingly distinct character.
This piece was exhibited in gallery Nema hvad, January 2003.
