He was born in 1960 in Nigeria, and he and his family left when he was about one. They moved throughout England, Australia, back in England, South Africa, back in England (1973-76: School of Queen Elizabeth's Hospital, Bristol) again and, when he was 16, he moved to Sydney, Australia where he stayed put. And finished his education at Knox Grammar school, Sydney. He graduated from NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) in 1981.

Hugo won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in Proof (1991). He later on received an AFI Award nomination for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, The (1994). He won his second AFI Award for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in Interview, The (1998), he also won best acting prize at the Montreal Film Festival from the same work. In 1998, Hugo Weaving won Australian star of the year.
